For those of you w/o a BSW and applied to Laurier's Regular Track MSW but didn't get in, did any of you decide to pursue a BSW instead of re-apply? Did any of you decide to give up on social work altogether? Has anyone waitlisted for Laurier's Regular Track MSW (p/t online) heard back about a spot for fall? -

Laurier emailed me (last name "T") on May 17th and I got waitlisted for the Foundational MSW p/t online program for Fall 2022. I've accepted another grad program already and will be doing that. I hear you, the wait has been ridiculously long. To those who got in, a big congrats! And to those who didn't get in or got waitlisted, there are always other intakes or schools that will welcome what you bring to the table. Wishing everyone all the best! -

Haven't heard back either. The advisor said they'd be sending out notices "starting May" for the online p/t program. It's been a long wait. -

I'm sorry to hear about UT and I totally relate to that long wait for Laurier! I think it's great that you know you want to go down the social work path instead of counselling psychology. If you don't get into an MSW this term, I think it's worthwhile taking time for self-care, tending to some moving parts of your life (you mentioned looking for a job), and gaining some more relevant experience in social services. The extra work/volunteer experience is invaluable, not just for your applications, but to help you determine what population you want to work with, what your strengths are, and what you skills you need to develop. Volunteering for crisis lines is great experience (I learned so much when I did this), and there are a lot of jobs in social services that involves supporting vulnerable populations (e.g. shelters, elder care, immigrant services, addictions, youth centres etc.) where you can gain a lot of insight. I agree with others who suggest a post-degree BSW. I know someone who got into Laurier after doing a SSW diploma after their BA. The last thing you want to happen is to figure out you're too burnt out do social work while you're on your practicum. Taking time for self-care is huge b/c you'll encounter a lot of clients who are deeply struggling with their mental health and you want to be ready for that. There's never a perfect time to start school but I think you articulated it very well already, that you're in the thick of your own healing journey and you wonder what your capacity would be at this time to help others. I'll just share from personal experience that I'm glad I put off doing my Masters for several years b/c I was going through big life changes back then. I initially got into a Masters in Counselling Psych but glad I didn't do it then b/c I would've withdrawn part way through. I just got into the same Masters program this year and I'm glad I waited. Wishing you much luck on your journey!!! -

For those who are hearing back for Laurier’s 2yr MSW, are you the in-person or online program? I was told online would hear back in May but earlier would be great! -

From my experience working closely with people who hire in social services and education, I've never met an employer who gave preference to a candidate because of their school's ranking--it's not a consideration at all. Your competency, your degree of work experience, how well you communicate, and whether you're good to work with (based on your references/interview) trumps your school's ranking/reputation. As long as your program is accredited, you're a contender. E.g. I worked in a school where they hired the best counsellor for the job--she completed her Masters online from a lesser known institution and beat out many candidates from "top tier" schools. She was just awesome at what she did, period. -

I feel for your situation! It's a hard decision to pursue another bachelor's but depending on how much work experience you have in the field, getting a BSW first isn't bad because you'd get lots of field experience before doing an advanced MSW, rather than going straight into a 2 year MSW. Once you get a BSW you'd likely find work and you can pay for your own advanced MSW (if you get your permanent residency, you're eligible to purse the advanced MSW online even while working). This could lessen the financial pressure for your mom. Wishing you much luck getting into your programs! -

Unfortunately Windsor’s field placement has to be in-province (I’m in BC) and Dal’s Foundational MSW is strictly on campus. -

Can anyone relate? I have a non-BSW degree and feel frustrated that Laurier is the only Canadian university that offers a fully online Foundational MSW. The university closest to me, UBC-Vancouver, only offers an Advanced MSW. I can't uproot my family and leave my job to move out of Vancouver to pursue a Foundational MSW in another province. UBC-Vancouver no longer offers a Foundational MSW which is really perplexing as every major Canadian university seems to have a Foundational program. UFV has a Foundational MSW but it's offered every odd year (this also perplexes me) and 80km away from where I live. Work, my kids' school, and elderly parents are all in Vancouver and depend on me, and I can't commute 160km daily to UFV while trying to care for my family. I'm now looking at accredited US online Foundational MSW programs if I don't get into Laurier but it's double the cost of a Canadian MSW. Thanks for hearing me out! -
Has anyone applied to the Online MSW program (Traditional Track) at University of New Hampshire? How's the program there and does anyone know if they accept students residing outside the US for the online program?

Has anyone ever applied to or heard anything about the online MSW programs for traditional track/non-BSW students at University of New England or Yeshiva University? -

Has anyone tried to apply to the Spring 2022 intake for the part-time online MSW program (non-BSW) at WLU? The website says applications opened up on June 1, deadline is July 15th (August for supplemental docs) but when I tried to apply, the option was "closed". Did they close applications early? I know the website says they have the right close an application window without notice but this is really disappointing--it's only been 3 weeks since it opened?
