  1. Hey keymash, congratulations on ur USC acceptance!! I've applied to the NYU MCC program as well. The last I heard from the grad coordinator Mary was around mid-Jan and she said accepted applicants will be called, waitlisted will be emailed and the rest will get letters via post. There is only one acceptance on the results board dated Friday. I hope they make some more calls or emails today...
  2. You are not alone.. These stupid UT-Austin emails refuse to stop. How many times will you bloody reject me! Brutal.
  3. Hey all, I've been accepted into a media studies PhD. Am yet to take a decision but a professor from a safe school whose work i really like has emailed, asking for questions. While my primary concern is the lack of film component in their syllabus and the figure of stipend, should I mention it in my interactions? or should I simply shoot idle questions about the prof's own research.. Appreciate any suggestions..
  4. The grad coordinator mentioned that the accepted candidates will be notified via phone by late Feb. Now that it's about time, I'm quite anxious. In the meantime, it would be nice to know the criteria for decisions at NYU. As an international student, i don't know much about the institute except its good reputation (i'm sure many will say that's overrated). So what's more important for NYU - GRE scores or good recos? Also, is it lenient with funding? Would love to hear experiences of any current or former NYU students. Thx!
  5. Hi all, So I did have my interview and like most of the people pointed out here, it was mostly a get-me-familiar-with-Colorado talk. I guess the professor wanted to tell me the pluses since I wouldnt be able to visit the place before the term starts. However, he did sneak in a question here and there about why I wanted to do a PhD and my film interests. Overall, it was very reassuring with the prof offering to even pay for my tickets to Colorado in August!! Thank you everybody for all the suggestions. It really helped get over some of the anxiousness and prepare for the unknown...
  6. You have a point there. I have been offered an assistantship position. Also, Indian English can be atrocious at times, so i dont blame the profs. Besides, I've always wondered how universities accept international students without checking whether it was actually them who wrote the SOPs and writing samples. Thx for brainstorming and good luck for your visit!
  7. Thanks newms Yes, this prof is a potential advisor. Like you, I'm starting to think this may be the getting to know you interview. Still, I'll make sure I'm armed with all info on everything Interviews make me nervous, but don't mind the part about convincing to come to Boulder
  8. journalism and mass communication
  9. Few days ago, I received an email from Colorado, Boulder stating I had been accepted to the PhD Programme. Now, I have a skype interaction scheduled with the professor who sent that email. I have not yet accepted the offer, but have no clue what the talk will be about. Does any one know what could possibly be asked? Should I just read my SOP and CV again and be thorough about my research interests?
  10. I received a response from UCSB today to expect a decision "no later than the first week of March." I'd say it's safe to assume we've been waitlisted.
  11. I think ur right. Two accepted candidates on this forum. It's ridiculous to wait so long..
  12. anyone applied to colorado boulder?
  13. Received an email from the grad coordinator at UCSB. Apparently, they've informed all the people who're rejected this yr. 'College is waiting for some pending financial info to make offers'. So if u havn't been notified, stay hopeful. (goosebumps)!!
  14. The results section shows only rejects. Sucks..
  15. Anyone heard from UCSB? There's one rejection in the results section. No response from grad coordinator, result unavailable on website :|
  16. Thank you three wishes left. I had been going crazy looking for the not-so-good colleges. Besides, the waiting period is soooooo agonisingly long. Anyone heard from any of the colleges? UCSB says they will finish their review and inform by the end of this month, which is by far the earliest. All the rest are set to complete the process by Feb end-early March.
  17. Hi there, Does anyone know of film and media programs with Jan deadlines? I've applied to USC (cinematic arts), NYU steinhardt, Ut-Austin and UCSB. But all of these are top colleges and I am looking for 'safety nets'. Any help will be appreciated.
  18. Hi all, It's crunch time. After a lot of thinking and rethinking, this is what it has boiled down to. Has anyone else made up their mind yet? I'm applying to PhD courses in mass comm/film and media studies. Feel free to share any thoughts or suggestions. THE list... NYU STEINHARDT COLORADO BOULDER USC UT-AUSTIN U MICHIGAN U IOWA UCSB INDIANA-BLOOMINGTON HOWARD
  19. Hi squash_3in, I've been continuously seeking answers to these questions by interacting with profs and PhD students. Like they say frequently in this forum, you never really know until your application is rejected or accepted. So, i'm keeping my fingers crossed and taking the plunge for PhD. At this point, I dont want to do another master's course. There are some good film and media studies courses, which should give me the best of both worlds. Yes, my writing sample is about the Indian cinema. What are your research interests..
  20. I would also recommend the Barrons essential words for Verbal.. It has sentences along with words which is very helpful. I gave my test in Aug 25 and most words were from Barrons..
  21. Thanks skiergirl. My research involves exploring the dynamics of films and censorship. I have 4 years' experience in journalism. How does that score vis-a-vis teaching exp? Where are you applying?
  22. Thanks for the tip! I've decided to work on my writing sample and SOP rather than giving GRE again.. Hopefully it will work out..
  23. My score is 1200, 680 V and 510 M (i suck at math). Can anyone suggest colleges I can apply to with this score. Should I give the test again and aim for 1300+ ?
  24. Hi there, I am a journalist in India with 4 years' experience. Completed my masters in development communication in India and have a bachelors degree in commerce (accounting). I have an inclination towards film history, criticism and research, with Bollywood (Indian film industry) as a primary focus. Finally zeroed in on the subject for my PhD research which is film censorship. Was thinking of applying to cinema studies departments earlier. But considering my background (with no MFA degree) it seems I should aim for critical studies or rhetoric. Also, I've seen developmental studies departments in some schools like Wisconsin-Madison. Is it a reputed school? what are the career prospects of passing out from it? That college has some Indian profs doing similar research, which may improve my chances of getting in. What other schools/departments can I apply to? Does anyone know profs working on similar studies.. I'll be giving my GRE next month. Lotsa work to do Anyone else aiming for PhD in films in 2011? Hows the prep coming along.
