Hi there, I'm going to UIowa this fall too as a grad student. Should we start a group chat for those who are going to UI? It would be great for finding roommate and sharing experience and stuff

I already found an apartment but I'm down to join a chat!

Gosh really!? Thanks for letting me know. I should probably go in person then. Can I DM you for some other questions?

Yes of course, feel free to DM me whenever!

Great to see a fellow grad student! Congrats to you PhD acceptance!

I'm looking for apartments like crazy as well. Idk if you have found some Reddit posts about UIowa and Iowa City, but just in case, there are some that maybe helpful to you:

And there are many more if you scan through the r/uiowa and r/IowaCity subreddits.

Feel free to PM me if you want to chat further!

Thanks so much for sending! I ended up finding a great place but it took EFFORT. I went in person to do apartment tours and thank god I did because 50% of them were not the same as the photos in the listing.

Maybe I'll see you around, good luck to you as well!

Just wanna bring back the thread.

I'm an international student newly accepted into UIowa and looking forward to learn more about the Iowa City area.

I have so many questions. But to start, what are your views on UIowa's Aspire at West Campus as a place to live for grad students?

    Thanks!

Hi!! I'm not from Iowa either (from Michigan but have lived in CA for a long time) but wanted to say Hi since I'm also starting at U Iowa this fall!

I don't really have anything to add but I have been scouring apartments religiously and it seems like Aspire is nice in that it's new, modern, and convenient (bus shuttles, car parking, animal friendly) but that it's overpriced in terms of square footage. But also I'm not from there so this is just what I've read online!

Has anybody heard from SDSU/UCSD's joint program post interview? I saw one accepted post, but it was so soon after the interview days that I'm not sure if it means all offers have gone out (maybe just wishful thinking). I'm trying to wait a little longer before bothering my PI since it was only last week.

I was told from my PI that all offers went out last week. That doesn’t mean you’re not on the waitlist though so keep the faith!

Hi everyone! I received an invitation to interview for the University of Southern Mississippi clinical program, but haven't heard anything about the interview schedule yet. Is anyone else in the same boat? I'm meant to be interviewing on February 12th but I know there are a couple other interview days too

I have not gotten mine yet either but my interview is not on the 12th. I hate when they send them out so late!

I have no special expertise, but after a recent interview, I only sent thank you emails to my PI and her current grad student who I had a pretty in-depth conversation with (but not to other faculty or grad students from other labs). I had read suggestions that you should send thank you notes to everyone, but in my case it felt like too much — even like it might be annoying or come off like I'm just doing it to improve my chances or something. I mentioned in my note to the PI that I had really enjoyed my conversations with other faculty (which was true!).

That said, I don't think it would hurt you to send a short thank-you email to everyone if that feels natural to you.

Thanks!! I was leaning towards that (I met with so many people that it might come across weird if I did people in other labs as well) but I think I'll just send it to the grad students in his lab plus the PI.

Based on the advice of a professor in a clinical psych program, it is a good idea to send thank you emails to the grad students and other faculty you met with in addition to your poi.

Good to know this is what other people are doing, thank you both!!

  8. After an interview, are you guys sending thank you emails to everyone you met with (all the grad students in the lab you met, other random pis you met, AND your pi)? Or are you just sending it to the PI?
I don’t know how these things work and don’t want to seem insane for sending everyone an email but also don’t want to be rude if most people do that.

  9. I know it's common knowledge, but for all the current RAs getting into school this year their positions will be open probably sometime around May. I would look hard during that time at the different schools you want to work in (this is of course assuming you're willing/able to move).

In my lab if we get in (fingers crossed) we will have 3 full-time RA positions for a couple R01 studies - so keep an eye out now for which labs you may want to work in!

I have an interview next week for an RA position in a nearby lab, in which I would help with recruitment for clinical drug trials. I'm not interested in psychopharmacology (it's the reason I never considered med school), so I'm wondering if a Clinical Psych PI would view experience with med trials differently than a position that is purely academic. The position is at a well-respected institution and receives government funding, so it's not with "big pharma." I know this will vary from person to person, depending on my interests and theirs. Does it even matter? Am I just overthinking this? I don't want to commit to a contracted position that won't provide the professional development I'm looking for.

