meanwhile.... waking up this morning to discover that the first thing I did after getting home last night was get on gradcafe and post a MAPH screed seems to be definitive proof that applying to grad school has permanently broken my brain 

Ugh, I'm so sorry to hear that. If it makes you feel any better, I only learned about CLS/was encouraged to apply because I would like to apply for a Fulbright in another post-Soviet country next year. You're so lucky to have gotten that experience! It seems a bit hard to understand the logic in the selection process.

Much to my surprise, it's starting to look like we're not getting the semifinal notifications today! A watched email never boils I guess. Fingers crossed we hear back soon!

Good luck to you as well! Persistence is an admirable trait. I read in the past that the announcements tend to come around 4-5pm ET, do you have any experience with that?
