Hey! I can imagine this is really stressful. I would try and spend some time offline tonight. Turn off your phone/laptop, give them to a friend/roommate. If you haven't heard anything by tomorrow, especially since rejections have come out via the portal, which is usually automated to everyone on the rejection list, then maybe you've been waitlisted?

As someone in his third cycle( really only my second since I only applied for two programs my first time around and had no idea what I was doing at first) I will say that the rejections will always sting but you should never take them too personally. Departments are fickle and sometimes it really does boil down to a matter of luck of if you get in or not. Sometimes the department is only taking one admit for the subfield you are in or sometimes the faculty you want to work with is getting ready to go on sabbatical. I think understanding that helps cope with the sting of being rejected and not being discouraged to go again if you don't get into a program your first time around! I hope that helps somewhat! -

Thank you!
Honestly, it probably helped that I was only on here that one time (for several hours, but still!) And then I told my friends and sister that I will not go on for another 2 weeks (hoorah accountability!) And what's the point of going on here if you can't cry to your friends and family that clearly you're getting rejected from X school because "THEY ALREADY ACCEPTED FIVE PEOPLE AND I DIDN'T EVEN GET AN INTERVIEW."
That's probably very oddly specific to me, so probably not helpful =P.

Hello all! I'm new here =). Stupidly decided to lurk 2-3 weeks ago, realized I was likely going to get rejected from Berkeley, and then vowed to take a few weeks off the forums so I don't drive myself crazy. I got my first acceptance yesterday, so am feeling like I can come out of the woodwork and celebrate everyone's good news! And cheer on everyone else!
My stats and background are oddly specific, so I'm more than happy to answer questions but please PM me if you do have them. I'm paranoid that professors are lurking here (as if they don't have actual research and teaching commitments to attend to, amiright?)
Anyway, all of that long preamble to say: hello! I got accepted at Princeton yesterday and a few hours later rejected from Berkeley.

Also got a rejection from Berkeley. Gotta say, getting an interview request in December with a top choice at a top school, and having the interview and being told you're in the final group only to end up with a rejection definitely hurts. Nowhere to go but up though!
Re everyone who's rejected from UCB post interview: It was the #1 ranked history graduate school this year and was very selective. If you got to the interview stage, it means you have a great application, and I bet you'll hear good things soon enough if you have a wide net cast.

Well, no better way to come down from the high of your first PhD interview than to get your first PhD rejection of the season. Only need one yes, right? ?

Hey! That was me, my subfield was medieval Europe
Columbia was a bit of a long shot for me in terms of matching with POI’s. I hope you get better news soon!

If the people who noted a Columbia rejection post-interview (so sorry to hear but at least your POI was kind enough to let you know early!) are on here, do you mind noting your sub-field?

Had a very fun (albeit very intense) interview day at Upenn for HSS. Seems like a great program, keep your fingers crossed that they see me as a good fit!

Wow congrats!!! What an achievement! Did they say whether they are accepting more than 6 students this year? Also POI = person of interest, which usually means your potential supervisor. Did you have an interview/much correspondence before they emailed you yesterday?

Thank you, trying not to get too invested in case something happens with GSAS (I don't know how common that is?)! No, they didn't give any details re cohort size unfortunately...and no interview, but we had spoken on the phone in November about my application and I also spoke with one of his current students. But that was it!

I feel silly but I don't really know what a POI is haha! But for more context: I got an email yesterday from a Prof I'd been in touch with and he gave me "tentatively good news" re acceptance but warned me it is still not concrete until GSAS approves their recommended candidates on Feb.7th. I hope that helps!

A Professor told me that the department has made their recommendations to GSAS, who - as far as he knows -will finalize admissions/do official offers on or around Feb. 7th!

Americanist. Not sure how I was categorized by Berkeley beyond that, I’m sorry. All I know for sure is that I wouldn’t be considered an early American historian. My SOP pointed to a range of both nineteenth and twentieth century interests. Wish I could be more helpful

Hi everyone, my interview with Rutgers went really well. It was just my POI asking me follow up questions about my research. No real news on whether or not I got in, but he mentioned that multiple faculty enjoyed reading my application. I appreciate the little community that this forum has become and how supportive everyone is.

hi everyone... longtime lurker, firsttime poster here. applied to berkeley and a bunch of other american schools. no emails from berkeley yet, but if people have received waitlist notifications, i'm assuming i've been rejected. congrats to everyone who's been accepted : )
