  1. I'm going to overhaul my wardrobe. I have issues with spending money on myself (a problem a lot of people would love to have, I'm sure!) and there are a lot of "essentials" that I'm missing- a white button down shirt, cardigans, black heels... getting into graduate school is going to be a pretty clear sign that I need to stop dressing like a tomboy (polka dot rainboots go with black dress pants.. right?) and start accessorizing. I'm also going to treat all my coworkers to fancy cupcakes from the cupcake store in town for putting up with me.
  2. I'm going to guess... Accept - 3 Waitlist - 1 Reject - 2 Also, it would be interesting for people to come back and post here after all is said and done to see how close they were.

Dead on! I don't think there are that many other applicants with my research interests and although I haven't (and wouldn't) post anything that would reflect negatively on me, I'm still nervous. As for being nervous about applications.. I think I'm actually less nervous than I was applying to undergrad. I can't think of anything substantial that I could have improved upon (well, except my SOP.. but after five/six/seven revisions I was just DONE) so I'm pretty secure just waiting to see where the chips fall. If I could give anything to all of you it would be confidence. After lurking around here (and the Comp Lit forum too- they do have a nice community going!) I see a lot of people saying they aren't going to get in anywhere or that xyz should have been better/stronger/higher. But- just my opinion- if you're passionate about something, if you couldn't imagine yourself happy doing anything else, then somehow everything will work itself out. Optimism = the greatest weapon we have at our disposal during this waiting period. Also, have any of you ever had people ask you what you're going to do with a degree in art history? I get this question all the time and I think I've come up with a pretty badass answer.
  4. I've only ever been at the tail end of winter.. so beautiful, SO COLD. But between Moosewood, that amazing place with tofu burritos, the waffle restaurant, huge used bookstore and thrift shop, the hiking... I was in heaven.

Oh, another modern architecture person- exciting! I'm not applying to any of the schools on your list but I'm applying to the same number (six). Good luck!
  6. Within my field, I'd probably want to go for golden age Dutch painting (maybe.. portraiture?) Otherwise, culinary school and a job at a vegetarian restaurant like Moosewood.

I got a strange one that said that my application had been sent to the department but that I shouldn't assume that my application was complete. Uh, what? And hang tight, everyone!
  8. Cornell and BU. Cornell because the interface was terrible, you couldn't skip around to different sections and every time you logged back in you got plunked back at the beginning. Also, every time one of my recommenders submitted a letter I got an email asking me to confirm it, but the process for doing so was never really clear to me. BU because I sometimes had a hard time finding the link to the application after logging in. I also kept forgetting that technically I had a BU ID #; every time I saw that option I ignored it because I thought it was only for current BU students (hur).
  9. Finally finished as of this morning. Time to relax.. or rather, try and relax.

Hey everyone! I'm applying to six Ph.D programs and looking to specialize in 20th century architecture. I'm also working two jobs right now, so with the added work of applications my free time seems to have gone missing. I actually have an interview this Thursday (that I requested- the website said you could so I went for it!) so I'm currently devouring one of my POI's books. I'm done with the GRE (thank god!) and just have to tackle the 238409382 millionth revision of my personal statement plus the diversity statement for the CA schools. Does anyone else feel like time is moving really fast?
  11. I'm also applying this year- 19th/20th cent. architectural history. I probably won't post much but I will be lurking.
  12. I don't know where you can find these kind of statistics for Historic Preservation M.As, but just from what I've noticed the GRE is not considered very heavily. A friend of mine was accepted at an Ivy this past application season with math/verbal scores in the mid 500s.
  13. The Barrons book I bought came with two practice CAT tests on a cd. I haven't tried them yet though.
  14. Hi everyone! I'm fairly new here (been lurking quite a bit last semester, but I forgot my username- doh) and was wondering if I could get some advice/opinions. I'm going to be graduating next May from a state university with a BA in Art History and English as well as a certificate in Historic Preservation. By the time I graduate, I will have completed my honors thesis on a topic in the field of architectural history, an internship where I will be directly dealing with section 106 and national register nominations, and a leadership position in a summer field school in preservation. I feel pretty qualified to be out in the working world and have been planning on getting a job after graduation. However, after looking around at some job listings and watching several of my art history friends struggle to find a job, I'm getting more and more unsure of myself. I know that I want to go to graduate school after taking a year or two off, but if I can't find a job in my field then that year will be wasted. So, my question: due to the current state of the economy, would it be more advisable to go straight from my undergraduate to an MA in historic preservation or architectural history? I'm hoping to decide relatively soon since I know that my year is going to be very busy and I'll have ample time to get my applications in order this summer. Thanks so much for your help!
