  1. I'm still waiting in Winnipeg. I honestly wonder if the letter got lost in the mail somehow. I emailed SSHRC on Friday to ask what was going on, and they only told me that the letter had been mailed to my correct address on Feb. 28. I then asked for the results electronically, but still no response. Is the office shut down due to COVID-19? I don't really expect to get the award, but would still like to know.
  2. Please let me know if this is an improper use of this forum, but I am moving out of my apartment in Urbana in May to go have a baby back home, and it is available for sublet starting then (and still available for next year, for what it's worth). PM me if you are interested in a sublet, or feel free to ask any questions about the city.
  3. Any idea when SSHRC cheques will be mailed? The letter implied that the award would begin in late May...is it stupid to hope that they have already processed them if I sent in my paperwork a few weeks ago?
  4. Also successful (received today in Illinois). 3 year doctoral fellowship. Second application for doctoral SSHRC. Received score of 18.9 (at low end of acceptances, but good enough for me!) from the Fine Arts committee. MA SSHRC 2 international conferences and some minor grad things No publications Good GPA, some previous scholarships for good academic achievement, blah blah blah Some "real world" job experience For all of those who were successful (or perhaps more accurately, caught the reviewers at the right time of day when they were in a good or forgiving mood), congratulations. And my sympathies to those who weren't. I was pretty devastated last year when I got the rejection letter.
  5. I take it that those of us who are left are the expatriates, with no idea how to judge our arrival times against those who have received letters in Canada. I wonder if SSHRC has a date after which they will tell you your result if your letter has not yet arrived...
  6. Nothing in Illinois. I was sure it would be here by now--it's not that far from Ottawa...
  7. Hi Geek, I have those options available too, although it doesn't actually let me create a "final research report" form--not sure about you. I suspect these might be meaningless in our case, since they look more like things that would apply to faculty researchers and collaborators. I started panicking a bit upon realizing that the Michael Smith application is not available on my screen, but since I'm studying in the States, I'm not eligible for the CGS anyway (as apparently you are not either) so there is still a small amount of hope. Good luck, and I hope your results arrive soon!
  8. On the other hand, you might encounter an International Student Office where everyone is expressly FORBIDDEN to give you any tax advice. This was my experience (also with administrative workers in my home department). They must have given some bad information in the past and gotten sued or something. They just bought us a licence for a Turbo-Tax-esque program and basically said "you're on your own." I still shake my head when I think about this.
  9. Don't be too discouraged--each committee has its own guidelines and cutoffs. Last year, I didn't even make the waitlist, and my score was higher than some people who got awards. It's quite relative; there may be hope for you yet. I'm pretty sure you can email SSHRC to ask about your rank on the list, but if you do it right now it might take quite a while for them to reply. There will be a lot of movement anyway in the next few days as people decline awards or "downgrade" to take their award out of country.
  10. I think the cutoffs vary according to disciplinary committee. But be hopeful!
  11. But does Canada Post work on Saturdays? I doubt there was enough time for it to get into America's postal system by the weekend if the letters were only sent out on Friday afternoon...guess we'll see soon enough.
  12. What are the chances that letters will enter the US postal system in time to take of advantage of working Saturdays? Probably not good, but the sooner, the better! The waiting is killing me now that it's so close!
  13. Wow, my heart was pounding for a second there when I saw that more than 20 responses were posted today...next week; it's gotta be.
  14. Delay? Very frustrating; hope it's not true. My summer plans depend on this result! Not to mention the next few years of my program.
  15. Yes, you've got it right. Non-residents for American tax purposes, but in our case, we were also judged as non-residents of Canada for whatever reason after we filled out the forms to help them determine our status. I think the fact that we owned a house, but were renting it to a non-family member, actually worked against us here. That's true about the tax year though, so perhaps we've only got 3 months to make up instead of 8--that's a bit of relief anyway. Honestly, we're considering sending my wife back for six months so we can sell the house to a family member. This bill is going to be insane...like the health insurance, tuition differential fees, blah blah blah aren't already a big enough burden on a pitiful TA salary. Good luck paying into your TFSA (No, seriously, it should be possible unless you get an unfortunate financial surprise like we did.) Honestly, I don't know if it's in your best interest to fill out the residency forms or not. Some friends of ours ignored the whole thing and the Canadian government just kept treating them like residents for three years. They got sent their quarterly GST rebates and were even getting family allowance payments of $600 per month after they had a baby (sent to their American address)! On the other hand, if the government were to discover that now, they'd probably ask for all of that money back, which would be far worse than our situation...
  16. Chances are even later for the Master's award, judging by last year...but, as you've doubtless heard a million times by now, if your university has forwarded your application for the MA SSHRC it's basically guaranteed. I remember being in your position and doubting that, so I can empathize...but it'll all be OK!
  17. What's this about a delayed federal budget? I'm living in the States so I haven't kept up with everything...and counting on a date near the 15th too so I can accept or decline my department's TA offer for next year as needed...arrgh!
  18. This is a combination rant/call for advice/warning. It will probably not apply to the majority of readers, but tax laws are very punishing for Canadians studying abroad long-term who also own (and rent out) property in Canada. We're not real-estate speculators or anything like that, but my wife and I did want to keep our house (maintaining the delusion that I may be lucky enough to find a tenure-track position in our home town). So we found a tenant to rent it, and her payments are mostly covering our mortgage, insurance, property taxes, and the like. We're not making any money, but at least we were almost breaking even. Until...discovering that we are now required to pay 25% of our gross "income" in taxes since we are classed as non-residents of Canada. You can claim some deductions, like the property taxes, but not the mortgage payments. End result will be a bill of almost $2500 a year. Just thinking about this right now gives me chills...it's hard enough to scrape by on a TA salary, and I don't know how we're going to manage it. It's also too late to easily transfer ownership of the house to a family member in Canada, which would have been more attainable while we were still classed as residents. So, any ideas?
  19. I was filling out my taxes using Glacier Tax (my school bought a licence for all international students) and it said something about not paying taxes at all if your total income's under $10,000 (which it was last year, at least in the States, since I only moved here for the fall semester). Anyone else know anything about this before I get too excited?
  20. ZoSo--there is a way to see the complete list of award winners for each previous year. I don't know if they total the numbers anywhere, but you can look through to see who won, what their proposal title was, and what school they attend (as well as, for the doctoral fellowship, how many years they're getting funded @ $20,000 per annum). From what I recall, the lists were roughly the same length. All of us applying from outside the country will automatically be receiving the smaller award, so winners in Canada should have a better than 50% shot at the big money. Winners for last year can be found here (with minimal digging): http://www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/results-resultats/recipients-recipiendaires/index-eng.aspx
  21. Some of us are talking about a letter that is a step in between the standard "confirmation of receipt" and the final notice of award/denial. This is only for those who apply independently to SSHRC (not yet enrolled in grad studies, or not attending a Canadian institution). Having not gone through the panel of decision-makers at the university level, we need to be vetted to decide which applications are supposedly strong enough to stand up against those forwarded by the universities. So some of us are indeed getting a "result" of one kind or another; it's either a rejection, or acknowledgement that we are still in the running. But yes, no final results yet, unfortunately. For that, we'll all have to wait at least another six weeks if last year is any indication.
  22. I didn't get mine until May last year. Make sure you contact your school as soon as possible and tell them the situation--hopefully they'll understand and be able to help you out.
