  1. Nothing from UCSD yet on my end.
  2. Also got a Yale rejection today. Congrats to those who got interviews!
  3. This question is so intimidating. I was asked it in an interview and talked about a combination of things, but mainly the relevance of the conceptual side of my work to what's going on in the world right now, the interdisciplinary nature of my work, and influences of all kinds of different artists/movements that come together through a contemporary lens in my making of things. Fun nonanswer = I would like to dive deeper and find out the answer to that in grad school by being among a community of my peers looking for those answers too, and by default being in more thorough conversation with the contemporary art world. Not sure if that's good advice, but I said both since it was a long interview, and it seemed to go well for me. Would love to hear more takes on this, though!
  4. The forum's moving so fast, I almost lost this one! (I'm living for it, though. Even if my email is silent, at least there's stuff to read here, haha. ) Ah okay! Well it does say "painting and drawing" anyway in the program title! I applied with a mix of painting, drawing, sculpture, and installation. I think a lot of schools are really looking for people like that, who want those outside research opportunities, so that's great. Yeah, it's not the easiest to get by most places without a car in California, unfortunately. Doable, but not easy. Yeah, a lot of the programs are very small and get a lot of applicants. I've also heard from some professors that there are different leanings in what West Coast schools / East Coast schools look for stylistically/conceptually (as a general statement, not a rule, though), which is interesting to think about. Thank you, I wish all the best for you too! University of Oregon does seem really cool and their funding is great. But yeah, app fees add up so quickly, I feel that. ?
  5. Hey! I would think it's a really great sign that they looked into your website and reached out personally. They might remind everyone who started an app of upcoming deadlines, but it sounds like that was more than just a generic reminder sent to everyone. I had no idea they could look at slide room materials before they were submitted though, glad I didn't have that knowledge before my apps were in. ?
  6. Yeah, Govedare's great too! I didn't know his work prior, but it seems like the whole faculty line up is pretty stellar. I applied to Painting as well! That's understandable. What kind of interdisciplinary work are you hoping to do? I do painting and sculpture myself, but I applied for the painting options when I had to choose one.
  7. I applied to UW too! Ann Gale and Sangram Majumdar both being on the faculty there is just wild. Good luck with all of your apps!
  8. Congrats on your interviews so far! I'd love to chat with you about UCSB if you're interested and want to dm! UC Davis is also great, I have a friend who goes there and loves it.
  9. There can be pressure from some places, but you can ask for an extension if they give you a deadline to decide by and you're still unsure! It can feel tricky or awkward to have to ask, but deciding where to go is a huge decision, so try not to let anywhere rush you without knowing all of your options, including funding packages. Good luck too!!
  10. (I'll just reply here but direct this to everyone who replied.) Thank you guys so much for all of your thoughtful answers!!! Grad Cafe told me I'm not allowed to react to anymore posts today after liking all of them, so I can't reply to each one. ? But I really appreciate every answer. I just get caught up in overthinking it beforehand, personally, worrying that asking certain questions might make it seem like I haven't researched enough or was unprepared or something. I want to always try to ask something thoughtful, too. But I think they're usually just happy to answer whatever is asked and can expand on pretty much most things. I had an interview with UCSB today and it was honestly a really comfortable, fun, and engaging conversation, and not intimidating at all! I have high key anxiety in these situations (clearly haha), so it can be tough to let my personality show through, but this suggestion in particular was really helpful and I was able to loosen up and laugh and smile a lot in the interview, which felt great. It also definitely helped that the professor interviewing was so warm and responsive, which is a big plus for UCSB for me. Those who mentioned that you are interviewing the schools just as much as they're interviewing you are totally right too. Wishing good luck to everyone and peace of mind during the waiting game. ❤ (I also want to say to everyone, please try not to get discouraged if you don't get the news you want this time around. There are so many reasons that that could be, and none of them are to do with your worth as an artist. Sometimes it just comes down to timing. But best of luck either way!)
  11. Something I always struggle with is coming up with good questions to ask schools during interviews, so I'm asking for your suggestions once again. ? What are you guys asking?
  12. Just got an email to schedule an interview with SAIC Painting/Drawing. Check your emails and schedule asap to pick the time/day you want if you're interviewing with them!
  13. The spam calls are killing me. ? They're in full force this week and it is not the timing for it, haha.
  14. I'm glad it helped! I hope they can get the letters in asap. Thank you for the laugh and the beautiful portrait. ???
  15. Gmail sorted an email from a school (just an automated one about receiving the app) into my promotions tab so I almost missed it, and it reminded me about how last year someone missed an interview email, I think, because it went to their spam. So check spam/social/promotions boxes daily!
  16. Really nice work- I think you'd be an amazing fit for LCAD based on everything I've seen from them!
  17. Your transcripts cost $50?! That's awful, I have to submit them from two schools and one cost $2.50 for electronic copies and one costs $10 for mailed copies. Yeah, it's easy to skip over things accidentally when the info all starts to look the same and blend together when you're looking at so many apps.
  18. Yes, this!! Jeez, that's so scary over one class!
  19. Friendly reminder that some schools require official transcripts to be sent directly to them, as well as the unofficial ones that you provide. A lot don't ask for them until you get in, but a couple of schools I applied to require them with the app and I almost missed the fine print! I hope everyone is doing well and wish you all luck!
  20. I just got an email that Yale's deadline was extended from the 5th to the 9th.
  21. Oh no, thank goodness!! I'd have passed out probably, haha. It was on a couple of the UC apps. I don't remember which ones exactly, though.
  22. I've seen this question on almost every application I've done. I thought it was pretty standard. I was asked it at the end of an interview that went well too, and they said it was for their records or statistical purposes. I feel like it's possible they'd use it to gauge interest and where their school ranks in the scheme of things, but you could always not answer it on the apps if you don't want to. Can't really get out of it in the interview though if asked directly. I've been listing a few, but not my whole list since I haven't applied to all of them yet. Did you get any other weird vibes from Rutgers or was it mostly that? @painting549 The question that really gets me is when you have to rank which faculty members you want to work with in order and say why. ? It feels so embarrassing to do for some reason. I'm always afraid that I'm going to accidentally rank the person on the committee who might like my application lower or offend someone somehow, haha.
