  4. Anyone fill out brackets? I have UNC, Louisville, Memphis, and Pittsburgh getting to the Final Four, UNC beating Louisville 83-81. What does everyone else have?

  6. Anyone else becoming a Jayhawk grad?
  7. I just got accepted to Univ of Kansas. Due to my low uGPA, they can't offer me the TA first semester, have to get a 3.0 first semester to get it. It's only for four months, so I'm going to take out loans for it, so initially money is not as big of a factor for me!
  8. Guh, the last 10 minutes made my brain hurt. Sorry for the caps yelling but: WHO IS GOOD, BEN OR CHARLES?
  9. She might want to look in Durham and Orange counties, I know Wake county has a hiring freeze right now (for school positions, that is).

    Heroes?

I LOVE Heroes. Part of me died when Hiro lost his power. I want to see Sylar go up against the govt people again. Sylar is just so cool when he's fighting people and just being so calm about it. Plus I loved Psycho Killer being played on the car radio last week.
  11. Bumping up this thread because I have a general exclamation: Yay, I got my Kansas interview itinerary. Day 1 is getting picked up at the airport by a grad student then dinner with all grad students. Day 2 begins with a tour, then applicant seminars (I am the first of 3). Then interviews with 2 professors, lunch, 3 more professors then half an hour with the office manager (I'm taking that as a very good sign). Then get brought back to the airport. Going to be busy. Oh, and got rejected from WashU.
  12. I think the joke is: If you're young and are not a Democrat, then you just don't care. If you're old and are not a Republican, then you just aren't smart.
  13. Here's what I think: when it comes to issues that aren't morality based (such as taxes, diplomacy and such), then decide based upon common sense. Example with illegal immigrants: if you're here, stay as long as you don't cause trouble. Cause trouble and you're going home. If businesses can't regulate themselves and they get the economy into a shit-hole, then the government, AS a representative of the people, needs to step in and put up some rules. Now, I don't like the government picking and choosing companies to just give money, but I do like the idea of the government creating projects that will create jobs for individuals and jobs for companies to fill. It's the difference between parents giving their kids an allowance and parents giving their kids an allowance for completing their chores. And everyone who has been complaining about how Congress has been running lately: remember folks, the majority elected them, and they really are supposed to follow their constituents. If they aren't following the majority of those who they represent, maybe something there needs to be changed! Check your laws and remember who hasn't done what the majority wants when elections come again! Those who will not lift a finger to try and change the current situation for the better cannot complain when something goes a way they do not like. When it comes to things that are morally-gray, then I believe in letting people make their own choice. Everyone has their own religious and spiritual perspective and I see it as being wrong to force one's own religious and spiritual beliefs onto someone else. If you see abortion as being wrong, then you see abortion as being wrong. That doesn't mean that Sally Smith over there is doing something wrong by getting an abortion, in her religious/spiritual perspective the fetus may not be a living individual. If in the end it was wrong, then Sally Smith will have to atone for that. But that does not give anyone else the right to judge her.
  14. I sit in a room filled with books, give me a diploma!
  15. Same here. It's grant season, but I find it funny that my PI is so heavily staring over my shoulder for a figure for his grant that starts paying out after I know I will be gone.
  16. 11. Teach yourself how to make random pieces of leather (or steel, if you have the money!) armor 12. Knit chainmail 13. Reread Lord of the Rings 14. Watch every episode of Stargate SG1 in order 15. Read through the archives of reallifecomics.com, ctrlaltdel-online.com, penny-arcade.com, threepanelsoul.com, xkcd.com, phdcomics.com, and icanhascheezburger.com
  17. Good morning and Happy Monday everyone! May this week bring more news to those who have news and bring the first notifications to those who haven't!
  18. Carrboro is bike-friendly, there are coffee shops everywhere, and the Cat's Cradle is one of many musical venues. People in Carrboro are ex-hippies, much of the student areas of Chapel Hill are liberal neighborhoods (although stay away from Northside, drug area), and it's labeled the Republic of Chapel Hill because it's so different from the rest of the area. There is the RTP crowd, a bunch of office people and researchers. Unless you live in one of the small towns, outside of Chapel Hill-Carrboro, most people will just leave others alone. I know in Chapel Hill-Carrboro there's a lot of, how best to put it, sexual freedom. It's been labeled by Gary Birdsong (the "Pit Preacher") as an enclave of evil in which we are all going to Hell because of the HO-MO-SEXUALS! (as he puts it as he randomly points into the crowd with his Bible). But ignore Gary and the other preachers, they're there to drum up discussion and excitement.
  19. Just need some ice. Ooo, or some Jameson's instead of Jack
  20. No, the 8917 is for enrolled students paying tuition and fees, not application costs and GRE costs and such
  21. ...I would wear a hot dog suit to the interview if they asked me to. ...I would eat a tube of wasabi. ...I would do any experiment asked of me with a smile.
