  1. Thats an amazing sign, it means you've made it to the second stage (100% sure). The larger countries that have their own Fulbright Comission i.e. Egypt often request additional documents. Some other countries want the application translated in the language (I think this is the case for Germany). What you have to remember is that the applications (that made it through the first round) are send as they are approved. So if they reviewed Egypt applications in December, thats when they send it. But to keep it uniform they let everyone know on January 24th. For the most part, the Fulbright people are nice and give you slight hints that you are getting the grant. But you recieving this information DEFINATELY means you have made it through the first round! Congrads!
  2. Its funny last time when I applied, I had people calling the program manager asking them when will the country post their admits. The program manager definately knows my name by heart!
  3. I have a feeling that emails will o out Friday. Their style is usually to send things on Friday. I would bet on anything that we will receive emails then. So anxious!
  4. Just called Walter Jackson, here's the gist of our convo: Me: I saw that the date had been changed from the 31st to the 24 is this true? Jackson: Yea, we are trying to mail things out this week. Me: This week? Don't you mean the 24th? Jackson: Whats the date on th website say? Me: The 24th. Jackson: Well, "watch your mail" and Good luck. Now I'm confused, since he is saying they will be mailing out things this week. Can anyone call Fulbright and confirm?
  5. You guys are right, i just checked the embark link and noticed that the NEW INSTRUCTIONS were posted on January 18, 2011. I would recommend the people near NY check their emails in the AM, thats when I got my email in 2009. Im happy they moved the deadline closer, the 31st was looking to be a long time! Good luck...
  6. This is true considering that in the 30th is even worse...Some countries are late in sending in their selections..but even worse is being an alternate, the equivalent of Limbo
  7. FYI::: I believe that this year we will receive Email notification regarding Finalist Status on January 28th than the 30th. The 30th is a Sunday this year and I doubt that they will be open. If you look at last year's post, the majority recieved their notifications on Friday and the rest throughout the weekend. Make sure you guys have a good relationship with your Campus Fulbright Advisor, maybe they can give you the good/bad news early, since they know 1 day before. However, January 30th is only the beginning. The most stress comes between late March and April where some countries are late in their response. GET READY FOR THE ROLLERCOASTER!
  8. If you guys have any questions PM me, because I have been through this before
  9. What to expect next! On January 30th, your Fulbright advisor at your school will have a list of finalist. However, in the AM on January 31st you will be emailed a letter notifying you if you are a finalist or not. This is how the letter looks like. DEAR ________________, I am pleased to inform you that the National Screening Committee of the Institute of International Education (IIE) has recommended you for a grant under the Fulbright U.S. Student Program for the academic year 2011-12. Your application has been forwarded to the supervising agency abroad for final review. In addition, your application will be forwarded to the program sponsor, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State, for transmittal to the presidentially appointed J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB). The FSB makes final decisions on Fulbright awards.
  10. My interview in 09 was great because I was basically interviewed by my advisor along with two other faculty members in other disciplines. The most important thing to remember is that the interview is basically a way for the school to write you a recommendation letter. The fact they are working with you is a sign that they want you to get it, so there is no way they would jeapordize that with a horrible letter of rec. However, your interview can introduce additional elements that may make the letter of rec. better than it would have been if they didn't meet you and ask you questions. Do not be nervous about it, instead just think of all the things that you want them to know about you and your application, so that they can include it in the letter. I have my interview at my new school tomorrow and supposedly 13 faculty members and chairs of depts. are supposed to show up. Now to anyone that would be nervewrecking, but somehow to me it isn't. The way I prepare is how am I going to explain my project to a group of people who have read it and want to make the best comments about it. The best things to do is highlight how you were born to do this sort of research, and that you have extensively planned each and every way that it could go wrong, and how will you account for it. Good luck everyone. P.S This process is the least nerve-wrecking part of the fulbright, wait until January and April. I am sure most of you will remember Fulbright telephone numbers and repeadetly call them 24/7 asking if you got it or not. Always remember that this process makes us all stronger. GOOD LUCK!
  11. Just got my second affiliation letter today...I submit the letters in a PDF formatt, its not much trouble. Waiting for my language eval and two more letters of recommendations and I wont be thinking about this bad boy for quite some time. The hard part about this process is that you are told you are a finalist and then have to way 4 or five months, to see if you've been selected. This time I am not going to care either way. Just get this application out and not think about it until January.
  12. Just some info that comes to mind...if you are selected as a Finalist, the Selection Comittee in the US sends 1.5x more than the number of grants given. For example, if country x gives out 2 award, the Comittee recommends 4...However, the comittee also ranks them, so John is #1, Jane #2, Lucifer #3 and so on. I think that some countries just take the ranking of US, especially if they are a small country. All of you who are applying for the Fulbright and want to conduct some sort of interviews and surveys, make sure that you state that you are getting Human Subjects approval form your university IRB, or else they will not accept you, since they want to make sure that you will protect the participants... If i get any more flashbacks I'll let you guys know. P.S This is a stressful journey, because you don't find out for sure until late April
  13. Looking for someone to critique my personal statement...any takers PM me...in return i'll read ures..PM me
  14. I have delved into a lot more research and am more prepared to carry it out. I think that the Fulbright comitte might have saw that my project might have been a little too ambiious with some gaps in methodlogy. I also think they give preference to graduate students when it comes to empirical research especially in the social sciences, wheras they are not too concerned about former undergrads doing manuscipt work or some other ethnographic research P.S My project was on examining the differences between Urban and Rural Domestic violence, but I think I might change it to cigarette smuggling

