    Hey,

Where did you find the information that UPenn GCB will send international student interview invitations on late Jan? I emailed the program coordination but still have not received response yet.

I think I saw it from last year's forum(?).  Also some from last cycle told me that UPenn sent out interviews separately for domestic and international students.

That's right, if you look at the results section here on gradcafe you'll see internationals get the call on late january :)

    Hello everybody!!

I just found the gradcafe because I was anxious looking for interview dates from previous years. I'm a student from Mexico! Sincerely I'm kinda scared because the international rate of acceptance is kinda low in almost all programs I applied. However here they are:

     UPenn: GCB

    Columbia: IPCMBS

    UCSD: BSB

UCSC: BMEB [Interview mail received on 12/15]

    UCLA: Bioinformatics

UCSF: Biomedical Informatics [Rejected on 12/15]

    UChicago: GGSB

I'm tired of refreshing my mail.

Wish you all good luck :)!!!!

    A little update of this:

UPenn: GCB [I read international students interview invitations are send on late January]

Columbia: IPCMBS [Interview mail received on 12/21]

UCSD: BSB [Talked with students, told me internationals are invited on late January]

UCSC: BMEB [Interview mail received on 12/15]

    UCLA: Bioinformatics [waitlisted on 01/10]

UCSF: Biomedical Informatics [Rejected on 12/15]

UChicago: GGSB [Historically starts with invitations on late February]

Can anyone share experiences of compbio/bioinformatics interviews? will there be many technical questions? thank you!

Hi I have talked with many PhD students at UCs and told me that the interviews are super chill, you just have to know what you have done! they won't ask you nothing in detail as how a method works (maybe just the basic, but they don't expect a super detailed answer). The best advice they have given to me is to not get nervous and just be myself. They want to know how you are as a person and how you could develop if you join any lab at the university.

    Don't @me, I'm just sharing what I've been told.

    Good luck everyone :)

Does anyone if these programs are done sending out invites? (international student if that matters)

    - JHU - Computer Science (with focus on Computational Biology)
    - CMU-UPitt CPCB
    - UPenn - GCB
    - Stanford - Biomedical Informatics
    - UC Berkeley - Computational Biology
    - Brown - Computational Biology
    - NYU - Computational Biology

    - Yale CBB

I'm international too and we just match on UPenn, haven't heard back from them tho. Regarding the other programs, I don't know if they separate domestic from international students for invitations, but I've seen some posts/tweets about YALE, NYU, Stanford and Berkeley. Don't give up yet, if you haven't received a proper rejection there's still hope :)

    Good luck! :)

Last year they have separate batches of interviews for domestic students and for international students. I saw international students get interview invites at the end of January last year, though they don't take many international students. So I guess if you are an international student like me, you can still keep hope.

Let's hope so! I haven't heard anything from them!

    I go this email:

    Dear Applicant,

Thank you for applying to UCLA’s PhD Bioinformatics IDP Program.

At this time, all interview invitations have been sent out.

If you have not received one, then you have been placed on our waitlist until further notice.

If a future interview is given to you, then you will receive an email, otherwise a deny of admissions from UCLA Graduate Division.

Please keep an eye out on your email or continue to check your status on the UCLA Graduate Admissions Website.

    Best to you,

    Bioinformatics IDP Student Affairs Officer

It's the exact same generic email that I got 2 yrs ago (I applied 2 yrs ago and got rejected) bummer :(

I got exactly the same email. I was hoping this was a real wait-list, but now that I read the comments, yeah, sounds like a soft rejection, but I haven't lost hope yet :) Let's wait a little more.

Has anyone head back from UCSD or UCLA? I've come across some applicants who have already heard back from UCLA. A little anxious now, any information is appreciated ?

They already sent the first batch of interviews. Historically they send either rejections or the second batch of invitations during the first weeks of January, so let's wait. I didn't hear from them on the first batch, but haven't received a rejection so I still have hopes.

As of 12/23, here are the results I've gotten as a U.S. student:

    • CMU Biological Sciences (Interview 12/22)
    • UCSD Bioinformatics (Interview 12/22)
    • UNC BBSP (Interview 12/20)
    • UCLA BINF
    • Duke CBB
    • Caltech Bio
    • Cornell CB
    • USC CBB
    • Stanford Biosciences
    • UC Berkeley CB
    • UChicago GGSB

Pretty sure UCLA/Duke sent out invites already, don't know about the others.

Congrats!!! I didn't know UCSD already started with invitations!!! Does your application page have a new status or it appear as submitted?

    As of 12/23:

Applications out: MIT EECS, Stanford BMI, UCSF BMI, Penn GCB, Harvard SSQB, Tri-I CBM, UCLA Genetics and Genomics Track, MSSM Biomed Sci, and Emory PBEE

Interview Invites Received: UCLA (12/9), UCSF (12/12), Stanford (12/16), Penn (12/21), and Emory (12/22)

From what I've gathered, it seems like I'm probably out on Harvard, but I'm not sure w/r/t Tri-I, MSSM (invites probably come out January), and MIT (app deadline was 12/15 and it's a huge program. EECS dept calendar has "Grad Admissions Round Up" scheduled for 1/18-1/24).

UPenn GCB is my dream program and haven't received an invitation yet :( hope they're not done with it.

Hello everyone! I just discovered this forum today lol. Thinking about sharing some of my status here.

    Programs I applied:

    • UC Santa Cruz BMEB, interview on Jan 20, 2022
    • UCSF BMI, Rejection on Dec 15, 2021
    • UC Berkeley Computational Biology
    • Stanford BMI
    • Harvard BIG
    • UCLA Bioinformatics
    • UCSD Bioinformatics
    • MIT CSB
    • MIT HST MEMP
    • USC QCB

International student in the States. (Big RIP cuz a lot of programs don't hv much funding to admit international students)

Have been working in a research lab for 2 yrs after graduation.

I'm international at the US too, haha. I have received the same news from those two universities too!!! Guess I'll see you at UCSC. We also overlap on UCLA and UCSD :D

Regarding UCSF I think they're not taking international students and they're being filtered from the beginning, sad but that's our reality lol.

Good luck on the rest of your applications!
