  1. well, after an application cycle last year with no fully funded offers, I thought I was going to have to give up on my Classics dreams and pursue a different career path. So I did that, but I still threw one last hail mary and applied to a single program this year. They accepted me, but weren't able to offer funding, so I declined the offer and was resigned to not applying again. But late Friday night, I got an email offering me full funding that PhD program that previously couldn't fund me! Was it a total shift to all the plans I'd made? Yes. But am I thrilled? Also yes. I'm getting a PhD!!!
  2. Hello all! With only applying to 1 PhD this year and instead shifting my post-grad expectations to law school, I've been very absent from this forum this year. But I'm curious if anyone has heard anything from SUNY Buffalo? Last year they sent me an email saying "thanks, we've got all your application materials" and this year I didn't get that. It didn't look like they were requiring GRE scores, so I didn't submit mine, but that could have been a fatal mistake on my part. This was about the time I heard back from them last year, so I'm starting to get anxious. Any info anyone has would be greatly appreciated! Thanks and good luck to everyone!
  3. So I was accepted to a PhD program during the last cycle, but due to Covid, they weren't able to offer me funding. I turned down the offer, hoping to reapply and gain funding. I've been able to gain some research experience, and I'm spending my gap year to better my application. Of course I'm going to reach out to the program to ask after their funding situation as it compares to last cycle, but my question is, would I be looked down upon or would my application be more harshly judged because I previously turned down an offer of admission? Any insight you have would be greatly appreciated!
  4. Hi! Much like ClassicsCandidate, I'm back again with a new list of schools! I'm currently considering if I should reapply to any of the programs I was accepted to last cycle (accepted but no funding, so couldn't enroll, sadly) but any input anyone has on the subject would be greatly appreciated! My firm list of schools this consists of: University of Wyoming (history, MA), UToronto (Classics, MA), Arizona (Classics, MA), and UT Austin (Classics, PhD)
  5. So I reached out to UBC since they're the last school I'm waiting to hear from and they said that they won't be able to tell me my status until next week at the earliest. Clearly I'm on some kind of waitlist, but why can't they just say that!?! It's killing me!
  6. That's a big bummer, I'm sorry! But yeah, that's sort of been everywhere in my experience. Just a rough cycle for everyone.
  7. So...anyone want to claim that UBC rejection? It's the last school I'm waiting on and now that there's been a posted acceptance and rejection, my anxiety is through the roof haha
  8. I can't speak to the prestige of either program, but I can tell you that Boulder has an exorbitant cost of living.
  9. Well, just now was informed I got into Brandeis' MA program. Got some funding, so that's a win! But unfortunately not nearly enough funding, so that's a bummer.
  10. I did the summer intensive at the University College Cork in 2019! It was really affordable, even considering the overseas flights and lodgings for the summer. I think they're doing it online this year, so time zones might be tough if you're in North America, but it was a fantastic program and I learned so much! I went in with no ancient language knowledge and did totally fine, and people with a Latin background had no issues. We spent the first 6 weeks working on building grammar and vocab, and we spent the last 2 weeks reading Lysias' speeches.
  11. Thank you!! As far as I can tell, they usually fund 3-4 students, (I'm not sure what a typical accepted cohort size is). On the website it says that they are limited in funding this year because of covid. I'm hopeful that maybe even if I don't get funding for my first year, I can get it for 2 and beyond. I'm going in straight from BA, so we'll see. I plan to call them Monday and get more info, so I'll update when I have more info!
  12. I was accepted to the University at Buffalo PhD program! As of this moment, they said no funding is available, but that should that change, they would be back in touch. So fingers crossed it does change haha!
  13. Agreed! It just makes the rejection that much worse, in my experience and opinion
  14. So sorry to hear! but hopefully you'll get in elsewhere and who knows, maybe you'll make it through the waitlist!
  15. Hey guys! As we start to hear back from places I'm starting to worry that maybe I didn't put in enough applications (6, so far). So I'm wondering if anyone knows of any programs, MA or PhD, that are still taking applications and that are offering funding. Thanks!
  16. The letter said that they'd sent separate emails to those with funding offers or waitlist funding offers and if you didn't get one of those it's unlikely that they'll have funding for you ?
  17. Accepted to Boulder! Unfortunately, no offer of funding, so I probably won't be attending
  18. That moment when your application portal checklist just disappears and all that's left is confirmation of submission and payment. I'm not freaking out, I'm totally cool ?
  19. Congrats! I applied to Boulder but I haven't heard anything yet. Now I'm so nervous to hear back haha but fingers crossed! and again, congrats!
  20. we're all impatient and wanting updates, so I thought I'd let you guys know that my app at UBC has changed from 'submitted' to 'in progress', so it looks like they've started the review process!! Fingers crossed!
  21. Update: had the interview. It was definitely more a space for me to ask questions, but it was very low key and the faculty I spoke with were incredibly kind. I'd be thrilled to be accepted. However, the vibe was that I should apply for the MA program (not funded :/) to boost my application and try for the PhD after that. They also said program numbers haven't changed because of COVID but they have gotten more applicants this year. Should hear back in Feb/March. Anticipating a rejection, but fingers crossed!
  22. It makes me sort of wonder if there are actually less applicants this year than in other years
  23. So I'm not sure if this is an actual interview or like more of a pre-interview situation, but I was contacted by a professor I'd chatted with a bit over the summer for a zoom meeting. He included another faculty member whom I'd mentioned in my SOP and we're meeting next week. I'm obviously just nervous and would love some advice or some clarification or basically just anything you have to say.
  24. On the results page it looks like someone got an interview, so hopefully you'll hear something soon! Same with Chicago
  25. Has anyone had their application status change? All of mine still just say 'submitted' and I know it's early in the process but I'm anxious to hear SOMETHING
