I had 3 pubs in submission (2nd, 3rd, and 7th):
1 immuno-oncology literature review (2nd)
1 immuno-oncology original research (3rd)
1 neuroscience biophysics original research (7th)
No posters.
No formal research presentations (i.e. at a conference).
I started my lab position right at the beginning of COVID unfortunately.
I did reach out to multiple UCSF PIs beforehand. I set up Zoom calls with 2 before applications were due. I felt the first went better than the second (was too nervous). One told me to take a bioinformatics/data science course on Coursera to strengthen my application which I did and I think it helped.
Domestic/American. Born and raised in San Francisco, went to university in San Diego.
Thank you,
yeah the email did seem generic (received 8:34AM).
Perhaps with 1.5-2x as many applicants this year, they will interview more people than usual. I was not expecting an interview at all especially this early (last year they were sent on Dec. 20th) given my lack of lab experience (only 6-7mo full time in a cancer lab, not neuro; started the end of my senior year early 2020). But I'm extremely greatful for the opportunity even if it doesn't work out in the end.
Good luck with the rest of your applications!
Historically, at least for the UCs, I think interviews/first round rejections were announced Dec. 20th-31st. Then, interviews happened in February and within a few days, acceptances and second round rejections were announced.

Thanks for the solid info,
I wonder how they're still able to maintain the normal number of openings despite the potential impact of covid on funding/new openings (i.e. less current students leaving the program due to covid stalling research progress).
so....
does anyone have info about whether there will be less incoming openings in the UC neurograd programs due to fewer current students leaving than usual? Wondering if this application cycle will be more competitive due to covid funding and space constraints.
