Sort of? I ended up waitlisted at Wilfrid Laurier because of their limited funding for graduate students, and Portland State deferred my acceptance to 2021 because of COVID-19. I'm not sure what will happen still, which feels about par for the course for the general uncertainty in the air these days.

Woah, the school deferred? I didn't know that could happen. How did that go down? (also Stephanie Wahab and Susanne Klawetter are both fantastic)

Also, sorry that all the uncertainty is impacting you this way.

Has anyone heard from UNC? I saw someone was just waitlisted - does anyone else have updates or have you checked in with the office? I'm on the verge of accepting another offer but did hope to hear from them first. Can't decide if I should email or sit on it a little longer.

I emailed them 2.5 weeks ago and they said they were aiming to have decisions out by the end of last week-- but that was before everywhere was affected by COVID-19. I was the waitlisted person. You could email Dr. Chapman.

If you don't mind me asking, what were your doubts and what did your professor say to change your mind, if you can recall it with any specificity? I don't really have anyone I can talk to about this besides my friends and my partner. My one professor that I really like and trust sits on the committee for a fellowship that I am applying to, so I can't really let her know how unsure I feel about everything. I haven't even told my friends in the program how I'm feeling because I'm too ashamed. If I don't get the fellowship, though (which at this point seems likely), maybe I'll see if she has time to meet with me.

Your point about there being many other avenues in this field that I could pursue besides therapy is a good one. I guess I am scared that if I go the macro route I will be less employable because I feel there is nothing inherently special about me that would make me stand out to an employer, whereas it seems that more traditional social work jobs are usually pretty high in demand. I also hear your point about how having finished a degree looks better than dropping out halfway through in our elitist society. At this point I am really just doing a cost-benefit analysis as to whether having those three letters after my name is worth an additional 20,000 to 35,000 in debt, especially if I don't plan on following a career path where it would be required (for instance, if I was planning on getting my LCSW). It's a lot to consider but as I said before I really appreciate you taking the time out of your day to leave such a thoughtful and helpful response to a somewhat incoherent post made in the throes of desperation. Thank you.

I'm going to reply through message.

I hope that y'all are getting the good news you're hoping for! The waiting is stressing me out, but I've received the following application updates so far:

    • USC (MSW/PhD) - Invited to campus visit day as finalist for PhD, accepted to MSW
    • Ohio State (MSW/PhD) - Accepted
    • UCLA (PhD) - On waitlist after Zoom interview
    • UT Austin  (PhD) - On waitlist, no interview
    • Columbia (PhD) - Rejected

I just officially declined my spot of Austin, hopefully you're high on the wait list!

Go where the school has money or go to the school that is giving you the most money? Trying to decide between Case Western and WashU since I haven't heard from the other schools yet.

The school that's giving you the most money. I'll be at WashU as a PhD student next year, and one of the biggest reasons is because they're giving me a truck load of money. For the MSW, the name of the school doesn't matter nearly as much. Top 20 is top 20, and even that doesn't matter for most jobs.

  6. First, I would say get a new therapist if you are able. Don't stop looking until you find a good fit.

Second, the debt is going to be there whether you stop going or not. If you finish, the three letters after your name will help you get a job (it's elitist and capitalist but what can you do?). Is there a Dean of Academic Affairs you could talk to? Or a trusted professor? When I was having doubts about my MSW, I talked to the only professor I had liked at that point and she completely changed everything for me.

No one can make the decision but you, and no one here will have to live with the consequences of this choice either way. I'd encourage you to look into the diversity of the field before you decide though. Have you thought about macro? Policy? Research? Evaluation? Private sector? Medical social work (both case work and not)? Public health social work? School social work? There are so many options for people who don't want to be therapists, I have no idea why therapy is presented as the main option.

Good luck! (Oh and if anyone is making you feel shitty for having debt and being unsure of your life path, dump them from your life. This is normal and not something to be shamed about)

Thanks and likewise! Are you in the Denver/Colorado area? I just moved to Denver after spending the last 8 years mostly overseas with a UN agency. Turns out having a career abroad is not compatible with being married and having a spouse who had to remain in the US.

I paid a visit to DU’s school and had an extremely positive meeting with one of their student ambassadors. It seems like the social work school has a lot of great resources—they even have a classroom set up with one-way windows so you can practice your interpersonal and clinical skills while the rest of the class watches. I’ve never seen a classroom like that before!

I go to DU and have never seen or heard about a class using that room. The classroom it's in is the absolute worst pain in the butt classroom. DU is a great program if you make it what you want, and I am so grateful for all the opportunities it gave me, but that room isn't one of them. ? Just felt I had the responsibility to be honest about that room.

