You're in a great place to commute, with Purchase + all NYC schools. Or even New Paltz, if you'd prefer to avoid the traffic. When I was at Dutchess Comm College one of my instructors was doing his MFA at Pratt, commuting down once a week from Rhinebeck - twice what your commuting distance would be. It can be done. You've got plenty of choices within reach. It's just a matter of choosing which one(s) work best for you.
  2. Many Canadian universities fund MA students.
  3. I started out with 6 on my list. added one, dropped 3. one submitted so far; next deadlines are mid-Jan.
  4. Applying to in the US: U Michigan UC Davis Arizona (I was going to apply to Yale, but opted not to) in Canada: Alberta Simon Fraser all the above for History. For Indigenous Studies, possibly Trent. UG GPA: 3.94 History major GPA: 4.0 MA GPA (thus far): 87 (/100) GRE: 650 verbal 790 quant 5.0 analytical writing
  5. It seems unlikely, frankly. It could easily be interpreted as mostly our co-author's work, and it would beg the question of whether you can write anything decent on your own.
  6. there are several reasons why the philosophy paper sounds better: it's current, it sounds better written, it shows development you've experienced since your BA, and you seem more satisfied with it. Length sounds like the only thing in favor of the older paper; quality is better than length (you can always add to the 10-pager, if you need to). you don't tell us what the older paper is about (subject-wise), or which is more suited to your MA program. But in my opinion, a well thought-out philosophy paper should have appeals to almost any Humanities department.
  7. well, it seems that not everyone is getting the announced experimental section; a few people seem to get the hidden experimental section. also, those of us getting the announced version don't get them until the end. Thus you still have to do the regular sections not knowing whether they'll count or not; only with the 4th section might you find out the earlier ones are the real deal. so it doesn't really cut the edge very much, except that you get to relax on the experimental section.
  8. I agree with John. Your other materials will more than make up for it, if you polish them nicely.
  9. I took it in mid Sept. The experimental section was clearly marked at the end. It was optional, with the possible $250 prize, as someone else mentioned. It was a verbal section, with boxes to touch (as I recall) rather than dots to click on. And in some cases, it asked you for the best 2 answers (out of 6).
  10. I've looked into NZ, too. Slim pickings. have you considered a Fulbright?
