  1. Love Kenneth Branagh! My mom actually met him once in Northern Ireland - he was attending a premiere of one of his films in Derry and she helped guide them to the cinema after he and some of the other cast members got lost ? A great scene. You can tell it’s another Patrick Doyle soundtrack, he’s always Branagh’s composer (particularly like his soundtrack for Thor and Frankenstein - he also did the fourth Harry Potter soundtrack) Sharing one of my favourite motivational movie scenes from Captain Marvel - shows we may get knocked down but we will still get up and fight again ? Good luck all!
  2. Best of luck to everyone for this upcoming week and all the rest of February! ☺️
  3. Can give a few suggestions based on different streaming services Netflix (may be different based on location) - The Politician, The Good Place, Grace & Frankie, The Kominsky Method Apple TV - Dickinson, The Morning Show, Ted Lasso Disney Plus - Wandavision (it's so good) Also Euphoria is great (HBO) but a bit intense. (My weekend is mostly uni work - as is every day these days! - but I give myself a break in the evenings to watch Gilmore Girls or Wandavision & Dickinson when they come out on Fridays.) GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE THIS WEEK!!!
  4. I mean I guess most people don’t really know for sure, I’ve seen on the survey results that someone has already received a rejection via an email from their POI. Based on last years, the first week of Feb was when they released results but I’m not sure if it will be the same this year?
  5. Thanks - this puts my mind at ease somewhat. I'm hoping as I communicated with several professors at places I've seen people interviewed (namely Yale & Berkeley) there may somehow be a silver lining to all of this.
  6. Yeah, for sure. I’ve made contact with pretty much all of them beforehand but this one POI has at Vanderbilt has been very encouraging, even reaching put to a prof who’s one of my recommenders at my current school (my prof let me know about it) and also sending me an extra applicant research question set via email soon after I submitted. So I’m really hoping to hear positive news from them this week!
  7. I'll send you a DM re the first question Thanks - as you can see from my signature, I've got about 17 shots in the US so I am hoping one pulls through!
  8. Yeah, for sure. One of my POIs at Northwestern wrote me later after I had sent in all my applications to say he wasn't taking students this year anyway and he's who I would've wanted to work with mainly so I'm not going to beat myself up too much for not applying there. Wishing you all the best with the rest of your applications and I'm sorry to hear about the difficulties you experienced while getting your MA, but congrats on completing it!
  9. While results coming out on weekends is uncommon, Northwestern just released all its results for History PhD applicants today, with some claiming rejections in the history forum so I think it can happen. I think those Duke results are probably real since they have a lot of details attached to them re interviews etc. Hoping they get back for History PhD applicants soon too. Edit: I agree with poster below in advising caution - they may or may not be authentic.
  10. I know, it seems so strange! by the looks of it, northwestern is dumping all of their decisions today. I feel kind of bummed about not applying for history there but for ages I thought they were not going ahead with applications this cycle due to communication with POIs who suggested it may not be. I think I'm just going to leave it with contacting my Vanderbilt prof since it is the weekend after all (even if it isn't to northwestern!) and hope for the best with decisions this week! my anxiety is through the roof now ?
  11. Hi - current student at UCL here. Obviously it's not Oxford or Cambridge, but it's pretty well known since it's in the top 10 of QS world rankings - I think it's number 8. So I'd say if you have a funded scholarship, go for it and congrats! The Political Science department of UCL is probably one of its best departments honestly.
  12. Just checked the survey and see results from Northwestern and Vanderbilt - very nervous now! Anyone claiming the Vanderbilt admit? (Also this is making me wonder if I should contact my POI there for clarity or just wait it out?)
  13. Thanks - this is useful. I reckon since I expect to hear back from the program re admissions decisions this week, I'll give it a wait and hope that they reach out. I guess if haven't heard anything by later in the week I may send them an email but I reckon the decisions are going out early next week based on previous results and intel from another applicant. Sorry to hear about your recommendations issue - I hope all works out alright in the end. I haven't read any of my recommendation letters but know that the professors are hoping for my success for several reasons so am guessing they have wrote good letters. Also - love your icon picture!
  14. Me neither! It feels exciting and nerve-wracking that it'll be February in less than 48 hours! This wait has been so intense though after getting all my applications in early October, I'm so glad it's finally the month!
  15. Just a quick question for anyone who has communicated with their POIs the last few weeks - did they contact you or did you send them an email? I'm assuming it is the former. I'd like to communicate with one POI who I've kept in touch with just to check in but I also don't want to send them an email if that is not the proper etiquette at this delicate time.
  16. Thanks! Yeah, I'm definitely hoping to be able to go back to the US as both me and my mom are very keen to repatriate after living in the UK for most of the last 20 years (minus 2 years abroad in Asia). I think you are right about February being the 'magic month' - I think even starting next week quite a few of the places I've applied to will start getting back. Based on past results and confirmations from others that acceptances will be going out this week I think most likely we'll hear back from - Yale, Vanderbilt, Emory, Duke, Berkeley, UIUC, and potentially Wisconsin-Madison, Chicago & Princeton.
  17. Congrats! Cornell looks like a great school and Ithaca is beautiful. I applied for Government there actually due to a good fit with some POIs in the dept. I’m so nervous about decisions these next few weeks and am not feeling overly optimistic at this point despite having positive responses back from professors when I emailed them back in August. I’m hoping that at least one US school pulls through!
  18. Best of luck with getting off the waitlist for Harvard! You should be very proud for getting that far. So I guess it is safe to assume they’ve notified the 6 applications they’ve accepted? Was a long shot anyway. I think Yale for sure will be next week and Princeton either next week or the following week! V nervous!
  19. Hi there, thanks for this information. Have the acceptance emails gone out already or are they going out this upcoming week, as another poster above suggested? Congrats on getting elsewhere though - where are you headed? ?
  20. Hi, mine has always been there since I attached something via CertiFile so I don’t think there’s anything to worry about. I don’t think we can expect to hear from them until the second week of February at least based on past results
  21. I honestly don't think at this point not hearing is necessarily a bad thing since if you've had good interactions and they already have a good sense of your project they probably didn't feel the need for a formal interview this Jan? Hopefully those positive exchanges will come to fruition in the next couple weeks!
  22. I literally last night analysed the application decisions for all 16 US universities I've applied to and for sure the first couple weeks of February are when a ton of decisions go out. There's a few which are later, but not as many. I've applied to Princeton for a different program (History) but I know their deadline is Feb 15th so for sure expect decisions from them all around between next week and the following.
  23. Best of luck to you! I'm really unsure as to my chances there, had positive email exchanges back in August/September but quite nervous now! I'm an Americanist
  24. Oh wow! Yeah I think several places will be getting back next week! Have you had your Berkeley decision yet + do you know how many they are admitting this year??
