  1. most Canadian universities have people TAing in their 1st years. It's manageable, but it can mean an incomplete or two in your own coursework.
  2. Applied to 3, accepted 2, rejected by 1 (see below) chose Simon Fraser (Vancouver).
  3. Anyone else going? More than 1k registered so far. Impressive array of scholars: Angela Davis, Andrea Smith, and many many others. I present on Saturday. http://cesa.ucr.edu/ PS it also strikes me as odd that we don't seem to discuss conferences much on these boards. Let's change that! I wanna hear about yours, too!
  4. I would add that it depends on the situation. Most professors at various institutions I've been do encourage bargaining. In fact, my POI/future supervisor at the U I've chosen had actively encouraged me to do so; with an offer from another place, she could leverage more $ from the dean to + my offer $4k. My advice: sound them out. If they really want you, they may be able to do something.
  5. I prefer small, local banks and credit unions; the big ones tend to be very fee-heavy and not really care about us little people. You may want to ask your supervisor, or ask her/him to put you in touch with current grad students, to see what their experiences are, in terms of local banking options. Some areas will have much more selection than others; unlike some countries not every bank is a nationwide bank. There are small, regional and nationwide banks.
  6. I was accepted there as well, but am going to SFU instead. What's your field? who would you be working with?
  7. yet another Michigan rejection: "After a careful review of your application, we regret to inform you that we cannot extend an offer of admission this year to the PhD program in the Department of History at the University of Michigan. We received over 365 applications for a very limited number of positions, and the final admissions list includes approximately 10 percent of the total applicant pool. The History Department's commitment to providing a multiyear funding package to all admitted students means that many excellent applicants do not receive offers of admission."
  8. I definitely post it! My friends are so far and wide it's the easiest way to share good news. With the exception of a post like "I got into Harvard so I'm better than you all! ha-ha!" I can't see why it would be conceited at all. If anyone takes the sharing of good news as a negative, that's their flaw, not mine.
  9. My field is also Indigenous North American history, by the way.
  10. next round, you may want to consider adding some Canadian schools. There are plenty of good programs up here, and the paperwork isn't so hard for us US citizens. Saskatchewan, UBC, Simon Fraser, Alberta, York and others have solid programs. The main difference is that the MA is almost always a separate program than the PhD; you generally need an MA (or to be almost done with one) to apply for PhD here. But on the plus side, MA programs can be much better funded, and your TA duties and MA can make you a much better prospect for PhD apps (on either side of the border).
  11. If I'd gotten an acceptance to Michigan, I'd be in a similar dilemma (regarding schools t least. not towns or families). I've really hit it off well with my supervisor at Simon Fraser (who is tops in her field), and they've matched my award from another offer. In a weird way I was dreading a UM acceptance, as I'd feel really bad walking away for such good fit for the uncertainties of UM. So in an odd way, I'm relieved not to have been accepted at UM; I'm happy with my Choice A. But it would have felt good to have UM and SFU bargain over me.
  12. I'm starting there in September. Anyone else there, or going to be?
  13. Well, I'll be starting a PhD at SFU in September. Not sure what month I'll move yet, but I'm approachable if someone is interested i sharing. Preferably near SFU or Commercial Drive, but definitely on/near transit routes.
  14. Thanks, but that's too late for me. I have to let SFU know by Tuesday. I told UMich that.... but I guess the only thing in the mail will be a rejection.
  15. You may be able to make it cheaper by baking it into two parts. Amsterdam to NYC can be fairly cheap, whether one-way or open return. And one-way from NY to Minneapolis can be very cheap . Besides NYC, you can also look at Chicago.
  16. I thought about it, but the regular History prog looked better for me (my area is at the junction of Gender, Med/Sci and Native histories). there was a 2010 rejection and a 2008 acceptance in Results lists as well. Keep in mind that relatively few of the total grad student population post here, and fewer use the Results section (I completely overlooked it during my MA app cycle 2 years ago, for instance). With only one History acceptance thus far, it's too early to worry too much yet.
  17. It looks like starting a masters before July will still be tuition-free. And PhD programs will remain free. http://www.studyinsweden.se/Home/News-archive/2010/Tuition-fees-from-2011/
  18. super trooper
  19. Congrats! U of T is a great place! I briefly considered going there for the science/medicine library alone! What's your field?
  20. U MIchigan History dept says... meeting this week they expect to send out emails the following week.
  21. generally, they will let you know what your acceptance deadline is, and give you time to consider it (along with a letter describing your award or lack thereof). A number of US schools seem to have a coordinated deadline date (April 15, I think? Most schools I've dealt with have been Canadian, so I don't know for sure), and there is a list somewhere on here of all the participating schools. In any case, your acceptance message should state, and you can ask on the phone, too. The shortest window I've seen is about 3 weeks. For many, it's more like 1-2 months. But the sooner you get back to them (once you know for sure), you may be helping some other poor waitlisted soul get an answer, too. (Aside: I'll be at UCR for a conference in a couple weeks!)
  22. As tickle says, sometime after the 20th. A while back, I came across a ref to the 20th somewhere online. But looking back on last year's cycle here, it looks like two waves for around Feb 25 and then again on March 1. I need to let SFU know by Feb 28, so I'll be contacting UMich tomorrow. I'll keep everyone posted when I get a response.
  23. accepted at University of Alberta!
  24. illegal substances