My first "in" to research was a CRC in clinical psychopharmaceutic trials (with big Pharma) and now I currently work as a RA in a university lab with non-clinical trials. I learned a ton in the clinical trial job, but there are some very big differences. For the clinical trials - you have a lot more exposure to different populations. We worked with PTSD, MCI, MDD, Schizophrenia, BD, chronic migraines, etc. basically it was a wider net of exposure than a lab only working on a few studies - likely all with the same population. I also had a wide exposure to different clinical assessments because of this. HOWEVER because clinical trials are super strict with who can do what, I wasn't able to administer 90% of the scales with only a BA and my job was actually to just coordinate who does what when and where.

I also got more experience in different skills (taking blood pressure, blood slides and centrifuging, doing EKGs) but the biggest downside is you collect the data, enter it into their database and never see it again. There is basically no work to be done on creating, managing, cleaning, analyzing a dataset or for any of the other assessments. I also wasn't able to contribute to any posters/papers during this time since big Pharma doesn't let you see the data (understandably?).

All in all, if you are having trouble finding a university RA job I think it would be fine to do, but for me it did feel like a long "intro to research" type of job and I was already several years out of undergrad at that point and didn't want to waste more time. I think they are good jobs and definitely won't HURT your chances but honestly I think my current lab experience heavily outweighs the prior experience. BUT I have friends who worked alongside me in clinical trials who are now in Counseling PhD programs so in any place it depends on the actual lab and what you are willing to get out of it.

Also this was just my experience and I know other clinical trials are done WITHIN university labs too so this may be different than this job!

"I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but yes – invitations for interview day have been extended. I know that is not the news that you want to hear. I know how extremely nerve-racking this application process can be. I remember your application quite well and rated it very well. I thought that you were very prepared for a PhD program. I am sure that others will see that too. I remember that our interests significantly overlapped and that you have a history of community interventions. I thought that was very neat. I ultimately extended invitations to three other candidates. I know this won’t be much of a consolation, but the competition this year was very tough. We had many stellar applicants. In fact, I had over 85 applicants (including yourself) apply to work with me. You were towards the top of the list.

U of South Carolina invites have been extended in case anyone was still wondering

Sorry to hear this :(. I think I also applied to this PI and just want to say, and I know this gets repeated over and over, but that getting rejected doesn't say anything about us or our abilities. Sometimes its funding, sometimes it's match, sometimes it's because we don't have a specific skill they are looking for but we WILL find someone eventually who sees our potential!

I believe in all of us here and we'll get there even if it's not on the timeline we had originally imagined.

Hello! If anyone has heard from the University of South Carolina, is there a formal interview date?

I haven't heard anything and I applied as well! I haven't even seen any official interviews posted anywhere (here, reddit, etc.) so I'm not sure if they did it sneakily or just really late to the party?

    Hope it's the latter!

Do you have Zoom meetings for that program all day? I would honestly reach out to whoever and ask about flexibility. Chances are, they probably didn't realize that you are in a different time zone.

I appreciate the advice! I would hate to be difficult though just because it's earlier than my usual wake up time. It'll be okay, I have a lot of sympathy for all the international applicants having to do zooms at 2-3am their time!

I noticed this, too! I'm a historically terrible sleeper and total night owl as a result, so I am not stoked about this. It will be barely dawn when I get up too, I seriously hope they don't thrown the most intensive stuff at us first. If I have to do my PI interview first thing, I'll be doomed. ? (Also I really hope they give us a proper lunch/Zoom break...) I plan on trying to get up a bit earlier the days leading up to it so my body can adjust.

Same! I am hoping it'll be the introduction to the school in the morning but this is my first year applying so I have no idea how these things work. That's a great idea though, I should try to adjust my schedule so I don't look unenthusiastic about the interview, haha!

  16. This is probably just me complaining but has anyone else on the west coast noticed that these interview times are not made for us? I have a zoom official interview scheduled to start at 6:00am my time! Yikes. I feel like this has never happened before since things have never been Zoom but are there any tips or anyone who wants to commiserate on how likely sleepy/non-A game we will be?

Guess I'll be waking up at 5am to sit there and have the Zoom meeting catch the sunrise.
