Thank you for this! It does seem to be very school-specific, which just makes it all more confusing...does anyone have any insight on Rutgers waitlist process, specifically?

From what I've been told by the DGS, Rutgers waitlist is seat-dependent rather than ranking-based -- you can get off the waitlist when the person who got accepted close to your area of specialization turns down their offer, e.g. someone who specializes in pre-modern in my case. ?

In my application year, we were actually able to track wait-list movement in our version of this thread.  Someone who was admitted to Indiana got in off a waitlist at her top choice.  Her spot at IU then went to someone who had been admitted to U of Rochester, and that person's U of R spot went to me.  We saw all of that movement happen from like April 11th-13th.  The wait is agonizing, but don't give up.  The departments are hamstrung until they hear from the people who received initial offers, and those people might be waiting on their own waitlists.  A LOT of movement happens in early April, usually.

This really reminds me of the David Attenborough documentary clip on hermit crabs trading shells. I found it has an unsettling resonance to our situation so I'm sharing it here ???

Hey all! Waitlisted at UVA, UNC Chapel    Hill, Loyola Chicago and Rutgers. @arrowseeker, Rutgers is my #1, Af. American lit focus. Wonder if there’s any chance for us in a year like this...

I'm anxious about it too. The DGS indicated there has been no medieval acceptance because of reduced cohort size this year, which makes me wonder in vain how it might have been for all of us if it weren't for the COVID ? Fingers crossed!

I'm waiting to hear from them re: Comp Lit and it's wearing on me. They (and UWMadison, tho for English) look like they notify soon. Blech. I'm not having an easy time distracting myself.

I'm waiting to hear from UW Madison too! Based on previous years' results, I suppose UW will likely send out results early this week and Northwestern the following week? Best of luck to both of us!

Hey, congratulations!! I'm sure this was well-deserved! This indeed brings some hope. If you don't mind answering, were you the person who posted on the results page?

Thank you! :) I checked the portal after seeing the results page, so I guess the person who first posted their acceptance isn't on this forum. I haven't received any emails yet though!

  6. I finished up my submission on New Year's Day and I think I've dreamt about the admission four times already. I don't know what to do with my time until February! Mainly watching Netflix, playing video games (Fallen London, anyone? I've always thought it's a great game for English majors), cooking, and the occasional Duolingo a day.

By the way, I was daunted by Brandeis English Program's last-minute cancellation of this year's admission process. Has anyone considered asking ETS for a refund for the score reports sent for those cancelled applications? I'm an international so I've sent both GRE and TOEFL scores, and considering how many schools cancelled, it amounts to quite a sum ?

Anyways, best of luck for all of you guys!

    Question about the ApplyWeb portal:

Should I be worried if my application status is marked "incomplete" on the portal, even though all materials have been received? It seems like they just never update this checklist, since the date on the checklist is still 2013...

Might it be appropriate to email the program coordinator and ask them about this?

    Hi!

I'm not sure which school you're applying to, but I'd had the same issue with my Northwestern Applyweb application and sent an email to the graduate coordinator; he told me my application was indeed complete and there was nothing to worry about.

    Hope this helps!

As far as I can remember, only places like Chicago, Columbia, Duke, Stanford, and Emory have historically conducted interviews (there might have been more, but you'll have to trawl through the respective applicants threads for the previous years to find out which ones they are). Also, do note that each program has their own rationale for selecting interviewees: Columbia and Stanford tend to interview only within select subfields, while Chicago and Duke Lit interview all their shortlisted candidates. Given the schools to which you're applying though, it seems like you don't have to worry about interviews. But in case any program decides to introduce it as part of their admissions process this year, just make sure that you're still familiar with your work (and especially your application materials) come Jan/Feb.

Thanks for the answer and suggestion!

  9. Hi all,

I am an international student applying for English PhD programs, and my top schools include Northwestern, Texas at Austin, Wisconsin-Madison, and Rutgers.

My academic advisor has told me that selective schools tend to propose an interview for their applicants, especially for internationals, and now I'm wondering whether a lack of interview proposal by late January would mean an implied rejection and whether I should prepare for my (potential) interview in advance. I guess the graduate application process and the waiting is making me nervous over everything ? I would really appreciate it if anyone can shed light on this matter.

    Thanks in advance!

  10. Hi! This is my first posting on Gradcafe. This site has been a tremendous help for me to prepare for my application, so I want to first thank you guys for that :)

I'm an international student applying for English PhD program for Fall 2021, and I know it's late to ask this, but I was wondering how specific my research interests should be in my SOP.

In my 500-words SOP, I stated my area of interest and topics I would like to further explore by asking multiple questions I want to address in my PhD (which I think are a good fit with the faculty of the school I'm applying to), but no specific texts. While others who'd proofread my SOP have told me they think it's pretty competitive, my MA thesis advisor is telling me my research interests should be much more detailed, almost like a thesis proposal for a dissertation. I'm afraid it means I'll have to write the SOP all over again to fit the word limit at this stage of the application, and now I'm worrying over whether to write my research interests anew as my advisor said.

Can anyone give me their opinion on the matter? + I'd really appreciate anyone who'll proofread my SOP.

    Thanks!
