I just discovered this forum, and I'm happy to have a place to check in (and whine about the waiting...).

I have no idea what my chances are of getting in. I finished my undergrad degree (political science) in 1996, and if I get in, I will be 50 when the program starts! I have some decent professional experience, but I had no academic references (only professional references). I'm not even sure how to calculate my GPA because my school used a 9-point scale back then.

On one hand, I'm trying to be philosophical about it, and on the other hand, I would really like to know so I can plan the rest of my year. My friends and family are very supportive, but honestly, what do they know?

Anyway, I'm just here to commiserate.

Congratulations on taking the step back into academia! It'll sure be interesting to see whats changed (and perhaps whats not changed) since your undergrad!

Has anyone got any updates? Still stuck on in review (PhD applicant).

Former NPSIA MA student - I think if you haven't heard by now, you're probably in the second round or later. But they still do send out acceptances as soon as they know how many first round applicants accept. When I was accepted, I got in around late-April or early-May (my undergrad GPA was 3.49/4.00).

I'm now a PhD applicant and I've been in review in progress by department for weeks. I've tried emailing asking if I'll hear back, as their website says PhD applicants should hear back by 31 March but I haven't gotten a response.

To avoid panic - I don't know this for sure. I'm just speculating that most if not all first round would likely have gone out by now. If you haven't got a rejection, it means you are a good candidate (but maybe others who made it first round were just slightly more competitive) and they're waiting to see what space and funding they have to dole out over the next months for the MA program.

I've been accepted to both Munk and GSPIA, but nothing from NPSIA yet. I'm stuck on recommended for assessment.  Have I been bumped to the 2nd round? I need to make my decision soon....

Hi everyone, quick question, and this might not be the place for it, so if it isn't just ignore or admin can take it down, no hard feelings! But I've been accepted to GSPIA and NPSIA and I'm struggling with my decision (I know this has been discussed 100x over) but someone might have an answer for me.

I took open studies at GSPIA last semester and it just felt like a continuation of undergrad, purely academic, nothing was different (granted I only took two classes, a mandatory one, and a special topics, so maybe not the best sense). However, NPSIA is known to be a feeder school for the public sector, specifically GAC. My dilemma is that I'm one of the odd few who wants to go into the private sector as a consultant and not do GAC.

Which school would be most appropriate in your guys opinion? I have 4 days to figure it out. Oops.

Thanks in advance, also, for anyone waiting, there's still lots of time. Additionally, last year I got rejected from NPSIA, and I just want to say that if anyone finds themselves in that position after this year and knows this is what they want, don't doubt yourself and give up! You all seem incredibly smart :)

I would agree with Gradinternational - while some NPSIA students do get an entry-level position with GAC, there are many more opportunities available and the school encourages you to think carefully beyond GAC. Many alumni do end up in government, but the co-op board has many private sector experiences (though I never did co-op as I started my MA working full time). I haven't been to GPSIA, but if you're right that it is more academic focused, I would choose NPSIA. NPSIA focuses on practical experience; many of the assignments are group work, writing briefing notes or presenting to the class. These build up your presentation skills, which are very important in consulting.

It’s unclear. From what I read, a lot of us are in the same place. It’s as though we are in limbo. What I think is possible is that they put everyone in “Recommended for Assessment” if you meet the requirements but aren’t a candidate to which they are ready to give an offer on the spot. Perhaps, after they reviewed every application, they will decide who makes it through the first wave.

For clarity, when I got in in 2021, I was admitted in April. I definitely don't think I was first-round, but you will hear back through March or April.

For my current PhD application, my status just changed to "review in progress by department" so I hope things are moving (I applied a month late).

Thanks for being generous about telling us your experience in the program :) Did you find the department was proactive in connecting people accepted to the program virtually prior to September? As someone who'd be moving to Ottawa if I get accepted, I'm just curious on if it was easy get in contact with people, or if there is much communication in the lead up to program start.

I don't think the admin facilitated this, but there's generally a Facebook group created by the NPSIA Student Association and they generally try to invite new people into it. I remember they planned a few social events before school started, which was great.

Thank you for this insight!! :) Follow-up question: Did you find it difficult to socialize within your specialization? Or is it small enough to know most people?

This is a bit more difficult for me to answer, because I was doing (and finished) NPSIA during COVID-19 and was also working full-time. However, I did find the cohorts were small enough and there were a lot of opportunities to socialize both within and between specializations. I think this would be especially true with in-person classes as well. I happened to make a lot of friends and meet people during the capstone course through NPSIA, which involves working for a client to produce original research in small groups, and couldn't recommend this class enough!

As a person looking to do a Masters in the first place I wanted to know your personal experience with the program if that's possible, did you find the experience worthwhile?

I found the program to be excellent, especially if you are looking to become employed in the government. NPSIA is unlike some other options in that it is a professional school, meaning that many of the assignments seek to be practical in nature (i.e. write a briefing note, do a group presentation, etc.) as opposed to theoretical. All of the professors I encountered were really passionate about their area of expertise, and were pretty informal with classes and really wanted to have conversations. Course enrolment can be a bit of a hassle, as many of the most popular courses are already gone by the time registration opens up for first-years. All of the IIA courses were full; however, I submitted a course registration override request in Carleton Central immediately and got into all my classes eventually.

The required statistics course was much easier than it has been in previous years (read: no more coding or learning complicated software). It's all about how to perform basic statistical analysis in Excel. The other required courses (law and public policy) were great too. Both of these courses rely on a 100% final exam, but they're not too difficult if you paid some attention to the recordings. I actually found the law exam to be fun. Both a pass/fail - no grade.

