Edit to this: Michael Hofmann is coming back from Sabbatical next fall which is exciting news for newly accepted MFA applicants! I’ve heard that he’s an excellent teacher. Best of luck to you guys! The weekend is almost here!

Good news and bad. I emailed Michael Hofmann about my program status, and William Logan got back with me and said Michael Hofmann just went on sabbatical, and said that he is sorry to say that I have not been admitted to the program, and he encouraged me to apply again next year when they have more funding to accept more applicants. He was super nice, and I think they are sending out all rejections on Thursday. Good news is that if Michael Hofmann is on sabbatical, I don't feel too down about not getting accepted since he was the reason I applied. Now it's down to BU and my waitlists...no anxiety at all lol

Right?! I think I saw one poetry acceptance in a comment on a thread, but I can’t remember which one, but no waitlists for poetry...looking from past years though, they seem to send their waitlists way earlier than rejections so I’m not too hopeful...unless 2021 is just a weird year for them.

Same, checking my email every five minutes... Do we know of poetry waitlists have been sent out yet? I need to know if we can still have hope lol Also, it’s weird that they are still reviewing my transcripts after they sent out acceptances ?

Mine still says that ? yikes...did they not bother to finish viewing my app. lol another update, they told someone on draft that they are sending out poetry rejections today so I’m not sure about fiction.

Don’t collapse! A waitlist is good news no matter what. It means they really wanted to accept you, but just didn’t have enough spots. You should feel very proud ? I hope a space opens up soon so you don’t have to spend weeks in anxiety. It just says received as well...don’t know if that means anything. Have you heard of their status changing from other applicants?

Yikes...rooting for you though! A poet on draft just got a rejection notice....made my heart stop. U Florida and BU are my top choices.

I’ve had so much anxiety....getting high often is the only way I’ve been surviving the onslaught of insecurity and anxiety. Being on two waitlists makes it even worse. Being so close to going to grad school and yet so far away ?

You’re not being ungrateful at all! It’s completely understandable that you don’t want to go into debt for an MFA. A writing career is already uncertain enough without adding all the stress of taking out loans. There’s nothing wrong with trying again next year. This also was a really tough year for applications...so many applicants, less being accepted in programs, and the list goes on. I hope you get some good news from New Hampshire though! Has Maryland been in touch yet?

Just got a double rejection literally minutes apart lol University of Maryland and FSU both said no. So that leaves 0a/2w/7r/5p Honestly, for my first time applying, 2w is better than I thought I was going to do. Keeping my head up. ?

Got my official waitlist email from Hollins University!! First good news I’ve had in awhile. That leaves me on two waitlists and waiting to hear from 7 more schools! The anxiety is real!!

University of Maryland is known for their status changes meaning something. Under program review is good and under grad school review has been known to mean rejection, but I’m still not a 100% on that...it’s gossip from past accepted and rejected applicants.

I’ve just heard from past accepted people that the portal status under program review is good and under graduate school review is bad...it was under program review for weeks and then last minute changed to under graduate school review. So I’m at a loss on what’s going on. Lol

My status changed for University of Maryland to under grad school review...? it was under program review. I guess this means a rejection is coming...was really hoping to get accepted. It was definitely one of my top schools.

Don’t give up just yet. I know people who have gotten rejected from everywhere, and then got a single acceptance to Iowa or Michener. It’s not over until you get the official rejection from all places. Someone could read your work at BU or UVA (etc.), and your writing could be exactly what they are looking for, something that really floors them. I think about how I read work, and it’s a hit or miss whether something just strikes a chord within me, or I don’t care for it. It could depend on mood, place in life, or whatever. All I’m saying is to not give up yet. You just never know. I wish you all the luck in the world! The important thing to remember is to keep writing.
