  1. hi everyone, I was recently admitted to bu and gtown for a masters degree in theoretical linguistics. I plan to do syntax research and then apply to PhD programs after the first year. I am not sure which program is more suitable for me. Here are some factors I am considering: BU is a one-year program but I can be a part-time student and have more time for research to graduate in 2 years. Gtown is 2-year, so I'd be a full-time student. I presume I'd have less time for research at gtown. By the time I apply to PhD programs, I'd have more classes on my transcript if I go to Gtown. BU seems to be much newer than Gtown, but Gtown is more known for its sociolinguistics and only has 2 syntacticians out of 25 professors/lecturers. I already have a clear idea of what research to pursue if I go to BU, but not Gtown. also BU hosted an open house for masters students. Gtown didnt, which gave me the impression that the program at Gtown doesnt value their MS students as much. Not sure if this matters but BU offers an MA and Gtown offers an MS. Is anyone familiar with the program at either of the schools? Does the ranking of your master's program matter when you're applying to PhD programs?
  2. Hi, I’m new to the forum. im still applying to the programs in Europe but I gotta say... man there are too few MA programs in the states! I could only find programs offered by Penn, Georgetown, bu, u of South Carolina, u of Alabama, and u of colorado Boulder. As an international poc, living in relatively more conservative areas honestly makes me quite nervous (especially after COVID), so this leaves me with even fewer choices for ma programs in the states :’( British schools seem to only offer 1-yr degrees, which is not ideal considering I want to pursue a PhD right after. Canadian schools are great, but require me to have more background in linguistics than I currently do as I only started taking linguistics classes as a senior and took another year to earn a second major (I still applied though; still waiting to hear back from ubc). I guess I’m here to ask if there are more MA programs in the states that I missed, and that I probably still have time to apply to?
  3. are people still applying to schools? i currently finished 5 on my list and still got 3-4 left. not sure if i want to apply to one of them. but i just got rejected by uoft and am currently super worried that i wont be accepted in to any of the programs
