Fall 2021 Clinical & Counseling PhD/PsyD
NotYourMothersGrad replied to clinicalpsych.2022's topic in Psychology Forum
That is super interesting and not like my experience at all! So thanks for sharing. It most likely is the places I'm applying to, but seeing as the norm is to apply to PIs and not schools, I figured it would average out despite being schools with majority white undergrads. I come from a HACU and seeing white people throughout the applicants and departments for most places has been very odd to me. -

On the note of competitiveness, diversity, and disadvantages - have any of you who have interviewed noticed just how many white applicants and white grad students there are in the labs you're applying to? I know whiteness doesn't = inherent advantages 100% of the time, but it feels very weird to me the faculty, current grad, and applicant racial and diversity background that still seems homogenous.. -

I'm not sure it would hurt? But I'm personally against asking those sort of updates unless you're stuck between dates or something. To me, asking about your place in the review process doesn't make it go any faster....other than to maybe recieve an official rejection early? That's just me though. -

I'd imagine GSU aren't sending out more invites. We had a mass invite email that wanted our confirmation between two dates, and the deadline to respond to that email was the 22nd. So they're most likely getting everything together now that they know who is attending when. -

There isn't from what I know. I spoke with someone from the grad office back in December asking and she said they have to manually tell the system to ignore the lack of scores, or something. I assumed she did that and didn't check again, only now realizing that status hasn't changed so now I'm worried ? -

Is there anyone here that applied to Idaho, ISU who didn't submit GRE scores? Was wondering if your application checklist still says "materials needed" because of "awaiting test scores". I'm not sure they've sent out apps yet but that kind of stuff makes me nervous my app never went through to review. -

I'm not sure you can really anticipate this unless you're asking about a specific PI or program and ask a current grad student there....I do get the anxiety though and I thought this video was incredibly helpful: Including pt. 2 which I haven't linked. If you have good answers that feel natural, not too rehearsed for all of these, it will be easy to sail through those more difficult/unanticipated questions. I'll also say that everyone who has an interview needs to take advantage of their virtual buddies and the virtual videos and tours that explain the program. They can really help you identify your fit with the program and help you formulate your answers when asked why you like the program, PI, etc. Edit: I'll add that the most annoying question I got was "Why don't you have any publications?" because what sort of answer could make you happy....like it's not my fault none of my undergrad PIs like to publish? -

I saw some people asking about GSU - I received both my PI and official invite almost a week ago. Wanted to post so people have some peace of mind! -

Can anyone provide any advice for group virtual interviews? The DCT at one of the schools I am applying to has a 30-minute group virtual interview, which is something I would expect in an MA program but not a PhD, so I have no idea what sort of questions will be asked or what there will even be time for! 30 minutes goes by quick even just 1:1. -

Why do people post the incorrect interview dates for programs ??♀️ like I got the same email buddy and the interview sure isn't on that day! Even on the invites thread, not just the results page. -

You are definitely not alone in this. I was a D, C, B student in high school and reviewing the GRE felt like a nightmare trying to learn basic math concepts for the first time. The test is a detriment to many people, including ESL students. -

I would argue that the fact I have no publications is a huge knock on my application but I was able to recieve interviews. I know that's a huge barrier for many students especially coming from schools with faculty that don't push for publications. And with the other poster, not having the GRE saved my butt. I have a 4.0 GPA for both grad and undergrad but my GRE score was a terrible 300 (148 Q 151 V). Edit: I think it says enough about me that I can't add 148 + 151 correctly -

Not typically, I'd assume the number difference is because at most schools, half the faculty won't be taking new students and it varies every year. -

I agree, and looking back on just how much work and stress and effort I've put into my college education, knowing that everything I do and every opportunity I take, every bit of research experience and every grade all matters for this moment right now.....it's almost unhealthy to be honest. I think there's a lot of us here that feel exhausted getting to this point because it's years and years in the making sometimes. And in the end, it might not even matter! What does my 4.0 mean compared to the next person's 4.0? Or the other 20 people with 4.0s and years of research experience? etc. etc. etc. Unfortunately it really comes down to luck, fit, and match with PI when you've got such good stats. Which is frustrating because we judge ourselves, asking if we could have done more to get interviews and acceptances, but sometimes it's not that simple. Even having gotten an interview this cycle, I'm still asking myself why the other 9 programs didn't choose me for an interview ? -

Because previous posting have shown they send out their invites by the 3rd or very early Jan. I've only seen one person post their invite (Dec. 17th) so maybe they haven't sent out their invites yet, but that's why it's an assumption! -

They usually let you know you're waitlisted directly. I had one interview invite and two waitlistings last year, one came from the PI directly and the other was a mass waitlist email. -

I'm pretty sure this doesn't change until you're accepted and admitted, or possibly rejected. Sometimes mass rejection emails mention going to your application portal to see the rejection. I don't think it's ever changed for me, interview or not, when I'm going through the process. Schools really should have a better way of confirming your application actually made it to the department though, so I understand your anxiousness. Some of my schools clearly state they were sent to the department for review and a few others don't even bother. -

To answer some of your question, PI and POI should both mean person of interest, aka. Faculty of interest/faculty whose lab they specifically applied to. You would go to the results section (top of the page) of GradCafe to post your results (there should be something to click above the page), but there is a forum thread, stickied to the psychology section of the forum, where people are sharing where and when they have interviews.
