Folks, decisions are out!

Folks, decisions are out!!!

People, there is still a chance for some to get a scholarship from Harvard. For folks who turn down offers, some scholarships are awarded to other candidates. There is precedent for this, just back in 2018. I checked the HKS 2018 forum and found a person who got the PSF ($100K) in mid April, out of the blue. One reason this happens quite a few times is that candidates who get a significant aid from Harvard have probably also gotten the full ride at Princeton. And most go for the $160K bumper rather than Harvard's $60-100K. (If it's a Harvard full ride, then it's a different matter; but even then we had one of our forum members declining it this very year.) The chances are slim, but you never know. Try to stay positive and expect to get lucky! I keep telling myself that.
-
You never know. You could be accepted. Funding chances might be slim.
-
I personally agree with this almost fully. CPL are easily a notch higher in difficulty than securing admissions.
-
First the Matt intel, now the CPL invitation. You're already playing in a different league than most of us here!
-
I checked his LinkedIn. His term at HKS came to an end in Dec 2020. Great intel.
-
Thank you so much for this. The mystery just got cleared so much. Matt was amazing! I have no idea what to expect now. My theory of core mails and stuff are probably out of the window. I'm starting to believe the results can come any day.
-
They don't give dates. Instead, when the 'admitted' blog hits, one can be safe to expect it in 2-3 days max.
-
Logical. What I can't fathom is how they may do away completely with the whole series of mails which were central to understanding admissions process. Perhaps they could truncate the period (from 2 week to 1 week). As long as they get the 5 core mails out in this week.
-
If HKS announce their results today, this will be the most disappointing performance on their admissions blog front, ever. There was a reason why the Decision process mails used to be posted. It was to pace things and inform candidates of some basic yet important aspects, especially like application update status (not everyone ought to be a master at knowing how and where to check and all in the face of heightening tension) I cannot believe that an adcoms team as competent as that of HKS couldn't find the time to post blogs with almost the exact content from previous years to keep the traditional flow going. Even the pandemic doesn't merit such a departure from tradition. So I will continue to believe that normalcy will resume shortly and we will see the Decision process blog popping up in our mails. But hey, I am definitely not complaining if it's today!

Agreed! The feeling of indignation for this year's folks is validated 100%. Judging from the things they are yet to do, I feel 30th to be a more feasible date. I hate it and I am praying that I'm proven wrong. Usually, HKS does a brilliant job with their admission blogs. Systematically prepare the candidates for what's to come and what to keep in mind. For anyone who wants to go down the blog memory lane, below is the blog archive. Just choose the year you want to see at the top in the 'month' drop down. https://hksadmissionblog.tumblr.com/archive

So I checked the blogs from the start (2012) till 2020. Sharing a few insights with everyone to help them function in life (I've been there, so I know how miserable these days must have been). Decision day: 2012: Tuesday 2013 : Wednesday & Friday (Once upon a time, they used to release MPP/MPA-ID on different dates) 2014 : Thursday 2015-2017 : Wednesday 2018-2020 : Thursday (Not so much of a Thursday monopoly, is it?) The sequence of mails leading to D-day have differed over the years, but some core mails have been absolute certainties (The frustrating/scary part is that they haven't even begun yet for this year. Maybe today's the day it starts) 1. Three types of decisions, starting with not admitted 2. Waitlisted 3. Admitted 4. Application update (Basically showing candidates how the screenshot of an application status update will look like in the portal) 5. An informal take on the behind the scenes of the admissions process (Matt's computer, the room, etc) Look out for 'Decision Process' series of mails. Frankly, I'm confused about the 25th as D-day because all the previous years had multiple entries in this series (15+). If I consider 25th as the date, you should be getting at least 4 mails on consecutive dates starting from 22nd (could be from 20th/21st as well). They usually avoid sending on Sat/Sun, but have done in the past on some occasions. Bottom line: If you see a 'Decision Process' blog hitting today, it is safe to assume that the real countdown has begun. I encourage all to go through the archives to take some stress out and see how it has been over the years. There are pictures and all, which humanizes the admissions process. Gotta feel for Matt and his team. Hope this helps.

I meant only the MPP. And the 45 are the ones who filled. Obviously, a lot of them didn't.
-
I checked the HKS status sheet. Of the 45 candidates who had filled, only 5 were given the deferral to 2021. That's 11.1%. Don't know if this is the appropriate sample to take, but kind of tells the story.
-
Haha, that's some crazy GRE score you've got there! Not pretending in the least to be an adcoms member, but your application seems very strong. Did HKS ask for a policy analysis essay this time?
-
Don't exactly remember the scholarship date. Admissions result date was 19th March evening (Eastern time). Was probably right after.
-
Do you have a good GRE quant score? Did you have quant heavy stuff in your work ex/college curriculum? Did you work for a developmental org? If you have all these, you are very competitive. Of course, the SOP and LOR have to be kickass.
-
Oh damn. I should have paid more attention to your username! It's a habit telling people the amazing scholarships they should be applying to.
-
The 15/85 is what the sheet looked like when I had checked. I'm sure it has changed somewhat (def. sure that 2021 had fewer deferrals by some margin).
-
The thing is that HKS has a bigger reach. The "brand", the kind of connections, and exposure are kind of unmatched (Check out the Institute Of Politics at HKS). But definitely not so better as to warrant a disregard a full ride from Princeton. But I have heard that Princeton is for certain profiles. HKS lets you go into an IGO or into a McKinsey as well. Basically, the entire spectrum. Therein lies the appeal to many candidates. Folks who still wanna explore the 2 years and do not want to be tied to one area.
-
I would go on a limb and say that MPA/ID probably had the most deferrals for the exact reason you stated. (full of int'l students) I hope you're applying for the JJ/WBGSP scholarship (Only available for MPA/ID among HKS programs). The grandfather/mother of all scholarships! I wish I could share the sheet for last year with you all. Have no idea where it is. (although might not be the legal thing to do)
-
To give you an idea of how HKS admissions blogs were last year. Check out the blogs leading to the decisions. (16th-19th March 2020 on the trot) https://hksadmissionblog.tumblr.com/archive/2020/3

A few more pointers to consider while choosing between these two are: 1. Do you like an intimate class size? 1-on-1 with professors. Immersion perhaps at a greater level (Go for Princeton) 2. Do you want to take interdisciplinary courses and from other schools? (Harvard is amazing in this. HBS, HLS, HGSE, Cross courses from MIT and Fletcher as well) Princeton does not have graduate schools like law, business, education etc.
-
The answer will have some caveats. From what I have researched, Princeton is a lot into US domestic sector and Foreign Service sector. In terms of selectivity, a Princeton accept has a great chance at being an HKS accept. What is important is what have you applied for (as in your SOP, vision). These schools understand candidate profiles very well and sometimes intentionally reject candidates not because they aren't good enough, but that the candidate will probably choose the other program. The Princeton MPP is the equivalent of the HKS MPA, since both target experienced professionals. HKS MPP is similar to the Princeton MPA program. If both give full rides, I have heard people choosing HKS, because it's Harvard. This part has a lot of validity for international students and matters significantly. (Apparently, people outside of US are not as aware of Princeton as they should be; sad). Having said that, quite a number of people have gone for Princeton over HKS. Two reasons: 1. No full ride at Harvard. Princeton always gives. 2. Their interests align with Princeton much better than with Harvard.