  16. Scholarships:Fulbright Albania

PhD: UCI, UPenn, Rutgers, SUNY-Albany, UMD, UIB

  17. I was an alternate for 2009...I am in graduate school now, so hopefully I'll have a stronger case...
  18. Well the country that I applied to was Albania. The previous year only 5 had applied for 2 spots. It happened that the year that I applied there there were 12 for 3 spots. It seemed as if most of the applicants were studying something of cultural value, while I applied to study Domestic violence. When I found I was an Alternate was beginning of May and I was torn between waiting and finding a job. Some countries you hear earlier and other take a long time. The most important advice I could give is to be really detailed in your purpose of study. There should not be a sentence that is filler. I would suggest writing 5 pages and cutting it down to two pages, to really be specific. What are you going to study How With who why do you need to be in that country Time frame of study When I applied I had two letters of affiliation from big names in research, but that didn't help. I think what hurt me was that I was born in Albania, and I guess they wanted to send someone who had never been there. But prepared to face some hard competition with some extraordinary people. Search through all of the projects that have ever been granted, look people's names on facebook and send them some questions. Last but not least: Most countries love to hear from US scholars, if you have trouble reaching people have your professors send an email stating that they have a student who is interested in working with them. Most of the people I have emailed are thrilled to have researchers who they do nt have to worry about funding and who might actually contribute to something.
  19. I am back on the Fulbright wagon after being selected an Alternate to Albania..What a long ride that was...I hope all of you have a lot of patience, because it is a long ride
  20. Hey! I am currently a Masters student at CUNY and am wondering what my chances for a PhD program are at SUNY ALBANY, RUTGERS, INDIANA,UCI and CINCINATTI: A)UGPA: 3.7 B)Master's GPA: 3.94 C)1 co-author publication in a Communication journal D)4 Presentations at conferences (2 as a co-author and 2 as the primary author at the ACJS, ASC, and ESS E)TA for Research Methods class F)Work as a Research Assistant at a Substance Abuse facility (1 year) **I will hopefully have 2 additional publications in a criminal justice journal by this January (but probably right after the admission deadlines) After I graduated from my undegrad, I applied to Rutgers but was rejected and the primary reason being that my GRE was 1000. I have not had time to study for the GRE so I can guess that its only going to be a 1090 at best.
  21. hey guys, 2 weeks ago I recieved a call from IEE saying that they have a ETA spot opened and if I'd be interested, and of course I said yes. Holskng told me should would contact me by the middle of the week. I called and then she got mad and said "you don't have to call, I'll call you" Two weeks has passed and no phone calls. I am tempted to call but she sounded angry last time. Do you think that the reason she hasn't called because the funding didn't go through. What do you think I should do? I remember her sayng she was 70% sure that funding would go through. When my adviser called her last week to check on my status her response was "she wasn't allowed to say." If anyone has any ideas or experiences please share because I need some advice
  22. does anyone know when funding usually becomes available?
  23. has anyone here been called by fulbright and asked if theyd considered doing an ETA or studying in another country? I am waiting for poissible funds to be allocated so instead of being a full grant I would be doing an ETA..either or I WILL DO RESEARCH!
  24. how much does brazil get monthly?
  25. I heard the grant is the same amount for researchers and ETA's
