Going to: University of British ColumbiaLESSONS LEARNED:
1. Fit!!!!!
2. Find something to distract you during the waiting stage. It is long and you might not hear back until the very end. Don't check your email (or grad cafe) a million times a day.
3. Put a lot of work into your SOP. It matters more than GRE scores/past grades. Also, tailor each SOP to the school you are applying to.

Declining offers is difficult...
-
Anyone know the placement record of UBC?
-
Anybody have advice on where to look for rankings? I know that people seem to like the NRC rankings but, unless I am wrong, they haven't been updated since 2010.
-
Anybody know when it is usual for schools to start making their decisions about waitlists? I'm on a few waitlists lol

Just declined a good chunk of offers, so hopefully this helps someone on the WL!
Where did you decline?

Just wondering for those of you who have said that they are waitlisted for funding at Ohio state, how do you know? I haven't heard anything from Ohio State about funding but I am really hoping to be fully funded. OSU is one of my top choices.

I am not sure how does it work with waitlisted applicants, but if you are ever invited for an interview, it is almost certain that you were admitted to the program already.
Okay. Thank you! It is nice of you to come back to grad cafe to share your wisdom.

Isn't academic purgatory fun? Also, what field of study are you?

Yeah, this is driving me crazy (as you can probably tell by my constant posts here). ?
Another wave of Northwestern rejections! Why do the do it in clusters like this??? (I wasn't one of these, does this mean that I should be optimistic? No clue.)

I’m currently a PhD candidate at UCI and I can confirm that everyone that I know in my cohort had interviews before receiving their admission letters. The interviews were not like really official interviews, but they were some sort of a check-in before the school sent admission letters.
I am waitlisted but I have not been contacted for an interview. I guess if they want to accept me off the waitlist then they might contact me for an interview first?

I’ll echo what was posted above that it varies from school to school and from year to year. For example last year Duke received a higher then average Yield so I’m assuming they did not utilize their waitlist.
The general advice that I have however is to show your interest and inform them of any other offers. Let them know that if offered a spot you’d take it. AdComms are more likely to pick you if they know you’re a sure thing.
In terms of Northwestern specifically, I really have no advice. They are Hot Stuff and they know it so they can afford to not respond to questions and keep everyone in the dark.
Northwestern is weird because I keep hearing that they keep everyone in the dark, but it also seems like they have already released a ton of rejections. I guess they inform some people very quickly, but then make some people wait for a long time. (I am one of the ones waiting...)

Congrats! Wonder why I haven't heard anything yet though.

Nope -- I honestly haven't received much communication from them at all compared to the other schools. Granted, they were the first ones I heard back from.
Same here! I think we should hear about funding in the next week or so then... they said mid-february.

Is Uchicago going to send out their responses soon? Their website says that we'll hear in the first two weeks of March.
Q: When will I be notified of the decision about my application?
The Office of the Dean of Students emails all official admission decisions in the first two weeks in March. In some cases, the department may informally notify applicants of decisions earlier. Admitted PhD students are invited to campus for Political Science Day in the spring. In 2020, Political Science Day will be held on April 2.

Thanks so much! I will definitely look into that. Applying for on campus housing first!
