  1. Agree. My lone acceptance last year was from a public ivy on the East coast. But still close to no funding for international students.
  2. Hi! I had to contact the the department to clarify something about my transcript and part of the director's reply was that they will let us know of the results "around mid-March." For FSU, I got the info from one of their Q&A sessions. Hope that helps! Edited to say I applied to the extremely competitive PhD program in UNLV where they only get two students lol. But I think the timeline for their MFA is the same.
  3. Wish I researched deep enough to know this before applying. But my mom lives in CA and she wants me to stay with her that's why I applied. Oh well..
  4. If anyone's waiting on UNLV, Doug Unger said results will be out mid-March. For FSU, Mark Winegardner said end of Feb. Good luck to us all!
  5. Just wanted to share that I looked at statistics/demographics of UC enrollees here: https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/fall-enrollment-glance and found that across all campuses, they only have one graduate student from my country for arts and humanities in the last five years. Of course, I don't know how many actually apply each year or how many were accepted yet couldn't push through because of lack of funding, other factors, etc. but my odds are not looking good. No wonder I was shut out last year from three UCs. There goes my $685 of app fees ? Hope this Tuesday is better for y'all. I have a feeling more results will come in this week. As they say in Korean dramas I love, FIGHTING!
  6. I, too, have a 5-year old boy who loves slides and indoor playgrounds (which all have closed where I'm from because of Covid). Really hoping I could get into a program there and bring him with me as dependent. Fingers crossed for all of us. February (the second-cruelest month) is almost upon us!
  7. I know based on a colleague's experience last year that they only do interviews in Amherst if you're already accepted and looking to be funded by their Writing Center as a TA. But I don't know how this year's *ultra* competitive cycle changes the way adcoms review applications, which might all of a sudden include interviews.
  8. Hi CCort! Good to see a fellow PhD applicant here. The schools I mentioned all have CW as concentration, but I also applied to a few PhD programs in English and Lit (all UCs) so we overlap on UCSB and Berkeley. So far, radio silence is killing me, but I distract myself with Bernie Sanders memes and marking of papers (in that order). My MA is from Asia. Can't say specifically here for fear of being made by judgey colleagues who may be lurking lol but I can DM you if you want ? Same boat as you and others--also checking this sporadically throughout the day. And because of the time difference, I always look forward to evenings where the next email could change (or destroy) my life haha. But I'm trying to stay positive by thinking, as long as there's no rejection, that's an acceptance ?
  9. Thank you for all your thoughts and apprehensions. They make me feel seen despite some silence we've had here in the last few days. This year's forum has certainly been less active than last's and that made me wonder about the state of everyone's health, knowing full well the anxiety and anticipation that comes after app submission. In my case, my backup plan is to go for the deferred admission to a English-CW program but with partial funding, it is not a very attractive option. My main source of worry is what colleagues will think of me if I get shut out this year; most of them have gone to top programs in the US and UK and one is usually dismissed if no grad experience abroad. I am also hoping for the best but the more I read how competitive this season is, the more I feel inadequate and sure, SURE that I won't be getting in anywhere. But that doesn't stop me from compulsively checking GC and reddit everyday, and jumping when an email notification comes in. Hugging you all from across the Pacific.
  10. Hi! Been lurking since last year when I applied to four PhD programs in English where I got completely shut out (my lone acceptance was creative writing). This year, I've applied to five UC schools: Berkeley, Santa Barbara, Riverside, Irvine, and San Diego. Finally created an account to express solidarity with everyone applying in such unpredictable times and say thank you in advance for making this process feel less lonely. ? ?
  11. Hello! I am also new here but have been lurking since last year. I applied to one PhD in CW for Fall 2020 and got accepted but had to defer enrollment due to covid (international applicant here). I am looking to apply to seven programs this year: Houston, FSU, USM, UT Dallas, UNLV, Georgia State, and Louisiana Lafayette, all PhD (I have an MA in creative writing, with poetry as focus). Just wanted to express solidarity with everyone who's anxious about this cycle and sending you good juju, hoping we all get accepted to our program of choice ? Anybody else applying to PhD programs?
