  1. Do people ever reach out after an interview about a timeline for decisions?
  2. I appreciate your advice. I agree that I only applied to a small handful of top programs, but, I have a home in NJ with my wife and son and am unwilling to relocate for PhD. So my list won’t be amenable to change one cycle to the next. Instead, I am focused on improving my application (equally difficult given that I don’t want to take out even more student loans for masters credential.) Gonna ask faculty mentors for some advice.
  3. Yeah, CUNY and Yale have def had their final nail in the coffin. Pretty sure I butchered my Rutgers interview, so that just leaves NYU and Princeton for me. Pretty sure I’ll be reapplying next year lol. Already starting to lick my wounds.
  4. Does anyone know anything or have thoughts about CUNY MALS? Masters in Liberal Studies? More loans but might need to consider Masters to boost application.
  5. I really have no idea, BUT my sense from years of previous posts suggests they only admit those they interviewed.
  6. Congratulations! Sounds like a very positive interview, and thanks for clueing us all in. I was just practicing my “tell me about yourself” response when I saw your update I am relieved to know it is so casual and comfortable. Did she mention anything about hearing back, number of interviewees, etc?
  7. Euclydian, great to hear from you! If you don't mind me saying, 3 years is shorter than expected program structure, were there reasons for your leaving, or perhaps did you come into the program after completing coursework elsewhere? Also, could you share some general experiences in the program, as well as your research interests, maybe even some of the faculty you worked with and your impression of them? I am quite interested in the program and would value your advice as a previous student.
  8. I am scheduled for interview next week… I get the sense they are interviewing a very large group, so cuts will still have to be made after… the meeting is so short and not with my POIs so I am unsure how to prepare beyond reviewing my materials and being prepared as I would for any other interview!
  9. Thank you, I appreciate you offering advice. Guess i've got some reviewing to do!
  10. Yes, same initials, also not faculty I listed. My assumption is they are on the admissions committee. Now I am not sure how to approach or prepare for the interview, and I am unbelievably nervous. Feeling like a fish out of water.
  11. Congrats!!! I know you are a reapplicant, do you have any experience with Rutgers from a previous cycle?
  12. Hey all, just wanted to share that I just received an invitation for interview a Rutgers! Literally shaking lol.
  13. The only work I’m familiar with is Posselt, where else would you suggest I explore? Soc of ed is not my area by far, but was largely focused in my undergrad curriculum… when I have brought up posselt’s work to people (faculty of different disciplines on Reddit lol) recently, they have suggested it is out of date and does not reflect the nature of grad admissions today (they basically felt spited by Posselt and think it’s way more judicious and less slighted to GRE and social biases now.) Is there any more current work you might suggest?
  14. Holy crap. You put in the work for sure! Maybe a starting point is reaching out to faculty mentors for some research opportunities directly. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you this cycle!
  15. So question for reapplicants: what, if anything, did you do to change your application from last cycle? Trying to get a picture of what I might look to do if I’m back at it next year. I know research experience is the way to go, but I’m having a hard time imagining where I would go for that outside of some work related context, which my job currently (and the foreseeable future) will not entail.
  16. Out of my list of 5, I am expecting interviews from Rutgers, CUNY and Yale based on previous years’ on results page. So for me, it’s 3/5. ??‍♀️
  17. I guess I just wonder why you lose out on funding if the first awarded student says no… seems awful that you don’t get the opportunity to extend the same award to another candidate. I assumed that a departments biggest fear was protecting the matriculation stats. Seems like a weird penalization to take the award away all together.
  18. Hey all. Haven't seen a thread for this particular opportunity in previous years, but thought I would start one. I myself am interested in the sociology dept, but the fellowship is open to many other disciplines. Thought it would be nice to hear from others anxiously waiting to hear back for it... Princeton is my ideal program, but imagine my admission would come through fellowship rather than direct admit. Beyond graduate students listed on the department page, I havent been able to see a list of people admitted through fellowship and get a sense of their background/profiles, so maybe we can crowdsource this info on gradcafe! Any one else hopeful for the Pre-Doc at Princeton? (I was also a P3 Princeton PhD Preview participant this year, if any of you were as well!)
  19. Relieved to hear that for you! I would have been losing it too. I’m sure we are all getting a little nutty right about now. My own nuttiness looks like reading, re-reading, and re-re-reading all of my application materials and tearing them apart ?. Waiting for another month to get some responses (at a minimum!) will be the death of me!!! Glad you got your app in to join the waiting game with the rest of us.
  20. Welp, I am still twiddling my anxious little fingers away. Does anyone here have a sense of how many people are asked to interview at programs that do utilize them? Looks like most of my programs get a large volume of applications, in the hundreds I think… for so few slots, do they interview a group of 20? 30? I imagine getting an interview means you’ve made it to the cream of their crop.
  21. @twosweet and @anxiousbutalive, what are your research interests, where are you applying, and how are you feeling about the app process? Yesterday was the deadline for most programs (i think?), so we should all take a collective deep breath and celebrate! Arguably, the hardest part is over!
  22. To add to this, one of my letter writers had something come up and anticipated her letter being late for one of my Dec. 1st deadlines, so she wrote to me saying, and I quote “I’ve been doing this for 25 years, the deadline is for you not me.” So, assuming the letter gets in close thereafter, I wouldn’t worry about it. Seems likely committees will not begin reviewing anything until they return from their holidays. But definitely don’t be afraid to push if you feel the response from your writer is not adequate!
  23. I wrapped up my applications last week, just waiting on one or two more recommendations to come through. It was fairly liberating, but also welcomed the dreaded stress of waiting…and through the holidays no less lol. It is interesting that sociology as a discipline may conduct interviews less frequently, although I have seen most of my programs have interviews listed in the results section from previous years. Cross that bridge if and when I get to it though! I am extremely excited to be done with the applications as you said, writing about oneself becomes onerous under these conditions. In the meantime, just eager to hear about everyone else’s progress!! It is notably quieter on this yearly cycle forum than before….
  24. I’m interested in biomedicalization, bio sociology, and queer theories of gender/sexuality and embodiment. In total I have 5 applications. I too would not be able to do my research, or be a researcher, in a space that is anti-LGBTQ+ so I really hope you find the opportunity you are looking for. And that programs will also see that it is warranted! Did you interview at all in your last cycle? If so, what was that like?
