  1. Thanks for this! I'm also at a pretty wealthy private institution in the US and on an existing internal fellowship, and I don't think i'm fully aware of any mandatory reporting rules, so the idea that I would get paid directly from SSHRC then have to return some of it is..... a lot. Just not sure if folks have heard of students at their institutions who have been in similar situations and not had their original stipends reduced and if so, what %.
  2. @qeta @remote13 @Burner_Question @Burner_Answer @NateL I had a question for Canadian students getting this in the US or other foreign institutions. The award guidelines say we get the award paid directly: https://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/Students-Etudiants/Guides-Guides/TriRTA-TriBFR_eng.asp#other Do folks have a sense of whether our institutions can claw back the money we get or not? For example, would we have to hand over the money to our department and they correspondingly reduce our existing stipend? Ive heard this happens a lot with domestic fellowships and also in Canada, for example it happens with the Ford predoctoral fellowship at my school.
  3. I'm wondering about this too (i'm a first year international student)- I'm worried they'll only give 3 years like CGS-D. I haven't heard back but I sent an email Monday and they're forwarding me to a program officer. Have you heard about how many years you would get the 20k for since we have to give up the 35k one? I'm really hoping for the full 4 because it feels unfair otherwise.

  5. Wow, the same happened to me too. Got a 10.61 (10th ranked app), but I'm a first year in the states. I was pretty stressed they were going to take the whole funding away/this was a mistake, but maybe they'll just swap out the 35k for the 20k and we'll be okay? It's a terrible exchange rate so it's not even that much money haha. Does anyone know what happens to student funding packages if they're international when they get SSHRC? 15k USD isn't replacing my current package obviously, but I'm not sure if theres a clawback policy like with a bunch of US fellowships.
  6. Thanks for the congrats - my degrees are from Canada, but everyone I spoke to as part of my application process at different universities shared that they don't consider international degrees separately from the domestic pool, it just impacts some funding eligibility (though obviously US admissions systems valorize US degrees and experience over non-US non-Canada education). Strongly considering CUNY, but have to hear back from other programs I applied to as well. Good luck with everyone's applications!
  7. After speaking to some students and faculty at CUNY, I'm pretty they don't plan on interviewing and it's not part of their typical admissions process. Not sure about the other programs, however. Due to COVID I'm wondering if the admissions process is going to take longer than normal?
  8. I was lurking too! I've applied to a mix of human geography and urban planning programs: Geography: Berkeley Washington CUNY EES Urban Planning: UCLA MIT Nothing yet, 4/5 programs I spoke to told me they're planning to admit less students than their typical application cycles (except Washington). Wonder if their usual admission timelines will also be shifting. What a turbulent application cycle, but very grateful the GRE was waived for most programs. Good luck all!
