  1. It's all about flash cards! You can learn hundreds of words using flashcards in the space of a couple of weeks. Make sure you are well-trained as to how the test is structured and what the rules of each type of question are, and you should do fine.
  2. I actually had a brief chat with Sandy Bernstein, who organizes the SDSU/UCSD joint PhD program. He was commenting on how incredibly competitive his program is, let alone the UCSD program itself. He's a very pleasant man and was very kind to speak to me about applications! My supervisor is a close collaborator of his.
  3. Good point.. damn this whole network business. Here in the UK all contracts have lots of "anytime, any network" minutes so the only consideration when choosing a network is purely the contracts on offer. Looks like data is a lot more expensive on Verizon though.. I'll have to see when I get there. If WiFi is fairly abundant then I'll just use that instead of 3G.
  4. I haven't actually heard back from Brandeis at all, it's UVM I'm waiting to hear from. But thanks anyway!
  5. I'm not sure what's worse.. waiting for an initial reply, or waiting for an admissions decision after interview. I can't focus on work at all, I should be writing my project report.
  6. Well.. Verizon and ATT.
  7. Answering my own question here, but a little googling brought this up: http://news.prnewswire.com/ViewContent. ... 264&EDATE= Great stuff! Now, if only ATT had some reasonably priced plans...
  8. I just stumbled upon some blog posts talking about how Vermont has poor cell coverage, and no 3G coverage. Could someone please clarify what the current situation is, and whether things will improve before this Fall?
  9. I had a phone interview with the CMB program yesterday, I think it went well and I'm really excited about going there! I really hope they accept me. It was supposed to be a safety app for me but right now I feel like it was one of my top choices all along. There are so many labs I would want to rotate in, I think I will actually have trouble choosing just 3/4.
  10. Got rejected by UMichigan and UVA, and have a phone interview with UVM next week. Frankly I wasn't too excited about Ann Arbor or Charlottesville, so I'm not that bothered by the rejections. Hopefully my UVM interview will go well because I really like both the place and the university, and my interests are really close to the research they do there. Also, there's still UT and Brandeis left to hear back from, and I'm confident they will be replying by the end of this week since all the other schools replied this week.
  11. Just got notified by UVM about a phone interview next week for the CMB program!
  12. I've got no acceptances yet so there's no decision to be made... It's weird though, my current project is really going a little TOO well and I'm thinking that if I'm considering my career, the wisest thing to do would be to stay here and finish this thing, at least for another year. It would also make my app stronger so I'd be able to get into the school I want if I re-apply next year. That is of course considering my supervisor has funding for me for a year. I haven't spoken to him yet because if he says he will fund me then I will be really tempted to accept his offer, which makes this whole app season worthless for me. Right now I think if I got acceptances from UT or UMichigan, I will probably accept them. If it's Brandeis, UVM or UVA I will have a tough time choosing between them and staying here, although I think the prospect of having guaranteed funding for the next 5 years is something I would be stupid to pass on considering the state of the economy.
  13. Mayo reject! Who would have thought I'd be glad to get a rejection? Basically this and the fact that Michigan is meant to be replying this week suggests to me that all the other schools are likely to reply this week as well, which is fantastic. Didn't want to go to Mayo anyway, it doesn't look to me like a good environment to be a grad student. I'm sure it's a fantastic place to set up a lab and do cutting edge research but grad students probably don't have an amazing time there, at least not comparably to a University grad school.
  14. Wow, that's kind of creepy, you searched for my posts to see where I've complained? Of course I've complained. But I had the sense to apply to a range of schools and actually give myself some form of a fair shot at this. Ok, maybe my comment was mean, I'm not sure what you're trying to prove other than that, however (and it seems you are). I'm not interested in any sort of "flame war", but I just wanted to recognize that my comment was perhaps not worded properly (although the idea behind it still stands). BigCheese never said he had a financial problem that did not allow him to apply to other schools. If he did, then I would say he could have spent his money more wisely. I would actually be interested to hear how "In some fields applying for a safety school doesn't actually make that much sense".
  15. Maybe you shouldn't have applied to such high tier universities? Don't want to be mean but you don't really have a right to complain unless you've bothered applying to "safeties" and have been rejected by even those.
  16. Not a word from Brandeis, although apparently they can be quite erratic with this.
  17. "How long will we wait for TGC to come back online?" "As long as we have to."
  18. Yeah I think I'm getting myself a bottle of Patron for when i get an acceptance or when I get rejected by the last school.
  19. Yeah it really annoys me when people do this. Especially if they happen to be people who secured a place in their top choice months ago. I'd rather they just said "I have no idea what you are going through" and bought me a drink.
  20. I got my rejection ages ago at the pre-app stage (for international students only). I never submitted an application.
  21. I just saw someone add to the Results section that they received their rejection from this program by postal service. Was your status on the website also updated? And which address did they send it to, your permanent or current address? Also what is your background and profile like?
  22. Applied to UVM but haven't heard back... Could you let me know how your interview goes? The place sounds really nice but for some reason you are the first person I've found who is also applying there. Which program at UVM btw? I applied to Cell & mol bio.
  23. UVA eh? Did you get interviewed or was it a straight acceptance? Do you know whether they looked at international applicants simultaneously?
  24. It's beginning to get almost painful. I've been waiting for SO long. I wish they would all just reject me so that I can get on with my life already.
  25. Neglected, feel like I'm cut into 2, or bisected... Murray has been so amazing this season. I love this show! Too many dicks on the dance floor...
