Hello everyone! I am hoping to gather some advice from you all. If faced with a decision between U of A or UBC which school would you choose? I would love to hear your reasons, opinions, pros/cons. I am deciding between both schools at the moment. Thanks!!

I chose between UBC and McMaster in the end I picked UBC because it is where I want to practice and that’s where I wanted to build contacts and connections for after graduation.

I guess I’m just highlighting my thought process that although programs are different they all get people to the same point so I focused on some of the facets beyond the school

Has anyone completed AUDI 403 at UBC? Can you speak to how difficult you found the course to be (esp. given that the final exam is 80%). Thanks!

No help here, since I'm currently enrolled. But I'd also like to know more about the final if anyone has some insight, since the fact that it's worth 80% is stressing me out a bit!

I took the course last year and even though I was an absolute wreck because of the shutdown etc I still managed to do well. The questions on the final felt really vague... idk how to describe it more than that. Make sure you know your stuff but even though I thought I studied pretty well I got confused about some of the questions but again don't stress even though I felt this way in the moment I still did well! Good luck!

Does anyone know when Western typically starts sending waitlist offers? Is it after the April 15th acceptance deadline?

Western says it will be sending out waitlist offers "starting in mid to late April" so I think it will definitely be after the 15th. On past forums people seems to start hearing around the 18th but then offers continue well past that as people decline their waitlist offers and they move down the list.

Oh god yeah haha, I don't think I've had my email not open for longer than like 2 mins today unless I had to be away from my computer

I feel very lucky to have been waitlisted at a couple schools but I am still holding out hope that I can get an acceptance. UBC is the only school I haven't heard from so I am spending a lot of mental energy on this haha. It feels weird that AUDI would send out and not SLP I don't know if they have in the past but now I'm worried that SLP is delayed for some reason... but these are just thoughts I torture myself with

Okay, thank you! I got it in my head that they'd be releasing SLP choices today as I think they released at least some audiology results yesterday, and now I can't stop thinking about it haha. I don't even know that I'll attend, but I'd really like to know whether I even got in ?

OMG same, I got myself so worked up and now I keep checking my email every 0.5 seconds  ?

I'm in the 3rd quadrant for SLP at Western. I guess I'll talk to some of you again for the 2022 application session ?

I sent an email over the weekend and I know that there must be a big backlog but I haven't heard anything back yet and I am once again obsessing

Edit: I literally just got the email right after I posted this I am also in the 3rd quadrant

So as I’ve expected I’m way down at the bottom of westerns waitlist :( I haven’t given up hope though! Does anyone know if anyone’s ever gotten in from the 4th quadrant?

I know it is all speculation but I does anyone have any thoughts about how many people are in each quadrant? I know that in the past people said that they got in from the second quadrant and maybe people get offered from 3/4th quadrants but we don't hear about it b/c posts on the forum seem to fizzle later in the summer when those offers might go out.

A HUGE congrats to everyone who has received an acceptance so far! That's super exciting! Was just curious if anyone has heard from UBC yet or have any idea when they might release acceptance emails?

I haven't and neither have any of my friends who applied there. Last year they sent out rejections on the 7th. At this point it will most definitely be after the long weekend but hopefully before the 7th

Does anyone know what the chances are of getting in once placed on the wait list?

Whoever has the answer to this question could become a god on this forum. This is very anecdotal but it seems like more peoples top choice was UofT vs Western so I feel like there might be more movement on that list. Assuming that most people who got in at one got in to the other. Creeping on past forums I would say it is common for people to get in off the waitlist but not everyone so without knowing your place it is impossible to know.

Congratulations to everyone on their acceptances! I am waitlisted at Western and thought I’d share my stats incase it’s helpful for anyone else :)

I have a 3.47 sgpa according to opras. 93 hours volunteering in research at CHEO, 63 hours volunteering at a private speech clinic, and 1300+ hours as the administrative assistant at a private speech clinic (my current job). My professional reference is my boss who is the owner of the speech clinic and an SLP so I’m sure that looked good. This is my second time applying!

I’m trying to stay hopeful! & again, congratulations to everyone on their acceptances and waitlist offers!

I am also waitlisted at Western I thought I would share my stats here too because it is a nice contrast.

I have a 3.9 sGPA. I have no direct experience at a speech clinic (thank-you COVID). I have worked  full time/part time on two research projects one of which (part time) was with a SLP. I have volunteer experience with children as a coach (5 years) and other volunteer experience in first aid (6 years). I didn't use a professional reference I used a personal reference (swim coach). My other references were professors that I had taken multiple classes with. This is my first time applying.

Edit: it probably seems crazy that I didn't use the SLP reference but they didn't know me very well as I had just started to project back in January.

  11. I am assuming you guys are anxiously waiting like me. One thing I like to remind myself as someone who has been rejected repeatedly from lots programs is definitely be sad because rejection sucks but also remember the selection process in competitive programs is pretty unfair.

I don't mean that the people who got in didn't deserve it or have a worse application its the fact that because the programs are competitive it pushes the standards way up. Honestly from seeing people on this forums stats and excitement everyone is a good candidate. Even people who have been "rejected" or "waitlisted" would most likely do great in those programs and be successful SLPs if there were more spaces.

Anyways just remember that a rejection (in most cases) isn't a we reviewed you and thought you wouldn't do well its more that someone else could have had more experience hours, a couple higher GPA points etc. and they had to draw that line somewhere. This is a game of comparisons unfortunately. If you don't get in its good to be thinking about how you can improve your application but know that it was probably pretty excellent to start with so be hard on the system and not yourself ?

McMaster updated their website with the average sub-GPA of applicants who received interviews for admission. This year it was 3.9, which I think is high compared to previous years.

That seems crazy high especially as just the average for interviews! I saw on the forum that previous years it was like a 3.8ish so that feels like a big jump I wonder why it went up so much.

Haha! I admire your restraint! I know that there is no way that I will be able to sleep on Wednesday anyways, so I am planning on staying up till midnight and checking my portals obsessively. Lol. ?

This is so accurate. My family knows that I will hear back April 1st but I am giving myself some breathing space by not telling them that acceptances come in at midnight.

haha i feel you! Just clarifying, did they send that to everyone regardless of if you already activated your account? Mine says I already did when I log on, but I just want to make sure there wasn't some technical error since the subject of the email said *your* identity requires activation.

Yes and I didn't realize it was sent to everyone so I went to check again and it will just say that you identity is already activated. After more careful reading I figured out it was sent to everyone and that if you can get on the portal you are good.

General question - If I'm interested in the field of voice, does anyone know which schools are most geared towards that? I'm interested in any schools (even abroad), in case I do end up needing to re-apply next year

When you say voice do you mean singing and voice training?
