  1. Look at Washington State University's plant pathology department -- they have a great program. Maybe it's what you're looking for.
  2. One other thing to consider -- I took a practice test at home and was not thrilled with the result. I also realized I would not prepare seriously without "real" proof that I needed to, so I took the GRE last month with essentially no prep. I was pleasantly surprised to find that my real score was considerably higher than my practice score, so much so that I won't be retaking. I think I jut couldn't recreate the right testing atmosphere at home and couldn't focus enough to do my best. The same may end up being true for you.
  3. Another "ancient one" here -- going to be 42 very soon. I'm hoping to get into a genetics or bioinformatics program, but I'm geographically stuck. I don't have much research experience, and while I do have a summer internship lined up, it's only 6 weeks long (but PAID!). I will be looking for a more local research opportunity in the fall. It's a bit daunting, knowing that I'll be competing for a spot with much younger and much better positioned applicants. I try to tell myself I have a lot going for me, but I'm also trying to be realistic, and I'm prepared to try again next year if things don't work out this time around (although I'll be even OLDER then).
  4. Sounds very practical to me -- I should get some (not even a graduate student yet) -- but I am teaching part-time and someone who deals with students frequently said she'd recommend me as a tutor if I had business cards that she could hand out.
  5. I don't think taking classes you're interested in is ever pointless, and I can't imagine why it wouldn't help your application. So, if you have the time to take the class (and the money), I'd say, "Why not?" If nothing else, it might help when you actually ARE in a graduate program to have finished some required classes &/or prerequisites already.
  6. Agreed -- I think you'd be taken much more seriously as an applicant if you showed you'd made the effort of meeting most, if not all, of the prerequisites. At least I hope that strategy works, since it's the one I'll be using.
  7. I know that the Univ of Washington has an online MLIS and is a highly-ranked school. Not sure what the tuition is, but it would be easy enough to look up.
  8. I took the GRE 9 days ago and did not have any fill-in-the-blank questions. Also, I was not offered an optional section (which I would not have ben in the mood for anyway). I was not allowed to keep my watch on, so I had no idea how long I was in the testing room during the testing -- turned out it was only about 2.5 hours.
  9. I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I think you'd almost be REQUIRED to take the GRE again with that score. You ARE referring to the general GRE and not one of the subject tests? Maybe someone with more experience will have some advice for you, but I think you should try again (especially if you feel that this score does not accurately reflect your capabilities).
  10. I know -- I heard the same. But life does not always cooperate. I asked because I had the wonderful experience of getting to the last question on my GRE Q section this past weekend and realizing I did not have enough time to finish it. First reaction WAS to freeze, before my brain came back to life and tried to get my hand to click ANYTHING. Not quick enough, however, so last question went unanswered -- final score on Q = 770. So, I guess the penalty wasn't horrible.
  11. What happens if you "run out of time" at the end and leave the last 1, 2, or 3 undone? Have you tried that scenario?
