Are you an undergrad skipping a masters?
micromajor2011 replied to micromajor2011's topic in Waiting it Out
Glad to see im not alone, thought I'd be with a lot of students quite a bit older than me but I see thats not the case totally. -
Just a little curious about the amount of applicants here that are currently undergraduates seeking a PhD, I myself am one. Im applying to biomedical sciences/immunology programs. I know in this field alot of people opt to skip a masters but I work in a lab currently with a lot of masters students and I sometimes wonder why they didn't just skip the masters degree and go right for a PhD unless it was grade issues or international students. Sometimes I do wonder if students with masters have a better shot than undergrads also? Anyone else an undergrad going for a PhD?

So I took it upon my self to email a POI at a school that I have applied too. To my surprise he asked me to set up an appointment to me with him. If I am able to "Wow" him and he offers me a chance to work in his lab, would I still need to do an interview through the school as well? Also would I still be admitted without doing another interview? Im only asking because this schools set-up is every grad student entering must do 3 lab rotations first, but If I pick one off the top and he offers me a place in his lab Im not sure how that would workout if that is even an option at this type of school. Just curious. Thanks for your answers and feedback!

Wanted to bring this back up, because im not really seeing many people who applied here. Is there really no one else? and if so have you gotten any word on your status yet or an interview. acceptance?

I did just that and ... Here is what the email reply stated: We have reviewed your application, and right now we have you in the Interview Wait List. We are waiting to see how many applicants we can invite in for interviews, which are required for admission. I hope to be able to tell you something definitive by March 1. There is still a chance that you will be invited in, but right now it is hard to say what that chance is, as we have many more applications to review. So I guess its not so bad.

How would you interpert this response?

What if the first round of invites have already been sent? Seem like im more of a "if we have more money, we can interview" ,applicant. atleast thats the way I see it -

Its understandable considering how low my GRE score is, but I have a strong application if they get past that. Im hope to be given a shot. -

So I emailed ut houston today to see my chances of getting an invitation to an interview and I was told that my application has been reviewed and ive been placed on a interview waitlist. She also said they have more applications to review still and that my invitation to an interview is dependent upon how many people they can admit. My question is has anyone else been in a similar situation? im glad its not an out right reject but is it really a chance ill still get an interview?

For your UAB application, when did you submit it and how long did it say "Your Application is in program review" ? I turned mine in for immuno on dec 13.

Anyone ever accepted with a low GPA to grad school?
micromajor2011 posted a question in Questions and Answers
Just wondering if you know anyone or if you are someone that has been accepted to graduate with a low GPA or even low GRE score? Just for us people out there that are applying in similar situations. -
Anyone apply to Ut-Houston GSBS in the immunology department? Just trying to see how many applicants might be out there. I applied for the Ph.D progam, alothough i think thats all they offer anyway.

I just took the GRE today and score pretty poorly despite memorizing all 500 words of the pratice and doing numerous practice tests. my GPA is 3.23 for my major (Microbiology) and I scored a 810 on the GRE. I have reserach experience and even have manuscript pending to be published. I am still currently working in lab. I'm wondering if it is even worth my time to take it again, or if I will still have a chance to get into schools such as Vanderbilt/ UT houston Graduate school of Biomedical science. Just wondering if anyone else has some adivce or has had a similar experience.
