have you received any interviews for 2011 fall
MoJingly replied to Wenwen Jiang's topic in Waiting it Out
It depends on the school. Try looking under the "results" section above. Type in the name of your school and the program to see when other applicants have heard. -
Tufnel, that video made me smile. I forgot about how entertaining that movie is!

I honestly never cease to be amazed by the caliber of students on this forum. You guys are seriously awesome! ^ I'm sure that's not true!!

Did I sink my chances at a decent math program?
MoJingly replied to laupow21's topic in Applied Sciences & Mathematics
Gee, I'm not a math major either. But I would have killed for a GRE score like that. I know that's not much help, but I can't figure that a quant score like that will hurt you, especially considering your GPA. -
This just in: It was my mother.

Sure! I want to know what people will find if they search for me. Academia must know when I am the one performing the search, though, because I only seem to get an email if the search was performed at a different IP address. Does anybody know how this works?
-
I got my first email this morning from Academia telling me that somebody searched for me on Google. They entered my name and my city. I would by lying if I said I didn't think that was sort of... creepy.

What's the story behind your avatar or username?
MoJingly replied to katerific's topic in Waiting it Out
This is awesome. There are some pretty incredible people on this forum. The avatar is a picture I drew a few years ago. I was feeling a little bit like that tree: overwhelmed and ill-equipped to hold up everything I needed to. Kind of like how I feel in this application process... I have no idea where my name came from. It just popped out! -
need advice on mistake I made last semester
MoJingly replied to greysquirrel's topic in Officially Grads
I agree. Advisors are people too -
Hi Squiddles, welcome! I graduated a year early but then spent a year working on a research project. This gave me the time to contemplate what I really wanted to do and prepare myself for the application season. Applications can really take a lot out of you, and it may be hard to give them your best attention if graduating a year early (of course, it completely depends on how much you can handle!) I don't think grad schools will look at you negatively because you are young. The content of your application is what counts. I would approach this question from a more personal matter. Are YOU ready? Do YOU know what you want? If you are positive that you want to get to grad school asap, then go for it. It's up to you. I am very happy with my decision to graduate early and then take a year doing research. I have centered myself in this past year and am ready to set out to do what I want. I would suggest it to anybody. It seems like a lot of applicants now take a gap year or two. You are in an interesting situation in that, if you decide to take a year, you will still be entering grad school "on time." In regard to your academic path, decide what you want to do. Read publications from professors you might want to work with. (FYI, extracurriculars aren't that important in a PhD application) In regard to your personal path, please understand that there is no rush to go to grad school. It's a huge commitment, so make sure it is what you really want, especially after only three years of college! Good luck : )

When do in-person interviews happen?
MoJingly replied to coffeecoffeebuzzbuzz's topic in Interviews and Visits
Do you think it is disadvantageous in the admission process to interview later rather than sooner? For example, would an early-Feb interview be less helpful than a late-Jan? Maybe it varies by school? Just wondering... -
I started painting and revamping my old hobby of writing very short poems: I just applied to grad school, my applications now are done But the waiting and the hoping Are certainly no fun!

I looked to my left. I immediately and fervently wished that I'd looked to my right. There was a large green tree. Its branches looked contorted from the wind, but there wasn't even a breeze. A single, luscious pear hung from the highest branch. Unfortunately for my starving stomach, the trunk of the tree was crawling with enormous spiders. Undaunted, I reached for the pear, and upon grazing it with my fingertips, it turned black, shriveled on the vine, and released a pungent cloud of milky smoke. "What the ...?!" - I thought and woke up. To my dismay, I discovered that the pungent cloud of milky smoke existed even in the waking world--at least, I reflected while pulling on my pants, the enormous spiders were gone. An old man puffing a hefty cigar stared over me and muttered coarsely, "it's time." I knew this was the moment I would have to pass the test and complete my training or else I would become a failure. I donned my imaginary superhero outfit, musty and faded, and headed to the front door.

In the wake of the ever-popular "Keep a Word, Drop a Word" thread, let's write a story, adding one sentence at a time. Anybody up for this? Maybe we will create a wonderful work of literature and all become famous. : ) I'll start things off... I looked to my left.

Beautiful! Yes, for sure, PhDs are very easy now. Practically everybody gets them and it's very easy to get into programs. That's why they have entire web forums and communities for people to support each other in this process. Some people are ignorant. Even people with Ivy League degrees.

i dont know how i should go about doing this...
MoJingly replied to MegMill's topic in Waiting it Out
It certainly is worth a try! If she doesn't respond, I would ignore my original advice about contacting the professors at this time. I think strangefox is right on this one. : ) Keep us posted! -

MoJingly replied to MegMill's topic in Waiting it Out
I would contact them. Why not? Give them a heads up that you have sent in an application and are looking forward to learning even more about their work. Networking is always good. In the process, you will probably end up learning even more about the school. Keep in mind, of course, that with the holidays responses may be delayed and even scarce. -
Tired of people asking if I got in...in December
MoJingly replied to sputnik's topic in Waiting it Out
Chances are that none of us are the most qualified candidate. I heard once that you can only improve yourself by surrounding yourself with people better than you. Is that true? Who knows. What I DO know is that surrounding myself with people better than me AFTER I have hit "submit" just makes me a nervous wreck. I think I have actually managed to exhaust myself more than anybody else possibly could. First panicked thought in the morning: "wait, what's the date?! oh, it's still december. But that means I'm getting closer to finding out!" Then again, I have surrounded myself with professors and current grad students who understand how stressful this time is. They don't ask when I will be hearing from my schools, and I am thankful for that. -
I understand this. I did my undergrad in music but am now applying to science PhD programs. I've pretty much decided that music never leaves you and, if needed, you will always find time to make it a part of your life.

I agree?

This literally made me laugh out loud. And I'm at work...

Wow. That's true! There just seems to be a lot that doesn't make sense here. So he got into the program. Fine. But didn't professors and classmates realize that his work was plagiarized? It just seems like Universities are so sensitive to that topic nowadays. And why didn't anybody realize that this kid's resume didn't really match up with his personal interactions? He must have been a good actor too.
