It's not clear to me if the did connection matters. Is there any reason to believe that it does?

No idea, one way or another.  I have no idea what goes on in the selection panels.  That's why I'd like to know after the fallout settles.

I think that in general, the way to win NSF is fairly different from winning NDSEG. NSF is much more transparent about their process and they are looking for specific thingsbroader impacts and  intellectual merit and all that they encompass, diversity in a variety of forms (e.g. geographic), and other items. As a result of their process being more transparent, there are alot more tricks you have to know to totally play defense and prevent yourself from giving the reviewers an excuse for a rejection.

NDSEG seems more cut and dry. They don't give you feedback, so the process if very opaque. They claim to have some selection criteria, but I don't know how strictly its used. I would be unsurprised if there were quota's and cutoffs based upon GPA and school. In other words, the fellowship is less holistic, which I think is unfortunate and ultimately not the best way of selecting students.

A big problem with both fellowships is when students' advisors just write the research statement, or the writing is pulled from their Prof's research proposal. At least for NDSEG, this advantage is less unfair since there are just less tricks to be incorporated.

However, I'm interested to hear how people wrote their applications. I was an NSF winner so maybe I'm just less familiar with this fellowship.

One thing I'd be interested to know is what percentage of winners/alts vs rejects had prior DoD connections.  It seems that at least some of us here have already done some work for the DoD in one way or another, and that may or may not be a point in favor.

You can tell that he has also given up hope on the process.

Honestly though, what kind of technical issues could actually be holding the process up? I mean at this rate they could just fax the applications back and forth and it would be faster...

Poor Rob.  I really do think he deserves a huge round of applause and some kind of thank-you gift for putting up with our crap and the DoD's crap.

Does anyone still have fax machines anymore?  My old job had one and the only thing it was ever used for was getting fax spam (which is apparently a thing).

Given the way the application has gone, I wonder if those accepted are able to get some kind of assurance, contractual or otherwise, that they will actually receive the promised funds in timely manner? Were I to get offered the fellowship, I would definitely be looking into this and requesting some type of assurance from the DoD and/or sysplus.

Speaking from experience with SysPlus (the administer the SFFP program as well, which I've worked on) - they do pay on time and accurately.  I never had any problems with that.  They have other problems, sure (although here it sounds like it's not necessarily entirely on them), but their payroll department seemed to have their shit together pretty well.

  5. I just got an email and the subject line started with "Accepted".  I had a glorious nanosecond of hope, crushed by the immediate realization that it was just a meeting acceptance from my colleague in Saudi Arabia.

That's enough incentive for them to get it out eventually, but not enough incentive to release today vs Monday.

(I reallyyyyyyy want to be wrong, but with how many times this has been pushed back I don't think it's gonna happen today)

I'm with you on this - I'm kind of running low on hope that they'll tell us soon.  Admittedly, if it pushes people to commit to the GRFP or some other fellowship before hearing about this, that's good for those of us who didn't get the GRFP, and doesn't really hurt people who did - both are well-paying, prestigious fellowships.

I don't have high hopes for today. Since they already blew past the April 15th deadline they no longer have incentive to release results by a certain date. I think we're probably looking at a Monday release, at the earliest.

They do have an incentive - it's called getting us to stop emailing them ?

    MFW.

The sheer number of views. People must be wondering what is going on in this thread !

Honestly, at this point even I'm not sure what's going on in this thread.

Basically, there is no healthy reason to worry about the dates.

I can't speak for everyone, but I'm not worried anymore - I just find some perverse enjoyment in coming up with ever more ridiculous explanations for them with the full acknowledgement that I have no basis for doing so.

    The dates mean everything!!!!

    The dates mean nothing!

If they're having IT problems, maybe the dates just mean they're dicking around in applications trying to fix broken things

oh no, no, no - definitely not. Like a drunkard walk, I sometimes stumble in the right direction, but I usually find myself going in circles. Usually, I can blame it on coursework, grant applications, etc. I'm not sure if 'helping make history on an internet forum' holds as much weight as those two

This is just part of the grant application.  Right?  Right?

At least we now know the emails might not come all at once. And that it will be via email and not portal (I specifically asked that and he said email in his response).

That's actually good to know - no need to check the portal repeatedly then.  Thanks for digging on this.

man so many people got the NSF?? makes me feel crappy for not even getting HM

Eh, I kinda felt that way at first, but it also really depends on your field.  I do combustion, and the NSF really doesn't fund combustion work nearly as much as the Air Force does, so I feel like that hobbled my application a little compared to what I could put in the NDSEG proposal.

I don't think so. The dropdown menus are just links to those other parts of the website. We can't actually access them

Pretty sure SysPlus would frown on us actually editing their website.

Exactly right. And what better way to store ranks/evaluations than to "update" your record

I'm not sure whether to find this comforting or additionally stressful right now.

I don’t know if I’ve said this on here before...but this wait has been harder than the wait for grad school. For those of you waiting for grad school results too, I just can’t imagine

At first, I applied to undergrad and thought "Man, this sucks"

Then, I applied for jobs and thought "Wow, this really sucks"

Then, I applied for grad school and thought "Okay, this is really as bad as it gets"

And then, I applied for fellowships...

ahhh okay thank you. Yep, 12/11, looks like I am december gang too. What is the prevailing  theory about how updates have to do with results? That if it was updated in December it's a  no go?

There is no prevailing theory, really.  #DecemberGang may not have survived initial review, but the consensus is we have no idea.
