This year it's not just public health apps are up, many fields' apps are up (data science, clinical psy etc.). I read a whole thread of twitter discussions on this, which is quite interesting, some POIs said they have never seen this before, not even during the 2008s (and the 2008s apps were for sure up as well). It's definitely a combination of different things. From what I read, potential of economic recession (reduced opportunity cost for getting an advanced degree), increased interests in some fields e.g. public health, waiving GRE and no requirement for site visits for interviews (as some applicants might need to pay out of pocket e.g. for med schools), and ppl staying at home bc of covid lol.

Also there are programs that don't really have as much a huge increase in apps. I know one of a great program still requires GRE (also not in a big city) and didn't have huge bump in epi apps.

it makes a lot sense to me since many school waive GRE scores... besides the cost issue, as an international student, I feel lucky that many programs do not require GRE this year (remembering GRE vocab is not enjoyable at all T^T)

Hi everyone! The round this year seems so competitive with increased applicants and limited spots. And I was wondering if the next round would be better or be same situation as this year. Any thoughts on it?

I was thinking about this as well. I really don't know if next year is going to be all that different. I can anticipate that all the great applicants from this year that didn't get in will apply again next year along with other great applications. I almost think it could the same or even more competitive next year. What are other people's thoughts?

I agree with @FDawg, I don't think next year will be easier. Many excellent people with good stats would have been admitted to their dream programs if there was no COVID. But now, maybe they'll decide to try again... But maybe less people will make deferment this year...

What in the world, decisions in April?! I am also waiting on them (+Harvard, Yale, UNC) and have two open offers with deadlines, both with mid-April deadlines for acceptance.

I certainly understand it's a strange cycle for programs, but was really hoping to have full information to make my decision by mid-March...

on the same boat... although I assume I am already out, but i just want to have full information before I accept an offer...

  4. Hi everyone, I have a question that is bothering me for a while... I already received admission from program A (which is a very good program). My current advisor suggests that I will have a more competitive research background next year (because I’ll have 1-2 first-author pubs. For now, I do not have any pubs). Thus, he strongly recommends me to try for another year if it ends up that program A is my only choice. However, from my perspective, I am not sure whether 1-2 pubs can be a big addition to my background. If considering my boyfriend's workplace, program A is already an excellent choice for both of us (easy to relocate), unless I can get admission to Stanford/Harvard/UW. I doubt whether it is worthwhile to gap for another year... (yes, this year is my first gap year)

    Thank you!!

I wouldn't worry about it. They all know we're applying to multiple programs. Because of life stuff I only applied to 2 programs, since we can't move cities. The profs and students I talked to were a bit stressed out for my odds, and actually encouraged me to apply to more. Point being - they're not going to take it personally. They know this is a huge life decision, and things will get sorted after the April 15th deadline. ?

thank you soooo much for your words! I'll make my decision carefully!! Also wish best luck to your applications!

Harvard HP will interview everyone they may accept and I think they have completed interviews (I interviewed with decision science track over two weeks ago). I think we are supposed to hear from them this week or next, and it is very reasonable to wait to hear from all the programs you have applied to before committing to a school.

thank you for this update! hoping you hear back positive news soon!!

    Since I’m still logged in...

Definitely! People wait until the very very end. It sucks for folks on the waitlist but honestly, this is your life, your choice. I would never let the waitlist keep me from weighing my options for as long as I need, in order to make a decision (especially when the next one up may not be of any interest to my potential advisor).

With that said, if you know for a fact that you’re not going, then cut the program lose.

aww thanks!! your words really make me feel better!! you're right, we should be really careful about our decisions. I'll take the offer if I do not receive the offer from my top school?

I am waiting on hearing back from just one more program. Once I get news from them, I will probably decide within the week.

what if they don't email you until ~ mid March ? If I accept an offer sent to me one month ago, it feels like I am saying 'hey, you are not my top choice' ?

  9. wondering whether people really make their decisions on 4/15.. I received an offer from my second-choice school, but is still waiting for my top school (but i know the chance is low, because I didn't receive interview invites). One of my previous professor suggests me to make decision ASAP... because there are students on the waitlist..

Decision sciences. I read somewhere they tend to tell everyone at the end of Feb but it seems like this year is a bit weird with COVID, so figured I would check.

decision sciences too!! Did you have interviews? I didn't hear anything from them since I submitted the application..

Hi! So far I’ve interviewed for the Harvard PHS global health track and have interviews scheduled for Stanford Health Policy next week. I received my rejection from Berkeley yesterday.

Congrats! May I ask when do you receive your Stanford HP interview invitation?

On the same boat as y'all. I applied to 4. Got 1 rejection, and the other 3 are radio silent. I'll just keep manifesting that I get an acceptance or a last-minute interview invite lol ?

I haven't heard anything since I received a rej on Jan 12... My friend (1st-year PhD) keeps asking me whether there is any updates from my applications... ? He gave me lots of help during my application so I know he is just caring about me.. But it really adds extra pressure on me ?

Has anyone heard back from NYU PhD Biomedical Sciences in Data, Medicine, and Health track, BU PhD in Epidemiology, or Yale PhD Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases?

Hi, I applied to NYU Population Health and was interviewed on Jan 15th. My feeling is that all people with a quantitative focus were interviewed during that week, but I am not 100% sure. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you!! Hope you get good news from NYU and other programs!
