Do not worry. Funnily enough, yesterday I also decided to go over the writing sample I sent to ALL my schools. I discovered something I did not want to discover at all. As Bhikhaari, we all wish we could change something in our applications. If you think the typos you made can actually influence the admissions officers' decision on whether you are 'in' or 'out', sure, call the department, ask to change.

Right. Makes perfect sense! As I've said I don't know much about this. Just said what I thought. I personally never came across 'Religion' on any of my applications. Or Sexual Orientation for that matter. Race - yes, on probably all of them, and it was an optional field. Funnily enough, my religion probably (1) contributed to my current academic interests; (2) is somewhat relevant to what I want to study.

I, obviously, don't know. But if I were to express my opinion on this I'd say that I do not see how this could play any role in admissions. Also, would one state his/her faith in SOP? I just immediately think of many academics who would find something like this very strange, if not disturbing (unless stating your faith is somehow linked to your academic/research experience and therefore is justified). SOP is not a diversity statement.

Statement of Purpose's length
Bukharan replied to acornrawr's topic in Statement of Purpose, Personal History, Diversity
I agree with Adaptations, they state the maximum amount of words/characters not the optimum one. If you do not wish to write so much, it is your right! So don't worry! -
You could check out this similar thread: I believe the consensus lies somewhat along the lines: It is up to you. There is no evidence that listing other schools may have negative impact on your chances. Many people, however, tend not to disclose this information to universities.

I am reading the blog you mentioned right now, and the author is brilliant!

It is a funny mistake. I made a similar one, which I better do not describe here. I am still embarrassed by that e-mail I sent. But yeah... you overthink. It is probably not that big of a deal. If (!) she notices the mistake, she will probably laugh about it. You can try call the admissions office and ask them what the procedure about changing one word in your SOP was. If it can be done discreetly and quickly, go for it!

You should get your results on screen next week. Don't worry.

My personal opinion is that your stats are good. Your verbal GRE is very good. Don't worry about the 'numerical' aspect of your application.

Funding is a big issue here, true. Not only for international applicants but also for the UK and EU students. Yet there is not much but there is some! Try look up the faculty interests in Oxford, Cambridge, St Andrews and wherever else they are big on medieval stuff. If you find someone who is a perfect fit for your work and he/she gets interested in you, getting funding will become much easier. Departments in big universities sometimes do produce funding packages out of the blue when their website says 'nada'. OK. This is a controversial point.

As you said yourself, it is yet another post of whether one is competitive. No one knows better than yourself. What else is there in your CV? Do you have research experience? Languages? What are you research interests and do they fit with the faculty in Princeton, Duke etc.? From the information you provided, sure, you are competitive. It is the edge over the others you need to be distinguished from a pool of others almost all of whom will have GPA > 3.6 and GRE > 1200.

Have you thought of doing a Ph.D. in medieval history in the UK? If you manage to get full funding, getting a doctorate is much faster here and *arguably* it would be easier to switch the subjects. No?

thank you notes for letter writers

Yeah, I was wondering as well. -
I doubt anyone can answer this question definitively. The procedure probably differs depending on a school, subject, the faculty present, the year. I've heard from my supervisor that once the application makes it to the department after the Graduate School scrutiny (all documents in place; GRE received etc.), the faculty first and foremost reads SOPs.

5.0 AW currently stands at 84% indeed.

This is a bizarre situation but do not worry too much over it. You still have time - you haven't submitted your SOPs yet. Change that paragraph and all will hopefully be well. It does not really matter what she wrote in her LORs and in what terms she described you - there is absolutely nothing you can change! So focus on improving your application and do not worry! There is no point worrying when you can't do much, right? If that helps, I'd say she meant well. She DID submit those 10 LORs. If she wanted to hurt your admissions chances/ genuinely disliked you, she would have refused to write LORs for you in the first place. Yet she did - in her own way - but she did! It is perfectly normal to worry over such things. I spent the entire day trying to figure out on what 'side' of my academic field one of my supervisors was: was he rightist? leftist? what is his reputation in that particular department I am applying to? ... but really there is nothing we can do after the documents are in the system! So why worry - we better get a drink and salute ourselves for our efforts!
-
This sounds like a tough situation. I suggest you do everything as it should be done - be polite and respectful in all e-mails you send - and keep track of everything in case you need to present those e-mails later. There is not much else you can do in this situation. Show the best side of yourself! She is probably not the only one responsible for admissions so you do have a shot if you really want this.

Balderdash, I feel your pain. I hope all has been sorted and in time for the deadline!
