  1. I pretty much know i will not hear anything for another month, so I am aware that all my hopes are pointless throughout the entire day -- haha!
  2. I always use Professor X, but when I was corresponding with a British prof, he signed his e-mails with only his first name, so I get the impression they are less formal there with the names.
  3. If you sulk around Paris in April for 5 days, I will personally come and kick your bootay
  4. I was feeling pretty confident, now I'm veering back to unsure. One more month of this waiting -- it is about all I can take!
  5. Modern Europe, particularly 19th century Italian political/social history.
  6. I would prefer to stay in California, but the number one place for my field is in the east. I realized this weekend that there was one place I could have applied on the west coast, but it's too late now.
  7. I think you should just send an update to your schools and tell them -- I am sure they will want to know!
  8. I'm out of town visiting relatives and friends, so I don't have a lot of time to worry about it. I'll start right back up against on Monday!
  9. Congrats, pikatopia! I was noticing some social science/humanities programs making early decisions too -- interesting! Guess they liked you a lot
  10. i just can't stand this -- I feel like my life is on hold until I know. I think because I'm not in school right now, and I essentially work freelance from home, I am going crazy from not having enough work to do. I think after this weekend I will have to go in search of work in earnest, maybe even more work than I normally would take, just so I am not sitting around waiting for an answer I know will not be forthcoming for at least a month. I miss not doing my academic work too. Oh well -- on Monday I will be jumping full force into the swing of things.
  11. Hehe! Well, I clearly have no willpower, so I will be glued here until I hear!! It's pretty intense, waiting to know what the next decade of your life will or will not be like...
  12. That is part of it, but large, government-funded institutions also simply put up more resistance to change than other types of organizations. I can speak on this from personal experience, having worked for substantial amounts of time in both academic and private sectors since 1991 (yes I am old).
  13. I told myself this morning that since I know I will not hear anything until the end of February, I need to stop thinking about it and stop coming to this site, etc. Of course you know the first site I came to this morning....sigh!
  14. I think it's just because university systems are relatively slow and outdated, since they don't really have to keep pace like business does. They are just a different animal altogether. Probably ad comms couldn't care less how you got them your information, as long as it's accurate. It's the force of combined inefficient administrative organization that makes it an expensive endeavor, IMO.
  15. I read the Chronicle forum a lot, but rarely post! And the applyingtograd community helped me a lot with my SOP.
  16. I don't have any safeties either -- there is one school in the country that specializes in my field, and the other would be a good but not exact fit. So, it's those or nothing!
  17. You should start thinking about what will happen if you don't get in anywhere. Not that I'm saying that will happen, but you should be prepared in case it does, and decide what you would do then. It's nothing to be ashamed of, nor would it make you look like a loser or actually be one -- you just have to figure out what part(s) of your application wasn't working for people, and then work to change those things for the next application cycle. It wouldn't be the end of the world, nor a negative statement about your worthiness as a human being, if you didn't get in to any of the places you applied this year.
  18. I only applied to two schools, and from the results history, they are remarkably consistent in when they start making the calls. So, I pretty much know I'll have to sit tight until the end of February.
  19. I get happy when I see more people hearing, because that means I may be next
  20. That's weird -- they should have sent you a copy of your score report when they sent it to your schools...you should call them!
  21. Well, I guess if they were missing something they would contact you, so you are probably okay
  22. Well, I had one of my schools actually tell me to contact them after such and such a date to make sure they have everything they need. I e-mailed them and the other school, and got back confirmation. You could e-mail the graduate program secretaries and tell them you're just checking in to make sure they have everything they need.
  23. Awww, that sucks! Well, I only applied to two schools, so I just had to check those and that was it.
