MSW Canadian Applications Fall 2023
stillpsych replied to stillpsych's topic in Social Workers Forum
@angelicpiano I totally feel you! Personally, I don't have the highest GPA for my schools of choice, I have a 3.3 and I know most students applying have a 3.8 or higher. I had to move out of my family home abruptly right at the beginning of my fourth year which meant i started working two jobs and twice the amount of hours and my schoolwork took a backseat. I'll be explaining this in the personal statements but I still feel that my GPA is so low I might not be considered at all. My top choices are OISE for Counselling and U of T for Social Work. The bonus is that because I had to work so much more, I have a lot of direct social service experience and continue to get some in my current job as an intake coordinator. I'm hoping once this comes together in an application I could be admitted but truly I think it's luck of the draw!- 997 replies

Counselling Psychology Canadian Application Forum Fall 2023
stillpsych replied to stillpsych's topic in Psychology Forum
I'm applying only to the OISE MEd in Counselling Psychology, my other programs are all MSWs. It's the only local counselling psychology programs, I have more options in my city with MSWs and I can't afford to move away for the program so my options are kind of limited. All in all, I'm applying to: U of T MSW, OISE MEd, YorkU MSW, Laurier MSW online (this program is slightly longer but would allow me to keep my full-time job and I could complete my practicum at my workplace) and then Adler and Yorkville are also options but I'll wait on those applications since they're rolling applications.- 416 replies

MSW Canadian Applications Fall 2023
stillpsych replied to stillpsych's topic in Social Workers Forum
What programs is everyone applying to or planning to apply to? For me, I plan to apply to the U of T MSW, Wilfred Laurier MSW online and York MSW. I also plan on applying to the U of T MEd in Counselling Psychology as well; last season this was my top choice program but I didn't get in. This is my first time applying to the MSW route, I didn't know much about it before. I think my top two programs are the U of T MSW and the Laurier MSW. The U of T MSW is such a good program overall but the Laurier MSW would allow me to keep my full-time job and complete my practicum at my workplace (I work in a psychology clinic as an intake coordinator). I might apply to Adler or Yorkville as backups but honestly the almost $50,000 tuition is way more than I could handle. Would love to hear where everyone else is in the process!- 997 replies

Hi everyone! I am currently working on my applications for counselling psychology programs this Fall. Hoping for a Fall 2023 start! It is super early but I figured these forums were so helpful last year that I'd start one for this season. Best of luck to everyone!

Hey everyone! I'm creating this forum for those of us applying to MSW programs for Fall 2023 across Canada. I figured this would be really helpful as some of the previous forums were super helpful.

in other news, I think I'm going to pursue the Yorkville MA... ultimately, I just want to be a therapist and have a private practice, exactly which program gets me there doesn't matter as much and it allows me to work full time and possibly graduate with 0 debt! lol just looking at the bright side -

When I go in the portal it says "submitted" but then when I click on the application I have an update on the status page which shows this letter -

I got rejections from both Clinical & Counselling in the portal. It still says "submitted" but then there's a status update when I click on the actual application. So weird that no one else got a response from CP... -

Don't apologize haha! To your first reply though, I thought about social work but I found the programs emphasized a sociological perspective but there's no courses focused on critical multicultural practice. I also found most of the courses were "Social Work practice in X" but I want to take courses like couples counselling, family therapy, trauma which are more characteristic of counselling psych programs like OISE or Yorkville. For the Yorkville critics: my first boss in a psyc clinic said not to do that program but then she went on to hire a bunch of people and practicum students from that program so I kind of disregarded that. My current boss, also a psyc clinic, suggested the program or Adler if I don't get into OISE. I have also seen some comments on reddit about the program but mostly related to the cost. I see Yorkville grads doing really well and being competent practitioners, the only issue is for me is the cost, I'm sure I'd be able to find a practicum. -

I'm in the same boat! I'm considering Yorkville starting in January if I don't get into OISE. I think the deadline for September already passed but OISE is my top choice since I'm also restricted to Toronto. Some people speak poorly about Yorkville but I see people going to that program and doing really well for themselves. My own therapist was a Yorkville student and she was amazing! -

Yes I totally understand your frustration! I'm trying to decide if I should stay in my job? Look for full time work? Get more volunteer experience? It's just so hard to plan anything without knowing what their decision is.... I'm really hoping we hear back this week -
I keep hoping decisions come out this week since it's the beginning of April, I can't wait until May i'm going crazy with anxiety

I'm losing my mind waiting for an answer and I'm trying to make decisions but everything feels on hold because they haven't released decisions yet. End of April/May is crazy... everyday I check the portal to see if anything has changed and everyday it still says "Submitted"; this has been quite a frustrating process -

Has anyone emailed OISE to find out if we're getting results early April or mid-april? I need to figure out if I need a full-time job or stay in my current role! -

@cofffeee do you mind sharing what clinic it is? been hearing that it's hard for Yorkville students to find practicum spots so i'm taking note of the clinics that do accept them -
