Almost anything other than me seeing a rejection posted on the results page here, and signing into the Web site to see my own rejection. No e-mail or communication from the department (it's been weeks at this point). Thanks. Not only did I pay $100 to apply to your school for application fees, GRE scores and shipping materials, as well as the time to work on my application - and the department doesn't even have the decency to notify me that I was rejected? Forget that.

1. Meet and talk with other graduate students: in your cohort, in your department, in the university. Students in earlier cohorts are some of the best resources for questions you have

I was wondering the same thing...I applied for soc of ed phd and I also got the e-mail today I sent in my application this afternoon after getting it! Funding is funding (and also happens to align with my research interests a bit!)
-
Thanks for the info konjurer! I should've guessed there was a fb group, lol. But seriously, the info helped calm the anxiety a bit
-
just curious if anyone here also applied for Soc of Ed in the Teachers College? Any word on PhD from them yet (I've seen masters on the results, but nothing for PhDs)?
-
I've seen some results for the Soc of Ed program posted on the board recently, and I was wondering if their results status came in the same way (e-mail followed by logging into apply yourself and results)? I applied to the PhD program, and I still haven't heard anything...and no link on the application page

I'm a soc major and wondering the same thing!! ack!
-
Ack! Was the interview you had mostly about "why soc?" like you thought it might be? Or talking more about your research interests, etc.? (if you feel like sharing )

Bringing fiancee to visits
readyforachange replied to michigantrumpet's topic in Decisions, Decisions
In the past, people in my current program have brought their SOs with them for the weekend, but left him/her to do their own exploration during the day when meeting with faculty and the more formal events. However, we also have an informal grad social, with all current grad students, and a picnic with faculty, grads and their families - both events were attended by the potential student and his/her SO. Look at the events planned (if any) and see if any are more casual where you could bring your SO if desired. -
Perhaps I should have done that as well. Overall, my GREs are decent (thank you quant!), so I didn't think it would be as big of an issue...at least not enough to contact me about. However, if you don't meet that 'minimum' requirement when they're initially going through the apps...you could be out.
-
I definitely agree that the GRE does not measure your grad school potential, but I think some schools use it as an inital stage in the 'weeding out' process. I was contacted by one of my schools to justify my low verbal GRE scores. Thankfully I was accepted, but I can't help but wonder if my scores are cause for concern at other universities I haven't heard from yet.

For the last three years, my stipend has been 12K. However, as I get offers for PhD funding, I think the new averages are between 15-20K (similar to poster above), perhaps depending somewhat on area.

how should I interpret this?
readyforachange replied to UnlikelyGrad's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I'd definitely ask. When I received an e-mail of acceptance, there was wording very similar to yours about visiting. A few days later, I received another one with more details, including funding for a visit ($500 for flight!!). -
what do you do when asked to list grad school preferences?
readyforachange replied to 40404's topic in Applications
I ranked the school that asked first, then randomly put two of the other schools to which I applied. The application said that this question had no bearing on the admissions decision...but then why ask? Additionally, when I had an informal phone 'interview' with one of my schools, they asked which programs I applied to. When I told them, the grad coordinator said "oh, so all really good schools." I wasn't sure how to take that... -
post here if one of your programs has started contacting...
readyforachange replied to frankdux's topic in Waiting it Out
Someone posted on results that he/she was accepted to UT Austin for Sociology on Dec. 19...18 days after the applications were due. I haven't seen any other postings for Austin, so I'm wondering if this was just a rogue post... -
Anyone else regretting not applying to more schools?
readyforachange replied to waitingNC's topic in Waiting it Out
I am getting worried about not having applied to more schools within my reach. I applied to top, good programs and with all of the waiting and a phone interview/clarification - I'm worried I may have shot too high. Four of the applications were due in December, and I'm still waiting for any type of communication... :?: -
definitely - and that's why I didn't at first. All of the sites say that they look at applications holistically but obviously this one stood out enough... I guess more things the school might perceive as a weakness - perhaps talk to current professors about their opinions on your apps. For example, I def discussed why it took longer than usual for my master's (developed my interests, etc.)

it was from the grad coordinator of a program I applied to

Just another comment - I just had an e-mail today asking why I didn't justify my low verbal gre scores on my personal statement so make sure you're looking at your relative weeknesses and addressing them where appropriate as well I didn't initially include this information bc it's a fine line between justification & making excuses...but we'll see

Yeah I thought Tuesday was a big day for letters/e-mails (per one of the polls anyway lol)...nothing yet, but I'm still hitting refresh on my e-mail even though it's well past business hours I'm pumped about Lost! Although too bad it can't be two hours again like last week. It's going to be over before I've figured out what the hell is going on!
-
Pages per week in each course varies depending on what you were taking - I had some quantitative courses with little or no reading (perhaps 30-100 pages a week) to seminars averaging 150-200 pages, to others with 300+. My feminist pedagogy class now has a book a week, of 275-450 pages. Don't be surprised that not everyone completes every single reading in its entirety - sometimes it's just too much with everything else going on!

Yeah, the financial aid thing is something you need to look up and keep up yourself. There is a rolling application process for federal aid (so if you didn't get your FAFSA done yesterday it's not the end of the world), but most schools have a deadline you should apply by to receive *maximum* consideration for aid. If you don't get your forms in by this date, you may not be considered for all aid available to grads at your institution. Check the dates for all schools to which you applied! Some are as early as Feb. 1, others as late as May 30. In my experience, get it done earlier = the better.

any "what are you going to do now" fantasies?
readyforachange replied to katanianQ's topic in Waiting it Out
Here's the link for information about Disney being free on your birthday: http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/disney ... rthdayPage You can fill out the forms ahead of time for 'faster' processing once in the park, or else just fill them in when you get there. My birthday is mid-March and I'm going to Disney...just hope there's something to celebrate!! -
When I was admitted into my program for my master's, upon receiving my acceptance e-mail, the grad coordinator said information would be along shortly about a recruitment weekend. I think I got more concrete information about that weekend (when, where we would be staying, schedule) within the next week.

does a FAFSA need to be submitted to be offered TA/RA/Fwshp?
readyforachange replied to frankdux's topic in The Bank
I think part of it might come into play? I just looked into my FAFSA from last year, and beside my income, I had $104 contribute from Worksheet C (http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/FOTWWebApp/fotw ... stype=SWSC) which takes into account grants, scholarships, education credits, etc. I included in the link in case ya'll wanted to check it out.
