Congrats on UCLA! And maybe you will move off the waitlist into the cohort at Yale. I know someone at Columbia who got in that way. Did you happen to go to highschool in California? CA has a weird residency law that you qualify as a resident if you attended highschool there....regardless of where you currently live.

Good luck to everyone with their Yale decisions this weekend or upcoming week. Kick some ass and for those who don’t get the decisions they wanted or expected, come back stronger and keep your head lifted high. Not the end of world. ?

Thank you I appreciate it! I think I just need to wait... Based in everything I read and what people said I'm hoping they will have some sort of assistantship with 15-20 hours and cover tuition for the first year but who knows about the rest.
I will share what my offers at Alfred and UT Austin are after I make my decision if anyone is interested.

Accepted into SAIC MDDO!!!! Just got an email saying the packet is delayed but I'm so excited! This waiting has taken over my week and put me in a total funk and it's so relieving to finally know. I think they're my top choice

I got an acceptance letter from VCU!(Painting)
I thought I was rejected since my interview was Feb 11th.
They said I will get significant funding package. But I am not sure of how much I can get.
Anyways the forum helped me a lot! Thanks! And good luck!

And that's a tradeoff too. As a former epidemiologist I can DEFINITELY tell you that I won't ever miss working for a corporation ever again. Or government either.
As an artist, I have happiness and freedom. Money ain't gonna buy that ya know?

I really like the technique of your work but conceptually I really do not know what direction your work is heading into without some type of statement. Some artwork may not be suitable like the painting of RBG which is a one-off and a committee will see that as a fan art piece.
I think you are a very good painter technique-wise but will need to sustain long series of focalized ideas and develop those much more strongly.

A lot of USC graduates bailed from it and tbh it will be another 1-2 decades before you will see USC come back up in the contemporary art world... UCLA on the other hand is pretty solid year after year... many argue even more innovative and better than Yale does in certain aspects.

It could be a matter of perspective. Let's imagine a scenario here. If you were a curator for the Whitney Biennial would you be more likely to select from Columbia or RISD or someone from University of North Texas.
Granted, six figure debt is bad but if you were in law school or medical school that debt would be much larger :o.

Thank you for reaching out. It helps to have some sort of validation because I keep going over the interaction in my head. Like logically I know I’m in the right, but emotionally I need to come to terms with that.

I wish you the best on your future plans!

Is anyone aware of the situation that is going on at Bard? I'm interviewing with them next week and I've heard snippets from a variety of sources that they are having some difficulties right now (not sure if it is Covid or Faculty related). Anyone have an insight to this via current students?

I'm having a hard time, they all have profs I want to study with. But I hope to have more clarity with gathering more information about each program this upcoming month. And getting final offers/rejections....

Indeed, the rate of failure is very very high for artists. Most folks who get a MFA never continue their art practice.
The school sees you as an investment of their resources to have you graduate from the program with a MFA degree. If you switch to working in another field not related to art then they see that as a failure. Considering the scarce nature of art related things they want to know that you will continue doing art regardless if you have to work another job or taking 1-2 jobs to make ends meet.
That's their viewpoint as I see it.

I think a lot of it too is showing that you can commit to keeping a dedicated studio practice when art is no longer the priority like it is in school. I would say that about 90% of the people I graduated with in 2018 have stopped seriously pursuing their career because of either a lack of direction or focus. Generally people who have been out of school for a few years can prove that they are dead set on becoming a serious practicing artist even while working full-time or multiple jobs. If you continue to build your portfolio after school then that shows the committee that you can motivate yourself without the deadlines and handholding that a class/critique setting provides. I know it is tough because this is the point where you are so ready to keep going (trust me, I feel like a bottle of shaken up soda that has been left on the counter since 2018), but if they are going to give you scholarship and funding, it is in their favor to know that you can be a practicing artist despite life getting in the way.

Hey, if you don't mind me asking how old you are? If I get accepted for the upcoming cycle I will be turning 24. The age discrepancy is definitely something that is considered. My mentor and undergrad professor was actually on the MFA committee at BU, so I got a lot of valuable advise from them. They told me it is VERY rare for them to accept you into an MFA program right out of undergrad. I actually took a year off before I applied because it makes you more marketable. I know it sicks, that just how the game is played. I am sorry that they brought it up during your interview, that is very unprofessional!

Another thing to they consider is not only your age, but your maturity level during the interview... meaning, you may be one of the youngest candidates but that does not automatically disqualify you. It is all about how you answer their questions. They are not looking for perfection. Remember that in your interview... striving for perfection makes you seem immature. Acknowledge that  you  might not know all of the answers, but that is why you are pursuing an MFA.... They love hearing things like that!

Let me know if there is anything else I can help with! Best of luck!