I did NPSIA during COVID, so I didn't really get to experience much of the student life. However, everyone was great about putting together study sessions online and supporting each other though the program. The level of collaboration and genuine wanting everyone to succeed was something I just didn't experience in undergrad.

  9. Hi everyone,

Wondering if there's anyone here who applied to the NPSIA PhD program? I'm a NPSIA MA grad (convocated in October 2021), and really enjoyed the program. Seeking to do my PhD to build some "expertise" and authority on IA and Security. I applied late to the program (just submitted a few days ago) because I was battling with whether I should or shouldn't, but after talking with some profs, made the leap. If anyone knows - do they accept PhD students from the second-round?

Otherwise happy to answer any questions about the MA program. I was in the IIA stream.

Sooo any one hear anything back regarding the Override requests??  All I received back was a note advising if space opened up they would reconsider.  Did manage to register for  5410 Canada in INTL Affairs tho.

And if anyone is in Ottawa and would like to meet for coffee drop me a pm.

I got an automated email saying I could register in 5244. The email indicated I had one day to do so, or they would move on down the list.

Afaik it's based on your student ID number.  mine is 75 soooo, yeah.......

Mine ends in 34 and I got the 10am slot.

Though I wonder if the assignment of the last two digits is random? It doesn't seem very fair that students who are lucky get first pick while classes fill up fast. Hopefully there will be some movement and courses open up again. I'm not particularly thrilled with taking Intell & International Affairs so when other courses open up I might try to snag one in the CON field instead.

    Mine is 1430 hrs....  ?

I was planning on Terr&Intl Sec for the Fall also.

    Winter maybe:

    INAF 5214    Econ

    INAF 5224    Intell & NatSec

    INAF 5225    Cyber in Canada

    INAF 5301     Strategic Foresight

But that all hinges on what is left at 2:30pm of course...  lol

So Terr&Intl Sec is full. I successfully enrolled in it, refreshed the page and it was gone (and full).....

So the big registration day is tomorrow.   Since we all have to do 5011, 5012 & 5016, what is the 4th course people are signing up for?  Especially those in IIA??

I'm hoping to do INAF5244 (Terrorism and Intl Security).

For the Winter, I'm planning to register in:

5015 - Rrsch Design Method Int Affair

    5214 - Economics for Defence & Secur

5225 - Cybersecurity in Canada (I wanted to do counterterrorism in lieu of this, but it didn't work with my work schedule).

What time is your registration? Mine is at 10am.

    Hey,

has anyone received any updates from NPSIA? Like how to register and stuff?

NPSIA will be releasing the Fall timetable on 8 June (so you can see what time classes are at). I emailed and NPSIA confirmed all of its classes will be online, either synchronous or asynchronous (up to the instructor). Registration for courses opens on 3 July for new graduate students.

    Hey everyone,

I think I'm having some trouble with Carleton central. Do the rest of you have content under category  of 'view holds and conditions of offer'? I would assume that this is where I'd see the requirement for sending in transcript/ fulfilling my econ requirements, but there is nothing there.

Your conditions are noted in the graduate admissions modal; I think the 'view holds and conditions of offer' are for financial holds and undergraduate admissions.

Does anyone know when Carleton usually posts their timetable of classes for the Fall? I'm curious to see when the mandatory classes are so I can start figuring out how I'm going to fit them in with work.

Hey all, just looping myself in now. I'm also at the anxious "recommended for assessment" stage, and I have to say it's a little more daunting after seeing some of the credentials being thrown around in here. It's fair to say everyone in here is certainly talented enough for NPSIA.

My background is pretty solid, and my application went well enough. I submitted way back in September just because I want this so badly.

What are some of your dream jobs you are hoping to get after NPSIA?

    Cheers

Do you know when your status moved to recommended for assessment? I'm still at review in progress (but I finished my application 31 January).

Any idea when NPSIA will send out first round acceptances?  Based on the last few years' forums, it seems like it can be anytime between Feb 27 to March 15. The only reason i ask (beyonds being anxious) is that I already received an offer from GSPIA and have been granted two extensions, however, i doubt i could ask a third time without pissing them off..

Fingers crossed we all get some good news in the next 2-3 weeks!

I also ran into this issue. I got accepted into the MSc Conflict Studies program at the London School of Economics. They need me to reply whether I will be taking up my place or not soon. I emailed Carleton about what I should do and they said:

"Applicants considered in the first round of offers will hear back in early March. This said, obviously this timeline may extend if your application is not considered until the second round. In situations like this I recommend accepting your alternative offer, and should you later receive something from NPSIA and wish to change you can at that time."

What streams was everyone looking at getting into?  I'm hoping for the Intelligence/IA or Security and Defence Policy streams.

Intelligence was my first choice, second choice was conflict analysis.

To be honest, I actually think I'd prefer my second choice at this point. I thought studying the intelligence stream would be interesting, but when I think of potential topics for a research essay, my mind goes straight to conflict and its inter-generational effects on economic prosperity, health and ultimate state survival.

That is a difficult position to be in.... A full time job and doing a masters program will keep you busy... lol

Found this guide from Carleton while looking for ideas:  https://carleton.ca/polisci/graduate/ma-program/masters-thesis-and-essay-guidelines/

Check out the last paragraph for the research paper option!

For me I'm probably stopping at the Masters.  While I would like to, I'm little to old to be doing a PhD option honestly.  The need for a full time job out weighs the PhD...

Interesting! I'll definitely have to think about it more, but it does sound (from the Carleton website), like the research paper could be worthwhile and still make me eligible for a PhD!
