  1. Yes, I got the information from POI's Email. He said that UMD ischool requires all admitted applicant to have at least 2 vouches from faculties, but I only have one. I guess most POIs would be happy to share some info if they are truly interested in you. So try reaching out again, at least you could know you status better in this way.
  2. I don't know exactly how they make these decisions, but generally its made by committee members based on the evaluations given by faculties. So either the faculty gave you not-high-enough scores, or only limited number of faculty showed interest(which is the situation I met for UMD iSchool). Either way, the relative position of you on the waitlist or the ratio of lifting remains unknown. So I would suggest you email your POI or the faculty who interviewed you for more details. You could also try to show your competence again in this way and hope they would reconsider.
  3. I have been rejected by UW iSchool. So I guess you are doing better than me at least! Generally, half of UW's offer gets declined, so I think there might still be some slots in the coming days, but really not so many. Good luck bro, some faculty will reach out to you if they are interested.
  4. Updates: Accepting offer from UW CSE, declining offer from Wisc iSchool. Rejected by Cornell, CMU, UW iSchool, Wisc CS, waitlisted by UMD. Although I still have UIUC iSchool and GT HCC pending, these results won't affect my decision. And I'm telling them my decision for the good of other students. Officially, my application season ends today. I'm very grateful to all the help I received, and I'm also very willing to give advices if you need any from me. Good luck to everyone!
  5. Hi there, I'm rejected by CMU HCII too, just a few hours ago. Their rejection isn't surprising anyway. Good luck to your other programs! I think Syracuse is very likely to admit you considering you being interviewed by Cornell.
  6. Simply off-putting. Not what prople usually expect from a PUBLIC school. Anyway, just move on from this, doesn't worth the time spent on complaining.
  7. Yeah that's not cool. They even charged 140 US dollars for application, which is the most expensive one I had. Simply annoying.
  8. The berkeley ISchool PHD is even more competitive. They usually only take 7or8 students out of hundreds of application. So not applying isn't any loss.
  9. Hi bro! Seems that we have very similar interests! CMU HCII don't give any interviews, so all we could do is just waiting. I havn't got any interview from Cornell either, guess our chance are very light at this moment.
  10. Hi there! I'm also a PhD applicant in HCI field 2021 fall. Here are the programs I applied to: MIT EECS (pure lottery, no hope now) Cornell Information Science (also lottery, no interview, so byebye) UC Berkeley Information Science (Got rejected already. Never had any hope anyway) CMU HCII (Lottery with dream, still have some hope) UW CSE & Information Science (Got interviews from both, maybe because I had a remote internship there) GaTech HCC (Had very good chat with POI before submission, but just got to know that he is leaving GT. SAD) UIUC CS & Information Science (Interviewed by IS, had pretty good chat and connection with POI) UWisc-Madison CS & Information Science (Interviewed by both) UMD Information Science (Had very good chat with POI, but no interview till now) Imperial College Design Science (Scheduled an interview for 2 weeks later) For your first question, I only know that CMU HCII usually don't give interviews, but UW CSE definitely do. For the second question, I think most students would have some pub, but top-tier papers are not that common. I personally have 4 pub in meh journal/conference and 2 submissions to top conference(which sadly got rejected after I submitted phd application). I think most applicants have their own way to show their research competence, usually with pub but could also be portfolio, honors, SOP or even emails with POI. To get admitted, you should have at least some of these to impress the POI/committee.

Meh GPA, rich research experience and 4 pub in meh journals and conferences, 2 submissions to top conferences(but both got later rejected after phd application deadline), no portfolio. No GRE, but decent TOFEL(112=30+30+25+27). Two remote internships at UW Allen School and MSRA. At least 2 strong recommendation letter. I will update any incoming results to this thread.
