  1. For those of us accepted in the US round, when do you think is the earliest we can expect details on the financial package? I'm trying to make arrangements as early as possible.
  2. That would be news to me, but if correct it's likely a funding issue. Also, be patient with responses, we've been dealing with a disaster for the last week and a lot of people are still recovering from burst water pipes, etc.
  3. I got shut out of PhD programs two years ago. I did a funded MA and now I have 4 offers, 0 rejections, and 8 still pending. It's very doable.
  4. Accepted to both UW-Madison and WashU., St. Louis (PNP track). Both fully funded.
  5. Well, this is partially true from my perspective. I applied to 15 PhD programs most of which are in the top 10-20 PGR with good fit for my interests. However, I did apply to a few lower-ranked programs and even one unranked program that fit my interests especially well. If it weren't for the current circumstances I might not have applied to these places. Since I already have an offer from one of my top 2 choices in terms of overall fit I will likely be withdrawing my applications from these lower ranked programs. On a tangentially related note, I'm increasingly of the mind that we should put far less emphasis on overall rankings as a discipline. The only rankings we should be paying attention to are perhaps specialty breakdowns. Unfortunately, I don't think the emphasis on rankings is going anywhere, unless we as a discipline find some practical means of filtering out prestige bias in hiring practices.
  6. Offered the Gates Cambridge Scholarship as of 1/21 (I was admitted to the PhD program at Cambridge HPS back in November). This is one of my top choices, so I intend to withdraw a number of my other applications.
  7. I also received an offer this morning! Arts panel! I'm ecstatic!!
  8. Thanks! I'll definitely keep this in mind. Yep!
  9. Interestingly enough, my primary research mentor where I'm currently doing a funded MA is one of the top scholars in the field. Many places that are strong in cognitive science or philosophy of science have some folks working on machine learning or have resources for doing interdisciplinary study in philosophy, neuroscience, and CS. There are hubs of scholars working on this stuff in Australia (mainly ANU), the UK, and Europe, but I'm mainly applying to American programs that have the aforementioned strengths like Pitt, UC Irvine, UCSD, NYU, Stanford, CMU, etc.
  10. I'm extremely confident in my sample, but I think it may be a bit of an outlier. It's very specialized (philosophy of machine learning), which limits the number of places I can send it to a bit. However, I've received an R&R from my first choice journal and I already have an offer from Cambridge HPS so I am feeling like I'm justified in applying to just a handful of elite places that have faculty who can support my research interests.
  11. Same here!
  12. Congrats! I'm in at Hughes Hall.
  13. I received my official offer letter from the PAO on November 23rd and was notified of college acceptance November 30th.
  14. I would count myself in that category, but that's partially because my specific research interests (philosophy of machine learning, cognitive neuroscience, and philosophy of AI in general) are well represented in private industry and various think tanks. I'm considering accepting an offer from a slightly lower PGR ranked school (Cambridge HPS) because their direct ties to industry research seems like it might offer better job prospects compared to the chance of landing a TT job with a PhD from even the very top ranked programs.
  15. Recent updates to the website seem to suggest that there won't be interviews this year. It's been removed from the timeline and the following note appears on the "How we select" page: "**Please note that for the 2020-2021 admissions process, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, we will not be conducting any in person interviews and our selection panels will make a paper review of nominated candidates for the 2021 class.**"