    Best of luck to everyone!

Hey everyone! I just found this thread and figured I’d introduce myself— I also started a PhD social work thread a few months back, if any of you are interested in checking it out!

This is my first time applying to doctoral programs and I applied to three schools: Michigan State University (MSU), the University of Denver (DU), and the University of Michigan (UM) joint program in Social Work and Sociology. As of right now, I have been accepted at MSU and received an interview invitation at DU. My interview is next week (2/7) and I’m very nervous/excited! I haven’t heard from UM yet— I believe those decisions are usually released in mid-February.

I have an MSW from UM and almost 2 years of post-MSW experience. I currently work in research at Johns Hopkins and have spent much of my career doing political activism around LGBTQ+ rights. In a PhD program, I want to specifically focus my research on transgender and nonbinary health equity with a special emphasis on rural communities. I’m interested in working with trans people of all ages as well as those with multiple intersecting marginalized identities.

Additional stats: I have one publication that actually just got accepted 2 weeks ago (not first author), my GRE scores are 150 verbal, 140 quant, and 5 in writing, and my grad GPA was a 3.8. My stats are not the strongest, but I’ve really focused on my personal statement, research experience, and tried to find a strong faculty fit at each school I’ve applied to.

I’m excited to have found this thread and hope we all receive some good news in the near future!

Oh, hey, fancy seeing you here :)

For those of you that have been accepted, did that school do an admitted students day? Wisconsin is paying for me to go out there for theirs. I was just curious if this was typical.

WUSTL pays for accepted/interviewees to attend interview day. I think this is pretty standard at the bigger schools.

  10. Hi all! I just found the Social Work forum! I'm still waiting to hear from UNC-CH, UPenn, and a fellowship at WUSTL. I am now obsessively checking the results page because anxiety. Good luck to everyone!

I've been accepted to WUSTL and UT-A and have an interview with UMich ANTH on Monday.

My stats: MSW/MPH 2020, 8 pubs, lots of varied research experience, 3.5/3.9/3.8 GPA for UG/MSW/MPH, GRE 310. I was (am?) a birth doula for 10 years and have a couple of years social services experience.

Working to reduce birth trauma/health disparities through doula use.

Nice! My first choice listed was Eugene Walls. I also mentioned Donny, Jen, and Kim! All four of these faculty seem super invested in LGBTQ+ health. I’m really drawn to Jen due to her political background— I’ve done a lot of activism and many universities condemn it. She really sold me on DU due to how the school has supported her in her political work.

Eugene is fantastic! As are Donny, Kim, and Jen. It's a great place for feeling supported, and community work/activism is encouraged.

You sound like a fantastic candidate! Congrats on your early admission offer with WUSTL! Is there a school that you’d say is your number one choice?

They're all pretty much tied. I had great connections at all, so I'm waiting on offers and then the Dean of my current school will help me compare offers.

Good to know! I’m very nervous. I’ve been checking my email and the DU portal way too much. Did you apply before the December 1st deadline or the January 15th deadline? Also, who are you hoping to work with there?

    Dec. 1st.

At DU, I'd work with Jen Greenfield (and Kim Bender). Did you apply to work with Donny?

When I spoke with someone from MSU, they said they'd be making decisions on or around January 22nd. She said I'd likely hear back at the end of January. MSU would be a great program to work with faculty researching older adults! Are there specific faculty members you're interested in working with? Also, I currently live in Maryland and work at Johns Hopkins. If you'd like to know more about Maryland or UMBC, feel free to ask!

My top school is the University of Denver (DU). I ended up applying to DU, MSU, and U-Michigan. Since I applied by the early deadline at Denver, they said I'll likely hear back this month. I'm very nervous considering how competitive the program is. I really like DU because they seem to use an anti-oppressive lens, and recent graduates of the program spoke very highly of their experience. I'm hoping to focus my research on transgender and nonbinary health, and DU has a few faculty who are really dedicated to this area of research.

I've heard that DU is meeting next week. I love DU, it's a great school with fantastic scholars and support.

  15. Hi all,

I applied to 5 programs. UNC, UPenn, UT-Austin, DU, and WUSTL. I received an early admission offer from WUSTL, so I'm really excited! Just waiting to hear from the other 4.

I've been obsessively checking here,  so now I'm finally making an account.

I have 8 pubs (with two+ in process), am graduating with MSW/MPH, have a decade experience as a doula (as well as some social service experience), 160/150/4 for GRE (I think), and a lot of research experience. 3.5/3.9/3.8 GPA for UG/MSW/MPH.

I'm interested in reducing birth-related health disparities and trauma.

    Good luck to everyone!
