I've narrowed it down to two, but will have to bring the whole family to visits before we can take a decision. I'm pretty excited about both schools

While we're on the topic, here's one more reason to be angry at the conservative government: In the Feb 27th budget, we read: "Scholarships granted by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council will be focused on business-related degrees." I strongly encourage you to sign the following petition set-up by Niki Asthon from the NDP: http://nikiashton.ndp.ca/sshrc About a hundred professors co-signed a letter on this topic. It was published in Le Devoir of the 28th. There must be an english version too, I'm just too lazy to find it, and this is the one that was sent to me by email: http://www.ledevoir.com/2009/02/27/236191.html Also, you could do like me, and write an actual letter to your member of parliament. Remember that sending letters to the House of Commons is free. You don't need a stamp.

Taking Courses at Other Schools while in a Program
jackassjim replied to GreatMix's topic in Political Science Forum
It's usually perfectly fine. Unless, of course, a perfectly capable prof on your dissertation is giving the exact same course at your school. -

Sorry I'm so late coach, I hope you can include some of these in future playlists! Edit: Oh, and you mention Clifford Brown in your original post. Arturo Sandoval, trumpet player from Irakere, has recorded a beautiful album to the memory of brown. He actually overdubs some of Brown's song. While that may sound cheesy, it actually works and it is quite nice. You need to relax: Ted Hawkins - The Kershaw Sessions Alvin Youngblood Hart - Big Mama's Door Baden Powell - O Som Baden Powell Cat Power - Jukebox Harry Manx - Dog my Cat Kelly Joe Phelps - Lead me on, or the album with a blue cover (can't remember title right now). Marc Ribot - Works of Frantz Casseus Mississippi John Hurt - Any compilation of the 1920s recordings, the 1960s ones are ok too, but not as good. You need a boost: Irakere - Irakere 22-20s - 22-20s Fela Kuti - Expensive Shit James Mathus and His Knowckdown Society - Stop and Let the Devil Ride Judas Priest - British Steel (Rooooooob!) You need an in-between: Pentangle - Pentangle Dave van Ronk - All albums Elton John - Tumbleweed Connection Bo Carter - Banana in your fruit basket Ry Cooder - Many good albums in the 70s (e.g. Boomer's Story, Into the Purple Valley, etc.)

I have no idea. Sorry. But no interview was scheduled for me.

Good for you!

I heard from UBC (PhD) via email yesterday.

email says 29

I'd rather answer that as a PM. It'll be in your box in a few minutes

Yes. It was really unexpected. I feel very lucky.

In short: yes. I'm sorry to be so pessimistic for those still waiting.

Information confirmed

I guess that's of no use to those who need it the most: Youtube: This video is not available in your country.

Me thinks: "That should be enough to get in..." == "Good enough to be looked at and possibly admitted" "That should be enough to get in..." != "Auto-admit"

Edited for lack of relevance

UCLA is a huge school. What makes you think it would be less "factory-like"?

How much will money factor in your decision?
jackassjim replied to t_ruth's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Short answer: More than I would like it too. -
Good info on the TA remuneration. Thanks. The letter implied that you get the same 15000 as a GSI. The cost of living is certainly something to consider. I have been googling Ann Arbor like crazy, and that summer festival looks pretty nice too.
-
Same here. Certainly not as good as some of the other offers.

Actually, she'll be a grad student living on a stipend very similar to what I got. But you got the idea right: no part-time Yeah, plisar, I would really appreciate any info you can get. Especially since you're already on the ground over there. It would sure be helpful. I am also in the process of contacting current grad students who live in the area to figure out how they are doing it. Rising_star: I figured as much about the university daycare. I just took that as a datapoint to get an idea of the market. Thanks a lot for the suggestions though. Those are options I will definitely investigate.
