  1. It might be best to email kailey directly. Seeing as other people have done their pre reqs at athabasca though (i remember this coming up in prior year npsia threads), their micro and macro courses are probably fully equivalent. No harm in double checking though Also Do you think youd do both courses at the same time as well? Looks like the earliest we can begin their online course is june.. I think its also the least expensive option for completing the credits tbh which is nice ?
  2. Have you done it through athabasca or know anyone who has? Its actually where i was thinking of doing it since the registration process seems simpler plus its self paced. Ive already done micro and macro but on a pass/fail basis at u of t (it was over 4 years ago but i remebered not finding it difficult). so i was also thinking of just doing both at the sane time at athabasca.
  3. Hey guys. I need to complete an econ class to meet my offer for NSPIA. I almost completely forgot until getting a reminder email from Kailey to be honest (since this whole pandemic has started ive found it hard to even think about grad school and whether classes will be running normally in a few months time... ) Anyways, I've been debating where to do the econ course but i think i might try to sign up for carletons online course or somewhere else depending on the availability at this point. Just concerned about timelines since i thought youre blocked from registering for courses until your offer changes to unconditional. Does anyone know when course registration starts this year for the fall term?
  4. Thanks so much and that's good to know. I think I will accept the offer from Carleton, wait to hear from the other school, and then make up my mind prior to paying a deposit since I should be hearing back from the other university within 2 weeks. Would be great to not incur any penalties since school is gonna expensive regardless of where I go haha Carleton honestly has a great graduate school with a wonderful co op program so I'm torn - I was actually gonna visit Ottawa to try to help make a decision the past weekend before the current situation we're in happened... Congrats though! I'm guessing you mustve already accepted your offer then. Did you get a follow up email which indicated the deadline to pay the deposit was extended? It's nice they're being so considerate with the state of the world right now
  5. Anyone know whether there are any implications to accepting your offer at Carleton and not actually taking it up? I'm fortunate to have received an offer and my deadline to reply is Thursday. However, I'm still waiting to hear back from another school which is better for my particular program, and so I might end up changing my mind about where I'd go based on if they gave me an offer. My offer at Carleton is also only conditional upon me taking another econ course. I don't think there's any deposit to be worried about either, but I was wondering if there was some other penalty...
  6. Side note. Now that I've got into the program I'm looking at the program requirements even more in depth. I'm aware we have to complete 5 credits in addition to a language requirement. So do students typically finish the program in four terms (across the two years) ? And if you do co op for a term are you paying reduced fees? I assumed most people did terms each year, and worked in the summer, with the ability to take an additional term if needed if you wanted to do co op or an internship during the year
  7. Thanks! I didn't want to accept the offer, particularly if there were financial costs for doing so as I'm still thinking it through... Bit surprised there's no deposit though.
  8. Do you have to pay a deposit when accepting your offer? I'm still weighing up my options at the moment but my deadline to reply is next Thursday, so not a whole lot of time left...
  9. I think this is a completely valid concern and what's been on my mind. The virus issue is gonna be around for a while so I frankly wonder what will even happen for next term and if there will be travel restrictions. I guess it's just too early to say. I hope it all passes soon and life goes back to normal.
  10. Oh really as in this past September? Yeah I wonder if it's heavily subscribed. I personally thought it had the most interesting classes and I really hope I can swap into it.
  11. OK that's makes me feel better! Thank you so much I was pretty gutted at first I personally don't find most of the classes in my selected specialization interesting at all and would prefer taking classes in literally any other stream (don't mean to sound ungrateful but I was worried we were heavily restricted in course options). I still wonder if we can switch because otherwise might just select to do the general MA Also got funding today... 1k in scholarship and 5k each year as a ta. was expecting more of a straight scholarship but still grateful.
  12. My app still says in review by the department but my specialization has updated to conflict analysis and resolution. Personally kinda bummed out about that because foreign policy was my first choice, dont even think I put conflict in my top five. Wonder how typically people choose to not do the specialization at all and if it's impossibly difficult to get into classes marked with the field designation
  13. the mga is a professional degree, so they provide very little funding to offer holders and the program also doesn't qualify for the school's finacial aid (utaps). you might want to look at external funding sources and your province's loan system/private loans from places like scotiabank, etc.
  14. Munk typically allows for deferrals. I don't believe npsia does generally but I hope if someone had a good reason they'd consider it.
  15. congrats on everyone who got into munk u of t is an incredible place!!
  16. As a former u of t student I'd agree that the status invited definitely is a good sign (as in you'd be able to eventually register in classes, that's how acorn works). I'm sure you got it and are just waiting to hear back now officially ?
  17. think you nailed it. your degree might open doors, but work/other attributes are equally important i also personally feel like there's less an emphasis on brand name schools in the public sector than private sector.
  18. i'm personally finding carleton 360 super glitchy. i've gone back to recommended for assessment. i'm more patient this time since i know i've been accepted unofficially, but i really am curious to see the funding amount lol (im hoping they're generous but it could be a pretty small amount) APPLICATION PDF"
  19. i used to live in the uk for a bit so i know how pricey london can be i've been out of school and have saved for grad school, but it would be tough spending so much more at lse than npsia (as well, npsia is really well connected to the federal government and that's where i wanna be nayways. on the other hand, lse is one of the best schools internationally and london is an amazing city. i also like that you can do a regional specialization at lse - but im still waiting to hear back) and ah well those are all really good choices! like i said to someone else earlier, i think it depends on what you want from your program. if you're leaning more towards private sector work, i think munk is definitely the best fit. u of t/toronto is a great place to be, and you really cant go wrong with any of your choices
  20. It's between npsia and lse for me. I'm also deciding on whether to leave my job - but the goal is to work for global affairs in Ottawa and npsia is amazing for that!! How about you
  21. Yep it said funding info will come along with the official offer. Really curious because it could literally be any amount - I've read in previous forums some people get a few thousand while others essentially get over 10k.
  22. So far only got an unofficial acceptance with funding but it was my first choice of specialization and I'm hoping if I was able to get in I'd also make it for that. Currently nothing showing up for specialization though
  23. Got an unofficial offer with a funding package! Don't know how much money though
  24. I think it really depends what you want out of the program. The MGA is incredibly expensive with very limited financial support, however u of t is the best school in the country by far and there is a lot of name recognition. the professors at u of t are leading experts and i think the program also provides more flexibility in terms of whether you want to work in the private or public sector (I know several MGAs working in Ottawa as well as many others at deloitte, consulting agencies and so forth). Having also attend u of t, I found there are a lot of academic enrichment opportunities too (fully funded research trips, conferences with prominent scholars, etc). I think for public sector orientated people, npsia still slightly ends ahead of gpsia (although gpsia seems to have a fantastic internship/Co op program). And it's also obviously better than u of t in this respect too I guess the one down side of npsia/gpsia though is also it's strength - it's more suited for people who want to work in the government. Happy to answer any more questions ? if money wasn't an issue for me I think the MGA wouldve been very appealing
