  1. @hcms1 I'm completely with you. I shudder at the thought of delaying my postgraduate plans - I'd rather start on time with virtual classes rather than delay my life by even half a year. NYU hasn't said otherwise yet, so I'm just hoping they're sticking to Fall 2020.
  2. @doingthingshere I accepted it too - see you there was great to get the email from the CDS saying that they fully intend to have classes in place come Fall 2020. that was all i needed, really
  3. @david0217 you and me both buddy it's otherwise a fantastic programme. If you do some searching through the Gradcafe forums, you'll see that most people feel NYU DS is superior to Columbia DS. Some are even saying Columbia DS is a cash cow. Some things NYU has going for it: - Dedicated data science school (CDS) - Legendary data scientist on faculty (Yann Le-Cun) - Rigorous program - Apparently very competitive (despite the 150 cohort size) I haven't heard back from Columbia DS yet, but if I were you, I'd go with NYU by a fair margin.
  4. I'd love to hear some advice on this too. Out of curiosity, did you receive funding for NYU DS?
  5. @statsday Thanks for the advice! Now I realise I should have taken the prerequisites a lot more seriously. With that said, I have now received offers from NYU MS DS, Columbia QMSS and CMU MSPPM:DA! I consider myself extremely lucky - will spend dedicated time studying up on calculus and linear algebra before the course (Covid 19 permitting).
  6. @prokem Thank you so much for your optimism; I am extremely nervous that I would be prevented from studying in the US later this year too.
  7. Is this the CMU MSPPM DA program? I got accepted into this too; I'm surprised you'd choose CMU over UChicago and Columbia - keen to understand your reasoning.
  8. Hi, to all candidates admitted to NYU MS DS, were any of you notified about scholarship / funding? Apparently they have already sent out awards for these.
  9. @hellobello Through the portal - it updated between refreshes. What a surprise! Mine came through later than the others, so potentially yours may just be coming through.
  10. @plsgivemeanoffer That's very reassuring - thanks. The living costs and evening classes won't be a deal breaker for me. I am envious of your Stanford offer though - was my dream school at the start of this process! Congrats! Are there any offers you would take over Stanford?
  11. Hi all, I just got accepted into NYU Data Science too! The past few months have been so stressful; it's great to finally have an offer. Would also love to hear some advice on how good the program is, so I can weigh up my options should other offers come in.
  12. @Camila92 Congrats on some great outcomes - If you don't mind sharing, what is your academic background, work experience, GPA and GRE like? I was turned down from the Chicago MSCAPP and am still wondering where things went wrong.
  13. Maybe a bit optimistic with Stanford and Chicago stats then - it's somewhat relieving to clarify that my lack of calculus/linear algebra would be my main issue! @whiteshark243 thanks, I'm looking into the UCLA Business Analytics course right now and think I might be a good fit. I will look for other similar programs. Do you have any suggested programs that would be a good fit for my profile? @bayessays appreciate the honesty.
  14. Hi everyone, I'm looking for some much-needed feedback and advice for data science / statistics applications for Fall 2020. I started applications late last year, and after receiving a few recent rejections, I am now concerned that I've overshot my applications. I am asking for: Feedback on my profile below, and my chances on the programmes I've applied for thus far (be brutally honest) Any recommendations on safer programmes I can still apply for Any other advice you can give Current occupation: Management Consultant at Deloitte, 2 years experience Undergrad institution: University of Auckland (ranked first in New Zealand but 100+ globally) Majors: Bachelor of Commerce (Economics major) and Bachelor of Laws conjoint GPA: Commerce: 8.0 / 9.0 Law: 5.909 / 9.0 Type of student: International Asian male Courses taken: math, stats and programming: STATS 108 Statistics for Commerce: A+ INFOSYS 110 Business Computing: A MATHS 108: General Mathematics 1: A+ COMPSCI 111G Introduction to Practical Computing: A- ECON 381 Foundations of Economic Analysis: A+ ECON 221 Introduction to Econometrics: A ECON 321 Econometrics: A Recommenders: Consulting director from my workplace: Very strong recommendation, worked closely with him over a year Ex-team coach who supervised a startup I worked on in 2016: Very strong recommendation, close relationship Economics professor: Haven't seen his recommendation, but I don't expect it'd be very strong (I didn't have any other options for the academic recommendation) Work experience: Tax Consulting Internship (3 months), Management Consultant at Deloitte (2 years) with many data-relevant projects GRE General: V165 (96%), Q170 (96%), AWA 5.0 (92%) Scholarships: Fulbright scholarship (conditional on acceptance into a school) My main concerns: Unimpressive GPA (despite strong performance in all quant-heavy courses), lack of technical and quantitative depth in my background, and weak academic recommendation Application statuses: Applied: Columbia: Data Science Columbia: QMSS UPenn: Data Science NYU: Data Science Harvard: Data Science CMU: MSPPM Rejected: Stanford: MS Statistics Chicago: MSCAPP Chicago: Statistics Thinking of applying for: UCLA: Applied Statistics Any advice would be greatly appreciated; starting to wonder at my chances at getting into any of the above.
