  1. Officially rejected at Duke...oh well.
  2. From your fingers to god's ears.
  3. Isnt Chicago known for advanced formal theory?
  4. Isnt Chicago known for advanced formal theory?
  5. Yeah, I'm more than willing to help you out if you are interested. I would wait until you get all your responses though -- no need to stress over nothing if you get an acceptance along the way!
  6. Nothing official has come out. I was told I would have to wait at least a week or two before we heard anything official from the department, so I wouldn't worry. Moreover, they're closed today for President's day, so I definitely wouldn't expect to hear anything today.
  7. It means that at the moment, you are more than welcome to attend, but we will not give you a cent to-do-so...however, if the funds open up, we may do that.
  8. GRE scores matter much more or Ph.D. programs than they do for master's programs...
  9. Come on guys, no need to fight. Schools will get back to us soon enough.
  10. I'm not sure if that should be a compliment or an insult, but I'm glad to help out as I can.
  11. Some are, but the vast majority are not. UC System and Stanford ARE closed for classes. It varies as to whether this is also an administrative holiday. Some places will close classes but keep offices open. So overall, don't expect much from UC or Stanford, but everything else is fair game.
  12. UPenn is open on President's day.
  13. Stanford is closed for President's Day.
  14. This will be a slower week.
  15. For those of you waiting on Duke, all final decisions have been sent to the graduate school. In other words, all rejections will be posted soon. Sorry guys Take some solace in the fact that Duke got beat by Boston College last night and will fall in the rankings today.
  16. Making a determination on age would be illegal, especially if you are worried that you are too old to start in academia...
  17. This is true, but I think it means two things: 1. Decisions will be done no later than Friday. 2. Rumors of how behind the adcomm are could be slightly overblown, perhaps to lower expectations of hearing news by a certain date. Either way, I certainly hope that they are able to finish by Friday. I do not want to wait until March to hear from one of my top schools.
  18. In a normal year, Michigan would be getting back to people early this week. Too bad that this is not a normal year... EDIT: Although Michigan's spring break is next week. I would imagine the adcomm has incentive to finish by then since faculty often have plans to leave during that week, which would essentially postpone decisions to about a week before the visit...
  19. RE: Rejections, It just takes a lot of work and there isn't a lot of payoff for the department to get it done.
  20. I agree with this overall, but expect: UNC UCLA Northwestern Indiana ***HARVARD***? Last week of Feb, we'll add: Michigan Harvard Princeton Columbia MIT And I'm expecting my record to go from 4-1-1 to 4-6-1 by the middle of this week. Unfortunately, lots of rejections will be coming out soon
  21. I've been told by two sources that UNC is done. Whether or not we will hear back today is a different story. If not today, expect the first part of next week...
  22. I would second this advice. Political theory is a great field and I find the work produced by theorists to be insightful, interesting, and extremely well-crafted (in fact, I once wanted to be a theorist before I moved into comparative work), but it is a LONG-HARD road and you will need to hit the ground running. Get into the best program possible and work with the BEST theorists. Work hard and get published and then apply EVERYWHERE when you get to the market stage. Lines in political theory are hard to find and they aren't getting additional funding. Think of this sector of our field more like an english or a philosophy department rather than a social science department. You have to be the best to get hired, and even then, you need to be lucky. I'm not saying don't do it, but do it fully educated. Plisar
  23. ^ I'm guessing Stanford is the top choice right now?
  24. ^ Yes they do, Chicago is having money problems.
