  1. If the Penn JD and Masters admit is here, could you please PM me?
  2. Congratulations to the GW, Penn, Harvard and Columbia admits! ?
  3. Okay, so I understand the realities associated with obtaining a history PhD and how it's grueling work for the duration of the program, and then basically impossible to obtain a tenure-track position once you're out. But I do wonder why we constantly talk about how getting a PhD in history is a "bad idea" and the "wrong choice." I can't speak on behalf of other people, but I feel as though we get enough of that from our family and friends. I just don't understand why forums about getting a PhD in history need to be similarly discouraging. We are all here because we applied to PhD programs and hope to get in. We have already made the decision that it is right for us. Why do we need to be bombarded by kind internet strangers that are concerned for our well-being and decision-making abilities? We are all adults. We have read the statistics and are very much aware of what awaits us. Why can't this be a place where we celebrate each other for wanting to pursue something that we are truly, deeply passionate about?
  4. Thank you! Honestly, it probably helped that I was only on here that one time (for several hours, but still!) And then I told my friends and sister that I will not go on for another 2 weeks (hoorah accountability!) And what's the point of going on here if you can't cry to your friends and family that clearly you're getting rejected from X school because "THEY ALREADY ACCEPTED FIVE PEOPLE AND I DIDN'T EVEN GET AN INTERVIEW." That's probably very oddly specific to me, so probably not helpful =P.
  5. Hello all! I'm new here =). Stupidly decided to lurk 2-3 weeks ago, realized I was likely going to get rejected from Berkeley, and then vowed to take a few weeks off the forums so I don't drive myself crazy. I got my first acceptance yesterday, so am feeling like I can come out of the woodwork and celebrate everyone's good news! And cheer on everyone else! My stats and background are oddly specific, so I'm more than happy to answer questions but please PM me if you do have them. I'm paranoid that professors are lurking here (as if they don't have actual research and teaching commitments to attend to, amiright?) Anyway, all of that long preamble to say: hello! I got accepted at Princeton yesterday and a few hours later rejected from Berkeley.
