It is the chair of the Fine Arts department. This particular one asked full time faculty to chime in if they wished to.

I was just talking about this with the director of a school ranked #2. His impression (having acted as faculty and chair at most of these pedigree schools) is that this year you can clearly see that the schools that inaugurated “new genres” “kinetic” and “digital media” programs 5-10 years ago (when they didn’t use to be considered “fine arts” per se) are carrying the relevance of these rankings. In his opinion, art departments are going to survive only if they can adapt to the discourses that the era of hyper-mediation and fascism. Otherwise “their bubble is just going to fly further and further away from the world”. I don’t know if I agree since I don’t have his perspective having been in all these places, but I see that most of these schools’ poster-children are very concerned with what he is talking about and making work that responds to it—VCU Kinetic Arts and Sculpture and Expanded Media, Yale as a whole has a “common” department that is essentially a Media Art, UCLA has New Genres and DMA, CMU’s basically promotes itself as Digital Media, and RISD’s spearhead is Digital + Media.

One conclusion from this round is that most “prestigious” schools—Columbia, Bard, NYU, SAIC, UPenn, SVA, CalArts, Tyler, Cranbrook, etc have huuuuge turnovers and accept almost all of their waitlists. Hope someone in the future isn’t lured to pay 50k+ for a degree only for its apparent prestige and only does so if it is materially viable and a good fit. Peace out! Edit: I am going to Hunter!

not in a great place, and we all know only rich kids go—even those who take out loans are rich. Also, a bit of tone deafness is needed to seriously consider giving money you don’t have to such an evil institution

that is their way of waitlisting—ghosting until a spot opens. Columbia seems like a hard place to get into but if you were interviewed chances are you will get offered a slot before mid-april. They enroll 4-5 students per discipline but actually “accept” most their interviewees.

interview is not required for UCLA––but cases of direct acceptance are almost miraculous.

half tuition and said I could apply for paid positions for a stipend—I turned them down this morning since I heard from Bard (great NYC network without the high cost, but would still cost me 5k per summer) which I honestly prefer to Columbia. But still waiting on Hunter since that or RISD (full-merit fellowship) are my preferred route.

That's incredible! I heard that program has gotten incredibly popular (6-8% get in, 12-14 enroll). I got rejected last year after interview (even though I work at RISD's admin) and secretly wish I was there now.

during my unofficial acceptance call, they said moving image photo and new genres (maybe they meant expanded practice) were being called that week

My friend got an informal acceptance email a couple weeks after the interview. Not the norm, but if your medium is not painting or sculpture, they may have sent informal acceptance already. Definitely don’t loose hope though. There are documented cases of ppl who got in without one and even without an interview

nooo they mentioned the second interview was for a particular fellowship but not related to admission

for RISD the second is not mandatory, but they did mention they do second interviews for their highest fellowships. Columbia was just one although I did receive the call two weeks ago saying I was in. So far silence with RISD.

I did for photo! It was brutal indeed, even tougher than Columbia and RISD (for which I did 2 interviews)
