Interestingly, Princeton and Harvard usually come out with their results not too far apart. In the policy world, these two are truly considered in a league of their own. What makes it tricky is that a Princeton offer comes with the full ride (incredible, every time I think about it!), but that's not the case necessarily with Harvard. And Harvard knows that very well. There is a case of not letting the other school get away with the creme de la creme. Princeton usually comes first, so the folks wait to hear from Harvard. And since the no. of full rides at Harvard aren't a lot (as far as I know), most of the common folks (between the two) go for Princeton. There have been exceptions, though.

Deferrals normally would happen under exceptional circumstances. Family/personal emergency or medical issues. This time, I guess deferrals will go back to being the normal way. Very few people get deferrals in the first place. 2020 would probably be the only year in history with so many deferrals. But the year itself was one of a kind, so it makes perfect sense.
-
I do believe that the deferrals will have an impact. I do not have an idea as to why the 2021 vs 2022 split was so uneven. I did not get any scholarships from HKS last year. Hence waiting for the scholarship results which come out right after the admission results.
-
No idea about the MPA program, tbh. Sorry! But if I had to guess, it wouldn't be a whole lot different. HKS came under great pressure especially because HBS rolled out the unconditional deferrals earlier.
-
Yes, 2022-2024. People were devastated. I know a candidate who gave up on the offer.
-
Last year, HKS did the unprecedented and allowed unconditional deferrals. You guys should have seen the outrage among the selected students in the days leading to this decision. We had multiple zoom webinars (180-200) where we discussed stuff like tuition reduction (10/30/50%) and transparency w.r.t. how classes will be conducted, compensation for a lack on in-person experience etc. We filled out a bunch of google forms and submitted letters to HKS. As deferrals were unconditional, Harvard received a deluge of requests. So they announced the following: some will get a 1 year deferral and others will get a 2 year deferral. And the distribution was lopsided. I believe I am one of the few students who had been given a 1 year deferral( the last time I checked the sheet filled by admitted students, the split was 85%(2y) to 15%(1y). HKS proposed the deferral policy in early June and announced the result around mid July.

I was selected to the cohort of 2020. Applied for a deferral and got into the 2021 cohort. I am awaiting the scholarship results.

Last year, I did hear that Matt and co. would check GradCafe's HKS pages from time to time. They probably come with popcorn and soda.

Does anyone have any idea about the funding amount for the The Scott and Isabelle Black Fellowship?
-
I believe I can offer some info. I was just contacted for checking my registered address as Harvard would be sending the Winter Magazine in the next few weeks. It does seem cryptic that Harvard would be sending to current applicants this year. But I wouldn't read too much into it. They are pretty good at guarding these admission secrets. No rookie mistakes. As for the Public Service Fellowship, there are no interviews as far as I know. You just get notified in MYFAID portal. Interviews are mainly for CPL ones. Being a finalist for CPL fellowships is a big thing! There is truth when it is said that the process is separate from that of the HKS one. Fellowship committees get to only read resume, LORs and the essays specific to the their specific essays. No GRE scores, no HKS essays or anything else (not that there is a lot more left). You all will get through this! Hoping for a wonderful March!

Thanks! This is pretty late. In fact, going by last 4-5 years data, this is very late.
-
Does anyone have any clue when the results are coming out? As in, some tentative dates.
-
No, I don't believe so. It's only for the CPL fellowships. You get to know about PSF result either on the day of the HKS result/few days after that.
-
I believe they don't inform if you haven't been selected. Speaking from last year's experience.
-
Are there any interviews for the Public Service Fellowships? I know there are for CPL, but not sure about PSF.
-
I really hope you are reading the right thing! But, if I recall, HKS releases the results around Mid March. Last year, our result came out on 19th March. There is a legendary analysis of HKS result date based on a prediction model in last year's HKS thread. Did they declare a date for this year? It has always been mid March, as far as I know.

I will offer my conjecture. One key data-point from the deferral demographics is that most of them are international students (makes perfect sense). So that's a rather homogeneous bunch HKS has on its hands. Then, there is a wise saying that a recession (can be extended to a pandemic now, I guess) is a good time to be a student. So, HKS must have anticipated a huge influx of applications for 2021. But the catch is that HKS had to decide on the distribution of deferrals (being so many) between '21 and '22 by July 2020. So they offered a pretty low number of 2021 deferrals (Note: mostly international students) to preserve the diversity and heterogeneity that HKS prides on, all the while having a manageable number of applicants and accepts. This way, they wouldn't have to resort to a drastic change in selection strategy. Just my two cents. I would love to hear more views on this and would love to stand corrected. Fun fact: We received a mail from HKS that some students had engaged in auctioning their 2021 seats to 2022 bidders. Needless to say, HKS wasn't thrilled.

Hello folks. I got selected to the HKS MPP class of 2020, but got a deferral to 2021 in light of the COVID uncertainty. One thing to be taken into consideration is that there will be people like me who have received the 2021 deferral (albeit not a high number given the majority of 2020 admits who requested for deferral have been moved to 2022). This will probably make the situation a little trickier for the current incoming batch. Regarding the topic of fellowships, the CPL fellowships are very generous from what I inferred from last year's research. Most of them cover close to full tuition with some offering stipends on top of tuition (that could be a little different this year). They are very specific to the body of work you've done and will do. Not to be a party popper, but the fellowships are notoriously difficult to bag. (You should see the CPL fellows brochure. Yikes!) @sup5505 Congrats on converting Sloan!!! It wouldn't hurt to email HKS and keep them in the loop. As for your profile, it is more about the qualitative aspects of your experience, more than just numbers. I think you have a strong application. Your GRE scores fall within their range and your quant heavy background should hold you in good stead. (Inside news suggests that HKS looks for at least a 160 on Quant. But that is not set in stone.) About the posts this year, they do seem to be few and far between, especially compared to last year. Don't worry, folks. You have done the real part. Try to relax (as if that's helpful!) and hope for the best! I hope to be classmates with a lot of you come fall 2021!

Joint Japan/World Bank Scholarship 2020
AnoIchi replied to AnoIchi's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Thanks! I got accepted for the MPP program at Harvard Kennedy School and am anxiously waiting for the scholarship application. May I ask where are you from? -
Hey Guys, Couldn't find a thread for the scholarship this time, so thought might wanna open this up. Any news on when the application link will be available on the official website?
-
Any international student with an admit to HKS (MPP) with no funding? What are you all thinking about the offer? I have an offer from Harris ($20k/year) on the table. Given Harvard's no reconsideration policy, is the prospect of taking on a loan too big a burden, even if it's Harvard?
-
Same here. Is it safe to assume that applicants who haven't gotten any aid "yet" are not getting any at all?
-
Got accepted with an aid of 20k. Congratulations to all who got in!

Hello! May I ask when did you submit your application?
