  1. my professor said ucb is better at structural. Geotech is better at uiuc. I got ad to both and i am heading to ucb. lol

The title says it all. Just looking for some input from you guys. These days I will talk to some professors that are alumni of both schools. I do have some idea, but would like to hear how other people perceive those two schools and programs.

    Thank you!

  2. I was not invited there. Guess the chance is small .. COME ON ,! Stanford UBC and MIT!!!!!

At the recruiting weekend they said that funding information will go out by the end of this month. They said if you are offered funding that they would appreciate it if you accept or decline the funding offer by April 15th, other than that if you aren't offered funding I don't think it matters.

  3. ya. so expensive. I saw their first ad in the result section ! dude, thats so wired, they still use postal service in 21 century. i guess they wanna show 125$ mean something. lol

I really have no idea what are their ad stats. I applied to the MIT too.

As far as Stanford concerns - $125 app fee?!!! They should be first to announce decisions!;)

  4. that was tough. I looked over the record of last year. The first ad was given about Feb 23rd, which has passed. I was thinking the next two weeks will be stressful.

Btw, I also applied MIT and stanford; do you know some of their situations ? it seems stanford is always late for ads.

I didn't hear about any admits in Structures..

I think every branch handles their own admission process, so I guess there must be someone in charge. I know that Dr Stojadinovic had something to do with it last year or a couple of years ago...

Btw, I was told that Structures group usually receives about 350 applications, and they admit only around 50 students each year...

  5. hope UCB offers will come to you guys later !! i called UCB yesterday and they told me that at least some offers for every sub branch have sent out. and they told me the process is rolling till mid Apr. From what i've seen, a few offers from civil systems have been posted here, has anyone heard from structural engineering ? does one person handle all branches or one professor from one branch handle it independently ?:blink:

  6. Hi, everyone. I have one question about the amount of fund that i can put in the application page. Do you guys think this really matters in application process ? If i put more than i have, will the comittee not consider my financial assistance that i request ? on the other hand, if i put less than what i have, will they reject my application simply because they won't offer not enough financial assistance or they just assume that i can not afford it ? I need to make a huge amount of loans if i go to graduate school without financial offer. Just curious about this. Thanks for all the opinions.

  7. I am going to apply Graduate School with fellowships. Do I need to submit transcript which includes this semester ? If so, grades won't be there until the end the deadline, which i heard it may have an effect on application ? Appreciate any input . :)

  8. I heard a lot of M.S got RA in Berkeley and finished school after obtaining M.S. Just curious how they got funding and graduate as a MS ?

From what I've seen, schools in CS (my field) that have a MS program and a MS/PhD program tend to make the Ms program a terminal one, so if you ultimately want a PhD, you choose the MS/PhD option. It is also my understanding that if people choose a Ms/PhD program it would be because they want to get a PhD after the MS, not because they want to get a MS with funding.

  9. I am going to apply CEE in Berkeley, Stanford, MIT. Do a lot of applicant choose MS/PhD over M.S simply to get funding ? ? Do graduate schools give funding like to MS/PHD over M.S ??? MS/PhD is not a commitment for PhD, that is my understanding. I appreciate other opinions on this.

  10. I'll just be reiterating what newms said above but - what you write is not set in stone and no one will be upset if you change your mind. In fact, if you go through grad school without ever changing any of your interests or goals (refining them, changing methodology, using the same methodology to explore a new area, etc) that will be surprising and (I think) quite disappointing. You're continuing your education to both broaden and deepen your knowledge, so it makes perfect sense that you will make some fine tuning and have a better understanding of your interests once you've started the grad school process. If you're not decided on what you want to do after school I think it's a reasonable strategy to say so and then go on to explain in your SOP how the school you've chosen fits you in terms of giving you the kind of guidance and mentorship that you'll need in order to decide, and how it can train you to both continue studying X in academia and getting a position in industry in field Y.

I like ' it's a reasonable strategy to say so and then go on to explain in your SOP how the school you've chosen fits you in terms of giving you the kind of guidance and mentorship that you'll need in order to decide, and how it can train you to both continue studying X in academia and getting a position in industry in field Y.' I think this is very helpful and thoughful. I appreciate this. My language is lacklusker. I think i will start from there.

  11. Firstly, you need to be honest about what you want to do after your degree. If you're not sure, don't say I want to be a professor, etc, just to put it on your SOP. Secondly, most (hopefully all) admissions committees realize that a lot of people change their long term goals in some way after years of study, so they won't expect you to set out exactly what you're going to be doing with the rest of your life. What you do need yo be able to do is to convince them that you have goals and that you are motivated to accomplish your goals. You should stress your love for research and explain as best as you can, that your love for research may lead you to industry or to academia.

I agree mentioning both possibility of in the SOP while stating a strong passion towards research. I think i am going to start from there.
