    Hi everyone!

I know it's real late but noticed that Epi program at Pittsburgh has a deadline till April 1st, so I'm considering to apply by the end of this weekend. Does anyone know how long the personal statement should be for the PhD program? Tried to find the info on SOPHAS and the university website but seems like they don't have a specific word limit?

I was admitted and my SOP was ~900 words, 3-pages double spaced.

In one of their email, it says "Typically, we are able to offer funding support to about one-half of those interested in our program." :(

    more details ---

Funding for doctoral study is the number one question that accepted applicants have.  Funding support for doctoral students in our department works through the Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) mechanism.  The GSR is a university mechanism that provides a stipend, insurance, and tuition remission to a student in exchange for that student spending 20 hours per week working on a research project.  All GSR positions are considered on a one-year basis (i.e. a funding support commitment for one year, with extensions granted on the basis of performance during the year).

    Hope that helps!

Thanks! I got that email, too. I know they mentioned we'll know more in the "coming weeks" (several weeks ago lol), but I just wish we had an idea of when we may know. It's almost March, so it has to be soon.....hopefully....

    I haven't heard anything. ?

Ugh me neither......I'm growing impatient. It's my top choice. I have other funded offers that want a response in March and I'm nervous that they may not let us know before then. I don't want to accept elsewhere without knowing Pitt's funding situation.

As of now, I'm out at Penn, Pitt, and Emory. All PhDs.

Still no invites for interviews. Now I'm convinced I'm never getting out of my dead end job or advancing in the world.

    Still waiting for:

DrPH: BUSPH, Harvard, Columbia, Hopkins, GW, Penn State

PhD: Brown, Northeastern, UMass, UMd, UNC, Tulane, Temple, Drexel, Rutgers

My brother died by suicide at 32 years old Nov 16. I have to try and pick up the pieces. This whole thing is a mess. I regret even trying.

Hi! I also applied to the DrPH program at Penn State College of Medicine.

I can tell you that currently, all applications are being reviewed! They did have an uptick in applications this year (as did almost all programs). I'd say expect to hear sometime during mid to late Feb. You are still in the running!

Keep your head up. This process is grueling and emotionally exhausting, but it all works out in the end!

  5. Accepted to the University of Pittsburgh PhD degree program in Epidemiology! I'll include my stats below. Does anyone when we find out about funding?

Currently finishing my MPH (Epidemiology & Biostatistics track)

    Undergrad GPA - 3.66

    MPH GPA - 3.99

3 published articles, 1 first author. One cited by the CDC

1 poster presentation at a large, annual infectious disease conference

4 years of research experience in undergrad, internship at state department of health, currently working as a full-time project coordinator for a federally funded research program.

LOR from chair of public health sciences at my institution (my advisor), associate director of the MPH program, epidemiologist (a coauthor), vice chair of research (boss).

    Background:

Epi track. Fresh postgraduate students in Peking University, China. Strong academic research and quantitative background. Published 5 original articles in journals including Nature and JAMA series, and Neurology as independent first author and total impact factor is over 50 in the past year (Average: 10). National second prize in data analysis championship held by SAS Inc.

    Current situation:

US: Received an invitation to PhD recruitment day on Jan 22 from Brown U just a few days ago. Accepted by Pittsburgh U without interview.

UK: Interviewed with PI in Oxford (Population health). Genetic Epi & Biostatistics (Publications in NEJM, lancet, JAMA and BMJ). Very positive interaction.

Europe: Karolinska Institute, oral offer. The team has a number of publications in Lancet and JAMA. A very competent lab.

Still waiting for an interview chance from Harvard. I do the best I can in research, but I am uncertain about how much chance I have. I noticed that many fellows have finished the interviews for population health science PhD program with faculty in Harvard. I have contacted two professors by mail, one of which said my CV is quite strong and he is willing to be my advisor. Anyway, I will go to Oxford if I can't make it. I am research-oriented and really do not care about the rankings of school. Actually, not all professors in top tier colleges have a good record of publications. Of course, not everyone dose a PhD for the sake of publication and scientific discovery. I am just talking about my personal understanding.

I am happy to discuss anything related to the application at this moment. Good luck to everyone.

Congrats! If I may ask, when did you apply to Pitt? Trying to gauge when I may hear back.

Hi all! Just wanted to chime in and say that I have applied to Harvard, UNC, Yale, BU, Pitt, and Drexel (PhD in Epidemiology).  I was accepted to Pitt on Dec. 4, no news from any of the other programs so far.

    Congrats on Pitt!

If I may ask, when did you submit your application? Trying to gauge when I may hear back lol. It's my top choice and I am eager to hear something!

I was accepted to University of Pittsburgh last week and UT Health this week for PhD in Epi.

Congrats...that's amazing! Pitt is one of my top choices.

If I may ask, when did you submit your application to Pitt? Do you also mind including your stats? Thank you!
